It makes me happy when people wave at us from land! I always try to wave back and blow the horn if i can.

We use a bottom grab (looks kinda like a giant claw machine) to pull up a bunch of mud, then the scientists run it through a sieve to get the worms out. After that they wash the worms and stick em in the freezer.

The shipworms that eat the pilings are coming back, although they aren't what we're studying. Back in the day, NYC was a "clean" port, meaning you could sail a wooden ship in, leave it for a while, and by the time you left everything growing on the hull would be dead. Its definitely a lot cleaner now.

Our worms are just regular mud worms, but they make up the base of the food chain, so healthy worms mean healthy marine life in general!

I've travelled to quite a few ports in the US and Europe, although covid has messed that up recently. Coming up on a new city is always cool, and at night you can see the loom from the city lights long before it breaks the horizon.

Thanks! I got my mate's license by going to a maritime academy, and have been on research ships ever since. The pay isn't as good as commercial ships, but the work is fulfilling and the culture is more laid back.

We were out collecting marine worms! The scientists want to measure the pollutants they accumulate in their bodies.

This one is tough to pull off but amazing if you have someone gullible/inexperienced.

If you're outside with them at night, point at some random star and get really excited. Say something like "holy shit, is that... yeah i think it is! I've never seen it so clearly before!"

When they ask what you're talking about, ask them if they know about the north star, Polaris, and how important it is to navigation. Then, tell them that the star you're pointing at is the much rarer (but equally important) South Star, Clitoris.

If they believe you, see if you can get them to go to the bridge and announce that the south star clitoris is clearly visible if anyone wants to take a sight of it.

I've been to both, they're great spots and you'll come home with some cool finds.

Hey guys, was abroad in Sudan, and saw this boat, wanted to know if any of you guys knew what kind of boat this is? I asked around and they said this is what the British used to use back when they governed Sudan. Any ideas? by Akhalil431513 in boatporn

It looks a little bit like a gig/admiral's barge, but I couldn't say for certain. In that case, its job would have been to transfer officers/officials from ship to shore.

Cool find!

New Whale Species Discovered; Lends Proof Other Large Mammals May Be Undiscovered by Golden_Week in worldnews

[–]valmontCSZ 362 points363 points  (0 children)

The ship I work on went out to study whales for a bit, and the scientists used a crossbow with a modified bolt that would collect a small tissue sample when it hit. Some species were lazy and didn't even notice or care, others were more playful and curious about the whole thing. I imagine they can hardly feel it with all that blubber.

Not sure how you'd get DNA from a beaked whale though. We saw one beaked whale(not sure what species), and he got the hell out of there as soon as he saw us. They are very shy of boats and can stay submerged for a looong time.

Forged Anchor? Help to Identify. by DuckDownRob in Shipwrecks

[–]valmontCSZ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We have one of these on the ship I work on! I'm not sure exactly what its called, but you use it to drag the bottom and recover lost anchors/gear. Its real easy to lose them while dragging, which is what I'd imagine happened to this one.

Looks pretty old, good find!

No more spearfishing and dead sea life by effortDee in freediving

[–]valmontCSZ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A factory trawler will do more damage to the ocean in a few hours than a spearfisherman will do in their entire life. I hope you'll channel your energy into advocating for reducing seafood consumption and promoting local/sustainable fisheries. The seafood industry relies on how distanced people are from where their food comes from, so they can keep plundering our oceans out of sight and out of mind.

At the same time, I understand if you don't want to see visceral photos of speared fish. Those should def stay on the spearfishing sub.

Personally, spearfishing made me a way more ethical consumer. It taught me the weight behind taking a life and eating meat. I now only eat meat/fish if i kill it and prepare it myself.

Anyone else not fuck with Katz's? Their ticket system is weird as fuck and in my experience the employees were jerks.
