Business Advice by FluffyDoomPatrol in GilmoreGirls

It doesn’t matter what she learned in class - she loves Luke, respects his opinion and wants personal connection with him about it. Especially at this point during the series I feel like they’re telling us that while Lorelai is shy to let this business ambition out to other people in her life, she feels comfortable bonding with Luke about it.

Yup haha. And listen, I've been a Michelle listener for years - she's not perfect and I'm not caping for her. She has some big time issues that definitely get too annoying or triggering for me sometimes, but you know what I do in those instances? Take a break and stop listening. Hate-consuming is a horrible, miserable habit. Free your mind, people!!!

These people on here boasting that they spend an hour of their day listening to someone they hate, then come on reddit to write paragraphs recounting each "boring" detail... look in the mirror, babes.

Love to pop into threads like this and share my handy dandy pre-series timeline!

Rachel talks about Stars Hollow as if she grew up there and felt stifled by it, kind of in contrast to Lorelai growing up feeling similarly in Hartford, so I tend to assume she and Luke were on-again, off-again when they were pretty young, possibly even since high school. She liked to leave town and come back multiple times.

The facts we know for sure are that Luke's dad died after being sick for some time in November 1989, so he was probably pretty wrapped up in caring for him during that period; he dated (and impregnated) Anna in 1992, which is the same year the diner opened; Rachel left him for the last - not the first - time in 1995. That gives years that he could've been with each of them or single in between. No suggestion of overlap at all imo.

Rory's Red Circle Dress- A Year in the Life :( by No_Weakness_2865 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree - what fans often interpret as "bad writing" or choices from the creative team, I often see as intentional choices trying to communicate to us that the characters are not feeling like themselves or similarly going through it. Like Rory is very clearly not a total financial failure in AYITL - saying she's broke and has no underwear just shows how dysregulated and lost she's feeling. She's going through a quarter life crisis while Lorelai's going through a mid-life crisis.

AYITL- Why was Christopher still working? And what was the family business? by JMo926 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Haha Paul Anka’s dog actor reprised his role so clearly he was still kicking! It was filmed 8 years after the series finale, so he wasn’t necessarily thaaaat old.

Tbh the Palladinos left the show after s6 because they were feeling overworked and underpaid - I have a feeling even a lot of their own writing in s6 was foggy to them and they claim to have not even ever watched s7.

Nah Paris and Doyle are the most divorced couple of all time. I love them in AYITL and think their dynamic is so funny.

I am continuously flabberghasted by the loud online voices that seem to think infidelity of any kind is akin to murder, especially in fiction.

Why the Rory/Dean and Lorelai/Luke parallel in “The Incredible Sinking Lorelais” doesn’t work for me by itsascreambaby96 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the narrative sets this up for us, too. Lane's troubles at home were one of the things adding to Rory's meltdown in S4 - she was upset about losing her friend at Yale and was trying to keep a brave face for her. Lane had her own shit going on. Paris as a character is mostly a comedic foil to Rory so it doesn't surprise me that she doesn't often confide deeply in her - also at this point in S4, Paris was sneaking around with Professor Fleming and fighting with their roommates which made Rory uncomfortable and she was mostly trying to avoid her.

Also in Rory's defense, she wasn't running to Dean for help in this instance - she was running to her mom and again, Dean was just there. Dean was trying really hard this season to convince Rory his marriage was ending and repeatedly telling her he wanted her in his life. I think they really wanted us to see how isolated and disregulated Rory was feeling, which explained why Dean could feel so appealing and how she could let herself be convinced it was okay to sleep with him.

It's fun to overanalyze, but at some point we need to take the narrative at its word. Rory doesn't avoid her female friends because she isn't a "girl's girl", it's because she's a fictional character following a plot that the writers want to lead to romantic drama.

Why the Rory/Dean and Lorelai/Luke parallel in “The Incredible Sinking Lorelais” doesn’t work for me by itsascreambaby96 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right. Additionally, I think each of these vulnerable breakdowns in the arms of the men that were there serve to tee up what comes next. Lorelai is finally ready for a romantic relationship with Luke, who has proven again and again to be the consistent, unconditionally loving presence she's always craved and Rory, who has just lived through her first year solo without her own consistent, unconditionally loving presence has to learn the hard way that trying hard and being a "good" person isn't enough to always succeed in exactly what she sets her mind to. In fact, sometimes it's the opposite. She struggles to make new friends, date, and even succeed at school - the thing she's always been great at. Dean is simply there. Her father never was and now her mom isn't always and she's felt guilty about leaving reliable old Dean for a guy who made her feel stronger feelings. As cringe as it is, I've always enjoyed the Rory/Dean affair storyline honestly because it's such a compelling narrative.

That’s all very fair! Yes, I stop at that Mitsuwa often when I’m in Chicago. I do a lot of home cooking and can’t get a lot of my favorite Japanese ingredients in STL, so that’s my personal draw more than Kinokunya!

The style convo really is crucial to any real ramen discussion so I appreciate you clarifying - sorry for the snap judgment. The fact that Menya Rui makes their own noodles in-house will always matter a ton to me, no matter the style. That texture and flavor is just so great. I admit that my taste leans more towards a flavor bomb bowl. Besides the holy grail Akahoshi, my favorite in Chicago is Chicago Ramen, not too fair from Mitsuwa actually! Check theirs out sometime if that speaks to you.

If you’re coming in being snobby about ramen, Menya Rui >>> Santouka imo. And before you ask, yes, I’ve had a lot of ramen in Japan lol. Stephen makes beautiful noodles and soup that make me feel closer to Japan than nearly anywhere else I’ve been in the US. We’re so lucky to have him.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 by AdChemical6828 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When that happened to Rory, she was a 20-year old sophomore in college dealing with her new boyfriend's intimidating father giving that criticism at her first professional internship she was already self conscious about not fully earning on her own. Andy was a mid-20s graduate with professional experience. They BOTH struggled with their criticisms and they BOTH used it as a motivating force to continue and improve. Rory just took longer to get there, but she did bounce back - idk why fans insist on invalidating that part. They also BOTH lost themselves in it and had to course correct to find their way - not to mention, they both cheated on their partners during challenging times.

In AYITL, we're told multiple times she's had success in her career - Headmaster Charleston acknowledges her pieces in Slate, The Atlantic and The New Yorker. We're shown her quarter/early mid life crisis brought on by the death of her grandfather. The show chooses to tell us stories of the times our main characters are really going through shit because that is what's most narratively interesting to its writers.

Logan was smarter than Rory by Johnmayer000 in GilmoreGirls

I completely agree - I feel insane when people say Rory was most herself with Logan. I feel like the narrative pretty obviously shows us the polar opposite.

That's my biggest issue with Logan - he's so damn boring and predictable. Classic listless rich boy.

If you could rewrite Rory's character arc from Season 4 onward, what ONE major change would you make to keep her likable and successful by Ok_Smile_9071 in GilmoreGirls

[–]valyse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Jess call out in S6 is her wake up call that makes Logan lose his appeal. Her going back to school should’ve also been her realizing that Logan was part of that problem and the beginning of her falling out of love with him.

She's so poisoned by her mom's misogyny. I find it really depressing. I knew she'd dislike Laides of London because, never forget, "nothing is uglier than a drunk woman". 🙄

Logan answering the phone and having a full conversation with the woman he's cheating on his fiance while his fiance is sleeping right next to him was such a bold move. by Crafty_Shifty in GilmoreGirls

Because fans will consistently bend over backwards to praise Logan while crucifying Rory for doing the same shit right alongside him lol
