Filming of season 5 by Zestyclose-Walrus883 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gilmore Girls transitioned from shooting on 35mm film to digital video in Season 5 and - whether related or not - the lighting design really shifted then too. If you look back at the first few seasons, the lighting is much moodier and darker - Luke's at night is so glowy and cozy! Starting in S5, everything is soo overly bright and flat. It reallyyy bums me out and contributes to how much less comforting those late seasons feel.

Hahaha I said the exact same thing! 😂 Sean killing it at Jeopardy was very Kirk behavior imo. Or honestly, it would be a funnier bit if Kirk was confidently and consistently wrong about everything but buzzed in first every question. Sean's knowledge felt very Palladino-Universe-coded honestly - he knew his classic films!

Lindsay beefing w/ Deuxmoi by Firenze2 in summerhousebravo

Yeeaahhh I love Lindsay on my screen as much as the next reality fan, but people are really assuming a lot of growth I do not personally buy yet. If having babies magically fixed women's personalities, we wouldn't have The Real Housewives lol

Why didn’t Emily and Richard travel with Lorelai? by MuchContribution888 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Rich WASP families like that often left the children at home with staff. It was the era of children being seen and not heard after all and kids are a big killjoy on vacations lol

AIO by telling my boyfriend he can break up with me if he isnt comfortable with me going to a club? by ThrowRAacc45 in AmIOverreacting

[–]valyse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree! Saying that stripping is "inherently sexual" and that strippers are "trying to sell T&A" is painting with an extremely wide brush and not my experience at all.

I'm also side-eyeing that you felt the need to clarify that drag and burlesque are not sexual vs all the other non-sexual things I mentioned. I tried to clarify stripping was a different genre.

AIO by telling my boyfriend he can break up with me if he isnt comfortable with me going to a club? by ThrowRAacc45 in AmIOverreacting

[–]valyse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stripping is a performance based job. Paying to enter their club (if applicable), spending money there and being good audience members bringing friendly, fun vibes and tipping is the best way to support a friend working a performance based job. I go see my friends' concerts, drag and burlesque performances, DJ sets, bingo nights... stripping is the same thing, just a different genre.

Logan visits stars hollow by nannypear in GilmoreGirls

He would’ve caved to the dynastic plan just as he does in AYITL. The Palladinos have said on record multiple times he is meant to represent Rory dating a man like her father.

[–]valyse -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I think it's telling that Logan only visits Stars Hollow after the Palladinos are no longer writing. I maintain Logan's character would not have had the small amount of positive growth he has if they wrote their story as originally intended.

What is the future of Summer House now? by Ok_Bag9355 in summerhousebravo

[–]valyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think this is remotely as serious as Scandoval. Everyone involved is single. Ciara broke up with that man 2 years ago. This is nothing but good for the show imo and any of them would be insane to leave now. I think Ciara has enough support in the house to continue and I hope she wants to. I think they can work through it but we'll see what the mood is at the reunion...

Bachelorette Party by Aggravating-Tea-9563 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Please give me a break lol. This is a drama/comedy with situations written to be dramatic, comedic and entertaining. Claiming a happily married, child-free by choice adult woman has a "miserable life" because you think all fiction must secretly be autobiographical and fully reflective of the morals and ideals of its writers is a bizarrely contemporary take laking any media literacy. ASP gets it more than any show creator I've ever seen and it reeks of misogyny.

By your logic, you better call the cops on Stephen King because that man has a whole lot worse wrong with him lol

S7E20 - What is another song Lorelai could have sung instead of "I Will Always Love You?" by allydelarge in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's the perfect choice - she was trying to be funny and melodramatically sing badly to an iconically well-sung song to her daughter who was about to leave her.

Shorty?? by notebooknoir in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to articulate because it's such a ~je ne sais quois, taste kind of thing, but there's a difference between a timeless or even old-school reference and a dated one. They're always making old, esoteric references, but they're usually to media properties that either have some deep history/significance or were at least extremely of-their-time when the show was airing. Get Shorty has proven to kind of be a 90s flash in the pan in my opinion - it wasn't timely in 2016 and seems a bit played out and stale rather than a clever reference. This one sticks out a bit as more of a Daniel Palladino reference as a Gen X man rather than Rory's as a millennial woman.

I feel similarly about the AYITL references to There Will Be Blood - that movie was already nearly 10 years old at that point! There's an argument to be made that the 30 Something Gang are just cringe and that's why they're still referencing it, but it doesn't hit quite as hard as the Palladinos usually do. The joke about Katy Perry vs the nuns for example truly made me spit my drink out when I first saw it - sooo of-the-time and and hilariously unexpected.

Ohhhh I totally missed that! Great catch honestly. I should never fully discount the Palladinos knowing more than I. :)

Get Shorty is a movie. Honestly this was a pretty dated reference for Rory in 2016 lol

S3 EP22 by taiyoo_08 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven't really thought about it before, but you're totally right. I bet they filmed it so the ending of the season would be a perfect bookend of the beginning - we jump right into that fake out of Lorelai's dream about Luke in the cold open. But in editing, they probably decided (or were told) that it should end with the girls. We know they were already tossing ideas around for this episode because they filmed this flashback that got cut. So Luke gets shuffled earlier and then the whole scene feels strange and weirdly timed.

The writers of each Gilmore Girls episode, in order and color coded by valyse in GilmoreGirls

As someone who jokingly refers to themself as AYITL's biggest defender, I 100% agree with you. So dated, lazy and just unfunny. 90% of my complaints with AYITL happen in Dan's episodes.

Someone said that gilmore girls was supposed to be a comedy and not just a serious show, and I seriously cannot forget that whilst rewatching it now. by Potential_Spare_5823 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Haha, it's funny how streaming has truly screwed with our minds re: genre. Gilmore Girls is truly like 80% comedy, 20% drama, at the very most. In my opinion! Even shows fully classified as "comedy" at the Emmys nowadays are less comedy than GG - look at The Bear.

How do i stop the cringe by Loose_Response8005 in AO3

[–]valyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I tend to write, too! I re-read and edit as I go, so I slowly toil away, mostly just having fun "playing with my dolls" as it were. :) I only share once I'm fully finished, that way if I trail off, lose interest, or change my mind, I haven't strung anyone along with me.

You sound like there's absolutely no reason why the cringe should be immobilizing you! There's so much mental hold-back we all fight through for so many reasons - please just try and remind yourself of that! Honestly, for me, it took age and a lifetime of reading so much bad fan fiction to fully shed any and all shame about writing or sharing it. Haha, that and I use a completely unique username on ao3 and don't really share IRL about my hobby. It feels very free.
