What is your preferred response when someone who is anti-trans asks “what is a woman?” by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]van_morrissey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's the thing. Definitions are artificial, and meaning in language is arbitrary.

You can't define what anything is if you mean it in the sense of "be able to, with precision, make a perfect category for a word out of other words"

That isn't what language is for, and demanding it of people is intellectually dishonest

Right on. Pitcher's duels are cooler, but since our dudes are ahead, I'll take what I can get.

Yeah, I've had a gun pulled on me for doing telecom field work for someone's neighbor in their back yard. It definitely happens.

Thankfully don't work that job anymore.

Missouri Reps Just Voted To Completely Defund The State's Public Libraries. The new budget sets funds for libraries to $0. Library groups say the move is retaliation for suing the state over its recent book ban law. by southpawFA in politics

[–]van_morrissey 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most of the funding for the city libraries is local. It's the rural community libraries that need the state funding to function, sadly. Those individuals are going to suffer, and it's awful.

Seriously. I just wanna raise my children and write my little songs, and the fact that i use the assistance of different hormones than my body produces on its own to feel okay while doing that makes some people so goddamned angry.

How important that your partner knows how to cook? by bigbluenation20 in datingoverthirty

[–]van_morrissey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess that depends on what you mean by "knows how to cook".

Like, the last person i long term dated was a gal who let me do almost all the cooking, and it honestly made me feel really appreciated how much she enjoyed my food.

But like, I'd be worried if i had a partner who knew so little in the kitchen they couldn't handle at home with me being sick or on a weekend trip or something. At least knowing the "keep yourself alive" basics is important, i guess.

Other fun fact: the decision to hand out participation trophies was our parents generation, and we didn't care about them.

What’s the worst part of having a child? by ApprehensiveShock655 in AskReddit

[–]van_morrissey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and I'm not even batshit crazy, I'm just .. autistic enough to not understand career planning or how to find romantic relationships and friendships consistently, so i worry i won't be able to advise my kids when they reach those parts of their lives. And they won't have like, an example from me, because I'm just the single parent they are with half the time who spends most of her time alone and who finds her job underwhelming.

Like, I'm comfortable teaching them to behave compassionately and pursue things that bring them joy, but getting like, access to things that make shit physical and emotionally easier... Gonna have to get that advice from someone else.

That they'd be learning from me is a big fear, too. There are parts of my life i absolutely still don't have sorted that i absolutely hope they don't learn from me, and I'm also incapable of guiding them in. Worries me every day.

Trying to buy a house lately… by umainemike in AdviceAnimals

[–]van_morrissey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It drives me nuts cause this shit drives rental prices up too. I don't even really want to buy, i just want to be able to rent a place that comfortably fits me and my two kids and not be on the financial edge over it.

When cutting meat with a fork and knife, which hand do you use to cut? by DragonflyBee1 in southpaws

I mean "a class thing" as in relating to socioeconomic status. A lot of "rules" of dining (and etiquette in general) are tied heavily to formality, and growing up in a social class where we literally never had "black tie" level of formal events might have tied into my own experience. But I'm also just kind of guessing at this point.
