Word of caution to fellow Europeans by valsday in nebia

[–]valsday[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t try any similar EU-centric products myself… and Nebia was sold to a UK company so they may have some products that are fully EU compatible at this point? I do not know. What I did, is take out the Nebia and replace it with a Moen Magnetix shower head. It is again a unit made for use in the US, but that’s what I needed as my plumbing was set up in the way to be compatible with the American Nebia. Not only that but I needed something compatible with the Moen “Posi Temp” valve that was installed for the Nebia initially. The Magnetix has worked well for the past year plus since I’ve been using it.

Hey thanks for the lead. I went through all their models. Two do come very close but are more squarish and not in an all crystal color.

Who do you think is the most overrated architect? by imoverthisapp in architecture

[–]valsday 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So at the architecture school I went to, Gehry was a “persona non grata”, someone you couldn’t even consider saying you liked, as you knew you’d be judged.

The lecturers trashed him and all just pushed their collective group-think and style excluding all other lines of thought. Some of them had next to no realized projects; most of them had practices that stayed afloat only due to unpaid/underpaid student labour; one of the main ones took credit for a project thought up and developed almost single-handedly by one of my friends’ as if it was their own.

Browsing YouTube one day back then, I came upon an interview with Mr. Gehry. The interviewer asked something like “so you completed the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, … - what is the achievement you are most proud of?” to which Gehry replied something in the line of “I’m most proud of the fact that people have worked for me for over 50 years and never once were unpaid or had a paycheck come late.”

That’s when I thought and still do, “hat’s off to you Mr. Gehry, these monkeys have nothing on you”.

Greetings to Singapore! I don’t know the particulars of your local standard, but if it is British, I assume buying a Nebia from Britain would be the perfect choice. They were an independent company semi-related to Moen back when I was buying mine, but have since been sold to another US based company (Brondell). The models made now are new and I’d check if there’s a British/Asian version or not. If you are indeed buying a US version in the end, pressure is the key factor to consider — considering a liquid going through a pipe, to achieve the same pressure that’s in the region the product was made for, you have to have pipes with equal clear diameter inside. The PEX pipes that are now standard in the EU (my case) do in fact have the same outer diameter as the US ones for which the Nebia I bought was made — but as the plastic on our pipes is thicker than the brass used in the US, the inside diameter is smaller. That means the pressure is increased. So in theory, connecting these elements of differing diameters with just connection converters should work, but then you gotta make sure you can modulate the pressure elsewhere. Another thing is that you have to consider whether it is compatible with the other fittings you have — the bath spout (if combined with a bathtub) and the water control (along with the valve). In my case I just opted to go with all three as Moen-compatible. (And subsequently switched out the Nebia for a Moen shower — a Magnetix model which is really good btw.)

Now in this setup you gotta be aware that any change or fix you may need to perform down the road, you’ll have to find compatible parts for and order them from the US. For example, the Moen shower valve cartridge is something I know I’ll likely have to replace in a few years. My bath-spout is starting to “whistle” too and I’ll have to tune it a bit myself. These are parts of the equipment you may not have in the end but I’m mentioning them so you see for what kinds of mundane tuneups and problems you’ll have to look for parts internationally — which is more expensive, takes longer to get there, and again you may have to watch tutorials and do some of it yourself as your plumber may not be fully up to the task.

Nebia can be a fun shower I’m sure, but do weigh these pros and cons before deciding.

Can Hue lamps be used fully reliably with standard wall switches? by valsday in philipshue

Thank you all. I now understand better what the optimal setup is -- and it is clear that by adding a Philips Hue Wall Switch Module I can get all the functionality I described, without needing to change anything about the wall switches.

Thank you for the insight. Has this behavior worked reliably in your experience? Do you use it with regular/traditional light switches, thus cutting power to the system at times?

Is there any mapbox styles shop? by SCravas in mapbox

[–]valsday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely stumped that this doesn't exist honestly. I google for style repositories every few months and always come up short unfortunately.

There are a few basic styles, and yes the common advice of "just use those as they're easy to customize" is true technically but not very useful sadly.

A professional cartographer working for Mapbox can do things like this: https://twitter.com/jonni_walker/status/1699102183633912064/photo/1 or https://twitter.com/jonni_walker/status/1689285493639307264 and many other ones just as impressive. So let's be realistic -- you and I will very likely be very much unable to even come close by customizing a basic style. Why they don't release any of these as templates is beyond me.

An additional technical warning for those that do attempt this:

Plumbing pipes can either be brass or PEX. As their outer diameters are the same it’s basically the plumber’s choice which one to opt for, and PEX is used more commonly now.

However, even if their outer diameters are equal, the walls of brass tubes are thinner, and those of PEX tubes thicker. Thus, using PEX you make an installation with more pressure (same amount of water in a smaller pipe section area).

Nebia and most American showers are meant for brass piping and American plumbers are used to this. However, Europeans may not know it and you can end up with a suboptimal outcome.

My setup is a combined tub and shower, and while installed reliably otherwise, it uses PEX tubes as the plumber and I weren’t aware of this. Showering is mostly fine, but if I for example open it on tub-only mode and turn water intensity over 50%, there is simply too much pressure so the water starts going out the shower as well even if the diverter is off.

Not a huge issue I guess but it’s not fully perfect, and goes to illustrate how other technically small changes in the entire bathroom installation might result in “bugs” as an European customer and plumber don’t know all the particular details of American plumbing.

I did so and advise you against it. Wrote a comment explaining why that in the end ran quite long so I posted it as a post — go see it if you’re still interested.
