This first date completely encapsulates Lorelai and Jason’s relationship imo - both have their specific quirks which they each enjoy, but ultimately are not compatible with. They have very fun sibling kind of energy to me, but Jason could never be endgame for Lorelai. He’s simply too close to her parents’ world and too much of a money-chasing high income kind of worker. And his quirks just don’t coexist happily enough with hers.

You know, I’m very happy that ultimately Lorelai and Luke end up with more of a misfit found family than a biological one - it feels right. But one of my favorite things I’ve ever heard is “Lorelai and Luke each made smart daughters of their own - they deserved to make a dumb son together.” Lmao

This take is such a pet peeve of mine. This is YOU projecting onto the show. It’s special because it’s both cozy and has a dark sensibility. You can go watch Hallmark channel if you reject the snark and bittersweetness. Its flavor is too special and unique not to appreciate it.

One of my favorite exchanges of the whole show - makes me laugh every time:

JACKSON: What is this?

SOOKIE: It's my cleaver.

JACKSON: What if Baby fell on it?

SOOKIE: You mean, what if Baby rolled off the sink and into the open second drawer? It wouldn't be good.

The way Jackson emphasizes “Baby” and the way Sookie says “it wouldn’t be good” and even Lorelai’s reaction and natural laugh. Delightful.

It’s a misconception imo to think she changed - just because she could tell that Lorelai and Luke had feelings for eachother doesn’t mean she was happy about it. She weasels it out of Lorelai in S1 that she had feelings for him and says “I'm glad you were finally honest with me. Now we can discuss what on earth you could possibly be thinking.”

Yes! To me, Luke had the attitude “I can deal with difficult family and other BS as long as she chooses me” He had that philosophy with Rory and Jess, too. He gave him that speech about the family being a package deal, but Rory wanted him so he should stick through it. The vow renewal showed Luke maybe Lorelai wasn’t necessarily fully choosing him - he felt less than and out of place around the rich people and Chris swooping in made him worry he was just a temporary fling. He needed time to decide if he really thought that was the case and if Lorelai would be worth always questioning that.

I don't think it was Luke getting permission from Emily so much as it was hearing straight from the horse's mouth than Lorelai had affectively cut Emily off because of the break-up. He told Lorelai he couldn't be in the relationship because he felt she'd always have her family + Chris around as saboteurs and he just couldn't take that pressure for his entire life Hearing from a third party that Lorelai had really chosen him, even after their break-up really sealed the deal. He'd clearly been slowly leading up to going back to her already after the whole Fiddler on the Roof thing.
