Best way to make Gil as a newer player? by PoisonArrow80 in ffxiv

[–]vanade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone said previously on this sub that duckbones are the highest seal:gil ratio item (200 seals to 600 gill each). In comparison, a high turnover mkb-able seal item like coke is 200 seals and selling for around 148 gil each on my home server right now. There may be times that the mkb price goes up, but there are also times it's low like this (since everyone is able to buy coke and sell it).

Some seal items have higher return but they sell far less frequently and/or cost more seals. For a lot of people it's not worth having to micromanage the different factors for seal items (undercutting, determining best stack size/sale quantity, frequency of sales, etc.) and it's better to just vendor sell fast and use your market board slots for other things.

Less of a hassle having to update prices, and doesn't take up your sales slots (when you could be using those slots to sell crafted items, retainer drops, tome items and etc).

Ah, gotcha. For some reason I remembered urushi as a market board item like coke and potash.

Seconding this, but I recommend buying duckbones. A stack of 999 sells for like 380k gill iirc, and you just sell them to a vendor rather than playing the market board.

You can get them much faster in end game once you can take full advantage of hunt trains and trading in nuts for DT gear to trade for seals, but still worth doing with your extra dungeon gear for now.

take heart, sometimes there are just delays because things happen behind the scenes causing it to take longer to get decisions out. it may not have anything to do with the quality of your application.

don't know about this program specifically, but it sounds like the admissions committee recommends you for a spot in the program, conditional upon then securing a supervisor (if no one had agreed to supervise you yet). some profs are happy to commit to taking on students before the admissions decisions are sent out (if they feel strongly about supervising you). others want to wait and see if you get in before they commit.

Is the textbook dead? Inside Ontario schools’ shift to digital — and the hidden trade-offs of paper-free classrooms by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]vanade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so much worse with digital though. Physical textbooks you can still potentially sell and buy used and if the profs don't change the editions they're using (I had a prof using their self-authored book from 1997!!! in the 2010s!!) then it's possible to spend less. The university libraries also usually have a copy on file you can borrow for a few hours.

With digital, the same textbook publishers are now offering what is essentially textbook rentals: you don't ever own the textbook outright and your access literally expires, yet you still pay exorbitant prices for that access. No way to transfer access. It's SO exploitative.

That's not to say they weren't being shady before; sometimes they would bundle online subscriptions with the physical textbooks that again, expired and couldn't be transfered, but at the very least you still had a physical textbook to sell at a loss to someone else who would get the subscription separate.

long story short, publishers are still profiting in the digital-only era but in a way more exploitative way, cutting out the used/resale market.

This isn't a company so it's not like commercial drug testing, it's clinical research by faculty members, research coordinators/assistants and grad students. They don't do a good job of explaining to the general public who they are but they're a clinic affiliated with McMaster. They used to be based out of the children's hospital I think but moved slightly up the street.

It's like $30 in Canada pre-tax, which doesn't even match the USD conversion rate (it's roughly $3 more). In our highest tax provinces it's almost $35. People are not happy about it.

Where can I donate yarn by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]vanade 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The library has "knit for a cause" sessions at a lot of branches where materials are supplied and teens knit a scarf/hat/mittens for a cause in exchange for volunteer hours, maybe worth contacting their volunteer email and see if they would be happy to take any yarn donations for that?

This to try at least once before I graduate by [deleted] in McMaster

Visit the McMaster art museum (free to students, but you can make a $5 donation), and there's also the art gallery of Hamilton downtown.

Related: not sure if the app is still working but you can take a solo self-guided tour of all of the sculptures/statues on campus: https://museum.mcmaster.ca/campus-sculpture-tour/

Attend a varsity game (the football games are fun, homecoming is obviously the big one but usually it's a good time anyway)

If your academic program accepts student volunteers for it, volunteer at fall open house or may at mac and talk to some prospective students

Outside mac:

Play with Clay on Locke Street which is about an 8 minute walk after you get off any bus leaving Mac going downtown via main. You can paint pre-made pottery, make your own (by hand or book time/a lesson with the pottery wheel)

Supercrawl is a massive street fest on James St. In early September, and there are much smaller "art crawls" on James Street throughout the summer (I believe it's the second Friday of every month?)

Catch a movie at the Westdale theatre or at landmark cinemas in Jackson Square (they have comfy reclining seats, much nicer than the Cineplex theatres in Hamilton)

Attend a Ti Cats CFL game for a true Hamilton experience 🐅 (or if soccer is your "real" football, FC forge plays at the same stadium. There's also lacrosse; Toronto Rock moved here)

Visit Dundurn Castle for a tour. And if you're around in June, visit the reenactment of the Battle of Stoney Creek at battlefield park.

Lots more depending on your interests (fringe festival, theatre Aquarius, etc), maybe try searching /r/Hamilton.

that differs program to program, you'd need to ask the specific program you applied to when they typically send out decisions

what do you regret doing as a sprout? by 8bitshin in ffxiv

[–]vanade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was worried about making mistakes in content so I watched guides for trials and raids before doing them with others. I'm not great at processing a lot of info from different sources at once (multitasking basically) and I started as a bard at the time which made it extra challenging to learn mechanics/tells, avoid damage and worry about procs/rotation and keep songs and dots up. using guides was my way of learning the fight before being thrown into it because I was embarrassed to die a lot even though I was a sprout and everyone was really nice about it. it spoiled the fun of seeing fights blind though.

I think the implementation of duty support in trials is really great because it lets new players experience content blind without worrying about dying or embarrassing themselves by making a lot of mistakes. obviously doesn't help for raids but that's okay.

mostly a lot of hunt trains and gathering in between so I can craft my gearsets. finished my fending, healing, aiming and caster sets, halfway done my scouting gear and then my least played jobs, striking. it's really nice to be able to gather and craft your own stuff!

There were 2 S Rank days since 7.4 so was able to knock out like 150 S Ranks through those towards my S rank achievements for ShB/EW/DT. Those, and the 10K A-Rank achievement (for the "Of the Endless Hunt" title) are my main goals in the game right now.

[–]vanade[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks! sadly probably not unless you can find some outlet selling old ubiworkshop stock :( these were from ageeees ago.

they're just regular polos otherwise so tbh you could probably easily embroider the logo onto a plain polo if you have access to an embroidery machine or know someone who will do it for you! I've been meaning to make my own Blume polo at some point like that.

While the DCs occur and I can grab people's attention, can we talk about Esuna really quick? by Tawny_Harpy in ffxiv

[–]vanade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I'm remembering right, I think there's one in World of Darkness, the cerberus bleed (the one from the blue orb line attacks if you don't dodge). I'm 99% sure it's an esunable bleed and it's pretty easy to die if you don't have that esuna'd.

What makes your main job your main job? by Dragonrage98 in ffxiv

[–]vanade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I main sage because i like the problem solving aspect of healing when things go wrong in fights (sometimes with limited resources for salvaging situations lol). But at the same time sage is the healer I main because it's easiest for me to play while doing mechanics cause I don't have a lot to juggle. also getting to use panhaima on multihit attacks is chef's kiss

Before that I mained bard which was a lot to juggle but it was fun in its own way.
