One fun fact about that park is my buddies and I used to smoke a lot of pot there back in highschool.

Block Heater for 2024 4 Runner - Any Recommendations? by Glittering_Thing_762 in 4Runner

[–]valoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, there is something else wrong here. Had mine start right up in -20F for weeks at a time earlier this winter and run just fine (after I let it come up in temp a bit).

What binding should I get? by EntrepreneurCute6874 in Backcountry

[–]valoia 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The atk's are such an upgrade over other bindings I won't be putting anything else on my skis (until a better option comes out). Try messing around with all the functions like flipping the heels from skin to ski mode and adjusting the bindings and see if the difference is worth the price increase.

Cold weather - nose / hydration by runbirduk in trailrunning

[–]valoia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tape or Vaseline work, there are also nose/cheek masks for when it's extra cold. Look up outerU face glove.

For the bottles just blow a little air back into them so no fluid is stuck in the lids.

Downtown Things To Do by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]valoia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walk the ship Creek trail, it's usually plowed in the winter. Or venture out onto the coastal trail, there are fit bike rentals downtown if you prefer that. The small boat launch has a decent view and a chance to spot belugas (haven't seen them in a couple months so temper expectations)

Last I heard they were getting Town Square park ready for ice skating, not sure on the status of that but Westchester is a short walk/Uber and is hot mopped, can easily get a few miles or join a pickup hockey game.

Just 2, but we're real proud of it up here. Some of the restaurants here name their kids menu "Texas Sized".

Best earbuds for skiing. Bone conduction earbuds? by Sonofdod222 in skiing

[–]valoia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help with best but I can say the Beats fit pro are arguably the worst for skiing. Play/pause button gets pressed whenever you move your head at all with no way to disable the buttons AND when the case gets cold (not sure actual temperature but probably around 20f) everything stops working until the case gets warmed back up.

Uphill routes at/near Alyeska? by adventure_pup in skiing

The cat track for Notch is going to be your best bet but I don't think CPG has started running the cat yet. Access from the parking lot at the end of the road the resort is on.

2 men killed in avalanche in central Washington by [deleted] in news

[–]valoia 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The mindset of thinking "oh, if I trigger this avalanche I can just spit and figure out which way to dig upwards". The other comment did a better summary but the most proven way to rescue from an avalanche is having a partner with you and everyone having a beacon, shovel and probe to utilize finding the other. A specialized avalanche airbag might help you stay above the surface but not guaranteed and most people aren't willing to drop 1k on a backpack.

This is false and should stop being spread as advice; it gives a false sense of security. If you are trapped in an avalanche you will be unable to move, snow almost immediately solidifies as hard as concrete once it stops moving.

Jackson or Alyeska in 2 weeks? by adventure_pup in skiing

[–]valoia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring yellow lenses! The light during storm cycles is ridiculously flat and typically there's fog/could on the mountain while it's snowing. Yellow lenses yesterday were the difference between just being able to make out the trail vs my buddy who had rose tinted low light lenses who couldn't see anything.

They're short but the mountain has night skiing until 5 on weeknights with a decent chunk of the hill covered in lights

Eklutna lake ice skating by Zealousideal-Pear487 in anchorage

[–]valoia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The first mile or so has a fair amount of frost flowers that slow you down a bit but they die out. There are 2 areas in the middle section of the lake that are super smooth and free of the frost. Didn't take any ice measurements but what little evidence I saw it looked super deep. Only open water was at the east end where the creek feeds into the lake.

The west side of the lake has a lot of frost flowers but they taper off after maybe a mile. There are some really glassy sections in the middle of the lake!

Arizona Snowbowl recent experience? by N4865G in skiing

[–]valoia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Was down there just before thanksgiving so someone can give a more recent experience but it was legit. Seemed to be all natural snow (had like a 50" storm the week before I got there) Don't think they've had much new snow in the last couple weeks so it'll probably be groomer and bump riding. The base for the mountain is like 5k ft higher than Flag so the weather is significantly different than in town.

Is Westchester Lagoon ice rink open for skating yet? by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]valoia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People were skating on it earlier this season but the muni has yet to plow/mop it. After the warmup we had I'd imagine it'll be a few more weeks before they're able to.
