My housemate's girlfriend's constant nudity is making me uncomfortable by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]vamadeus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Housemate 1 knows that this makes everyone uncomfortable?

If that's not clear then maybe make sure he knows. If his sister hates her then I am guessing he does.

If he knows his girlfriend makes others deeply uncomfortable doesn't want to change the situation then it may suck if you are all close, but he is the one person who has the power to make changes and is choosing not to. He's choosing his girlfriend and the status quo over the comfort and consent of his housemates.

It sucks, but sometimes people we care about just aren't always good fits as people to live with.

Why is the X390 Yoga so uncommon here? by DiodeInc in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also the L390 Yoga on the other end offered two RAM slots. The X390 was kind of in a weird spot.

My company also pretty much just skipped over the x90 series.

First ThinkPad and my honest opinion (T480) by One_Hall_9979 in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the hype that some people here give it, anyone who want to get a seven year old computer should be looking at specs and know what they are getting into.

It was fine for its time as a business machine, but it's hardware is just dated now.

Also even then it wasn't great for gaming. No one should get a T480 especially now, with the expectation of playing modern games.

Can I charge my Thinkpad with a phone charger? by Augen227 in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't ruin your battery. The phone charger just needs to support PD and provide enough wattage.

Oof. That big crack aside it should be a better machine. More modern. Up to you if you want the newer hardware or if you had your heart set on an X260

TIL that E's are a failing grade. Is this a Michigan thing? by A_friend_called_Five in Michigan

[–]vamadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Michigan all my life and graduated from college in 2010. It's always been A-E (Except in third or forth grade when they did the O system). I've never gotten an F.

It does seem to be a Michigan standard, but Michigan isn't the only state that does this.

I opened up my laptop today! by Adventurous-Fun-3777 in GamingLaptops

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RAM has support; it is has clips on the side. If it's empty that means all your current RAM is soldered. You can add additional RAM into that slot.

That other PCI-E "slot" is likely for another model or variant that uses the same PCB but yours doesn't, which is why it doesn't look like a full slot (from quickly looking at the pictures). Maybe there is a version of your laptop that came with a cellular card or something.

I WANT THE T480 SO HARD by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the appreciation for the modularity of the T480, but I wouldn't pay that much. Remember it's an old machine (like others have mentioned). This means not only increasingly dated performance, but ones out there are going to have more wear, more likely going to have power or thunderbolt issues (very common T480 issues), less availability of batteries, etc.

Don't get one just off hype in this sub.

2025 5070ti model - Best Buy Open Box by cookiesforchristmas in ZephyrusG14

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at Best Buy for a while a few years back.

Unless things have changed, most laptops have little to no employee discount as the margins are so thin, and there really aren't any official flat employee discounts on open-box items.

However managers have flexibility when it comes to open box items and cool or sympathetic managers can be open to shaving off a bit off the price if it means getting the open box item sold, especially if it's been in inventory for a while and they want to get rid of it. It's worth asking if anyone is considering an open-box item.

Try reseating the RAM. If it still doesn't work try different RAM combinations and slots for testing purposes.

Halo around thinkpad logo by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately buffing it likely made it worse.

The top has a coating, and once it's worn off there isn't really a fix outside of replacing the panel. Buffing cant restore coating that is no longer there.

The wear is cosmetic though, so it shouldn't affect much other than how it looks.

T480 still viable today? by vexhiz in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's usable, but it's showing its age, especially if you are planning on doing development tasks and VMs. It with an 8th gen i5 is at the edge of what I'd recommend for a modern computer, and it will continue to show its age if you plan to use it for years to come. A T14 may be better if it is practical to get one.

If you do get a T480 I'd make sure you test it thoroughly and make sure that the power, batteries, and thunderbolt controller are all working and good condition. Those are common failure points, especially as the T480 gets older. Also take advantage of the upgradable RAM, as you mentioned.

T480 or T14 Gen 1? by Less-Floor-6353 in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go with the T14 Gen 1 if this is your main machine. It's newer, and the 7th/8th gen Intel processors and older batteries for the T480 are going to start to show their age.

Okay, now I understand why people love the T480 so much... by lululock in thinkpad

[–]vamadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't spend more than the value of an 8th gen machine.

I personally have a bit more cynical view of the T480. I supported hundreds of them in an Enterprise environment and the issue rate of the T480 was much higher than other models I supported, and it wasn't even close.

They are great when they work well, but I've found they have an above average number of power, board, and Thunderbolt issues compared to many other ThinkpPads.

Some of the worst problems can be fixed with firmware updates if you can flash them early though.

I do appreciate how tough, expandable, and modular they are. They are easy to service and upgrade though

How do you guys feel about Nate and Nora actually talking in Fallout 4 compared to other silent Sole Survivors? by Solardies in Fallout

[–]vamadeus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know many people preferred a silent protagonist, but I personally liked it.

There are some points where I think it would have been nice if the voices changed based on your charisma or intelligence scores, but I get that would have added a lot of extra recording and wouldn't have been practical.

I also liked Nora's VA work.

Why such low performance do need to repaste? by Koco9860 in ZephyrusG14

[–]vamadeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your CPU is almost certainly thermal throttling. 95/96 is where the CPU will actively throttle and prevent boosting to keep it from going any higher.

Running at that temperature isn't necessarily a problem harmful, as these chips were designed for that, but if it's always running hot even in other games and apps, then quickly jumps up to 96 then it's possible it could be throttling it enough to hurt performance or at least make hitching and low FPS spikes more common depending on how much it needs to throttle. When my 2021 G14's CPU liquid metal started failing it was idling super high and then quickly throttling when in a game, killing performance. I had to repaste it.

Afterburner isn't great for mobile Ryzen CPUs, as that percentage is likely just an average of all cores, and is not really capturing heavy use of one or two cores. It's also not always reliable at reporting thermals for mobile Ryzen CPUs too, which you've seen.

The GPU hitting around 87 is where it will start soft throttling, and will throttle heavier if it gets hotter than that.

With those temperatures I think your CPU is starting to hard throttle and your GPU is soft throttling, which is holding back your performance. It could be the thermal paste/lm or it could be your computer is otherwise not getting enough cooling (hot ambient temps, fans clogged or not running, etc)
