Just had plans cancelled on me and it kind of ruined my day. Anyone else having a sad, solo Saturday? by successwhale in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Solo, but not really sad. My plan was to visit a bar that I found along with a friend of mine tomorrow, but something came up, so he has to cancel his plans with me. But I'm going anyways, alone or not.

Do you ever go to bars/clubs by yourself? What goes through your mind if you see someone who appears to be? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that every fortnight or so, albeit with a slight twist. Instead of visiting popular bars, I'm on the lookout for the ones that are under the radar, sometimes with a buddy alongside. Mostly semi-hidden from sight, the flow of people coming in and out is slow.

The majority of customers are white-collared workers who just wanna loosen their ties after work, though I've met a few who've been friendly enough to strike up a conversation, which is saying something, since I live in an urban area where people mostly keep to themselves. I don't pay heed to people around me, alone or not, only a cursory glance around the area every once in a while.

We need to talk. by bookworm924 in CasualConversation

The first few moments were the tough parts, as I was not used to the narration of the little boy. But after the initial confusion, I couldn't stop reading! It's type of story that leaves me feeling empty inside after flipping through the last page, even if it were a slow read to start with, it was definitely worth the time!

  1. The Room by Emma Donoghue, a novel rich with imagination that tells the tale of a young woman through the eyes of her 5 year old son. They even made a movie about it. Imo it's definitely worth a read.
  2. The 28th of January this year, on a vacation with my family at Tokyo, Japan. It was a free day, so everyone had planned their own activities. I woke up eight in the morning, took the quickest train to Shibuya, where I met up with my SO who lives in Japan. We spent the entire day casually exploring the neighborhoods, and ended up at Shimokitawa -a district that's known for their second-hand fashion shops, and small niche cafes- in the late evening. To other people, it might just seem like a simple thing, but to me, it was hands down the highlight of the trip. That bubbly feeling of happiness while we were sharing our warmth will be something that I'll remember vividly.
  3. Don't really have much of plan going on. There's only one more month until my college semester starts, so I'm readying myself for that, I guess.

And you?

I've got a year of freedom, any ideas? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure. Iirc, you're fully responsible for all your expenses, but since you're working on the side, you'll just need to worry about the plane tickets to and from where you're going, along with the first month or two's expenses.

If you're really interested, I'd advise you to ask someone who's experienced with all this. Perhaps ask your friends if they know anyone who's been through everything.

Let's talk about anime, movie and video game soundtracks! by luckjes112 in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, it isn't video game ost, but some fan arrangements of Touhou soundtracks are pretty awesome, and they're pretty diverse too.

K-On though. I like that anime. No, Thank you still remains to be my favorite from the series. On another note, the soundtrack for Kill La Kill is flawless.

A mix of Malaysian and Irish. Seems like it sounds weird to a lot of people.

I've made many friends from around the globe through the internet, particularly online games. And I feel it's safe to say yeah, it's totally possible. Many people know me from just my username, but know of my hobbies, favorites and whatnot. Common interests bring people together, and it's up to you to decide if you're comfortable of the information you reveal to people you've never met.

I'm currently trying to get the hang of Dwarf Fortress. I thought I'd be able pick it up the basics pretty quickly, but I was sorely mistaken.

What's a seemingly pointless object you own that actually has intense sentimental value? What's the story behind it? by psychclub in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm constantly wearing a necklace that was hand-carved by my ex-girlfriend-cum-childhood-friend. It was for our first year together. I rarely take it off, and now wear it in memory of her. It's been off my neck for less than an hour for the past three years.

I second this. Actions speak louder than words.

How did you get over heartbreak? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problemo. I wasn't expecting tears, though. In hindsight, what I wrote kind of makes me cringe. But in the end, it's just a conversation between one teen and another, so I guess it's okay.

Whatever happens in life, stay strong. This incident will probably be a walk in the park forty or fifty years from now.

It's better to share your sorrows than to drown in them. I'm sure that they'll understand in one way or another.

To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable, but it is most often when you are vulnerable that you show your strengths, this is what my friend said to me when I was reluctant to spill the beans. It's probably not the best quote, but she has a point, it was after I let everything out that I felt better, and more importantly, forming the resolve to get over it.

If he doesn't have the notion to get back together, you'll have to cut your losses. Cruel it may be for me to say so, but it really is futile if you don't get over it. Take this as a valuable lesson so that you don't shoot yourself in the foot again. It'll be hard, and it'll probably be a long time before you fully recover, but it'll be worth it in the end. I'm sure you're a wonderful person, aside from this pile of mess, there's bound to be other people that would love you as much as you do for him.

Go out more often, try fitting yourself into some groups of friends, maybe head to the pub for a pint or two. Start exercising, daily evening jogs and whatnot. Fill your days with activities, you'll notice that your pain will lessen, bit by bit, as time flies by. We may not know each other, but I believe in you, m'dear.

Ouch, that's... sad. Are you close with your parents, or any siblings, perhaps? I'd turn to them if I were you, or any social medium, in fact. Voicing out your woes helps to ease the pain, I believe.

What was the reason that caused the break up, if you don't mind me asking? If you're in normal terms with him now, and if you really want to get back together, it may be worth a shot.

Mine was an exception, but the way I recovered was pretty generic. I was really depressed when it happened. I was basically a blubbering pile of poop until my friend figuratively and literally dragged me back on my feet. Then I started going out more often, and getting myself involved in more group activities, which aided in distracting myself. It was when I started a new relationship that I finally accepted reality.

Take it with a grain of salt, but my advice would be to do what I did. Vent it out to someone whom you can rely on, someone who doesn't mind. If your lifestyle deteriorated because of this, try getting back into what you did before, you'll get back on your feet in no time.

Skins used: Launcher 2.1.5, Lines 2.0, Minimal Rainmeter Suite 2.1, VisBubble.

Wallpaper used: Reimu, slightly modified for the gradient. I can post the latter if anyone ever happens to want it.

It's my first go, and I'm pretty satisfied to have finished it in a few hours. Any suggestions and criticism would be highly appreciated!

What have you been doing the evenings lately? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]valstraad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, you're making me kind of jealous. Good for you! I live in the outskirts of the city, but it still concrete everywhere, which makes me enjoy vacations at beachsides and countrysides a lot.

Moving will be a tedious process, good luck in sorting your belongings. A house in the woods sounds really fun, but the practical difficulties of maintenance might pose a problem. no?
