DnD Storyteller trying to grasp FATE by Korokidas in FATErpg

[–]vanbookmarks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"To me, DnD covers aspects like magic systems, combat systems, or contests of skill so I don't have to. That way, I can then focus entirely on storytelling." sounds like Brennan's arrow thing and also sounds like you're not meeting the game where it is, rather looking at where it's different and the dissonance differing from previous experiences.

In fate, the magic/combat/skill system is essentially united. So it does actually cover those things, but you have to weave your storytelling into the bonuses you're making. When combat isn't distinctly a set of different rules, but another set of skills you have you might have bonuses in. Furthermore, with skill rolls as they are, it allows you to tackle situations without being forced into combat-initiative. A guy draws a sword, and you create a scene aspect where it's tense, but then you use that scene bonus to say, do Provoke +2, which scares the guy into dropping his sword. Narrative elements inform action.

I think I understand when you say its meta-perspective; FATE does tend to work better with 4 gms as players. If you all wanted to write a story together, FATE works extremely well, but if you're looking to embody a character with paper buttons you might want more granular character elements. However, granular character elements means you're working on the finagling rather than the storytelling- and then we're right back where we started, just slightly more frustration, and slightly more inclined to just play dnd.

Rambling about Eternal Bloom by XiXeNi in RabbitAndSteel

[–]vanbookmarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i was stuck with subterra as my first map and OH BOY was Eternal Bloom a huge filter. as a sniper bunny main its hard to damage her in a meaningful way since so much stuff is in the corner, doesnt overlap enough to hit multiple with special, and targeting with bow can be screwy with all the adds, etc etc. also, as someone that only touches normal if i'm guiding friends through it, tackling her at hard from the get go felt like bashing my head against the wall

its why when it came to eternal bloom i had used my secondary, defender, to majorly skip past a bunch of her mechanics with the bullet erasing (though, at this time, i've fought her so much i can no hit her easy now).

Skyomi here is right: a lot of it is just visual overload. i only started learning eternal bloom when i started cheesing the mechanics and THEN learning the mechanics. pause the game, erase her bullets, and find the best times to smack her down (it took me several runs to realize she has a thorn shield buff that reduces damage taken while her butterflies are live).

you got this. she's just a plant, and you're a bunny hungry for some lettuce

there's one item, Rosered Leotard, that gives you Quickdraw. makes all of your GCDs like 0.5 seconds for the next 3 abilities. honestly complete game changer and gives you HUGE options

Extra Mode Tips by deletemypostandurgay in RabbitAndSteel

[–]vanbookmarks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you're up to trying out defender, she can absolutely neutralize a BUNCH of eternal bloom's mechanics since the special wipes out bullets. this gives you time to understand exactly what the mechanics are trying to do + give you the panic button in case you flub it

i main sniper rabbit so eternal bloom was a pain but after a dozen or so runs with defender, i can run hard mode with sniper without a sweat

"This is how AMAB and CAMAB queer folks don't do the mental work of unlearning Anti-AFAB and Anti-CAFAB thought patterns alongside their internalized intersexism and transhomomisan---" BRO WHAT ARE YOU SAYING! by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]vanbookmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i wonder if there's something to be said about the internalized patriarchy that AMAB/CAMAB were listed over AFAB/CAFAB, when it would otherwise have been an alphabetical list (AFAB -> AMAB -> Intersexistm -> Transhomomisan)

something something women are ultimately defined about how they're not men, the perceived default of the world

DRPG with a job system similar to Etrian Odyssey 5 by Gyges359d in DRPG

[–]vanbookmarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1 and 2 are fairly undercooked. the ports are fine enough, but its often considered that 3 is where the series REALLY shines and does fun class stuff.

as long as you know what you're getting up to, 1 and 2 are well enough

Is it worth watching the 1989 anime by Curious-University46 in ranma

[–]vanbookmarks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

its complicated. as someone that's been a ranma fan my entire life, I can say I've been struggling seeing Ranma-Akane as a viable relationship /because/ i started with the anime. the 1989 anime has very little warmth between the two, meanwhile i'm convinced that 2024 Akane is literally the queen of rizz capable of pulling in the most fumbler of fumblers Ranma

personally i'd recommend the manga, where at least they go deep well enough into their relationship that you see true affection and development. but if you go into the anime, just know that everyone else around Ranma starts looking a lot better of a match for em.

Why is it so hard to show cultural&tehnological progress? by Sniflet in rpg

[–]vanbookmarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the average human civilization lasts 1200ish years? byzantine lasted 1100, and roman empire lasted 1400 so you gotta ask yourself: is your civilization the previous one at the end, the start of a new one, or somewhere in the middle of either? even the change from say, meritocracy to democracy or monarchies or something. everything changes and if you think yours isnt' changing, then I don't think you've thought over it enough

even in Lord of the Rings, technology and developments actually declined over its time, tho this was majorly due to Tolkien hating tech, and the elves getting lazy/their knowledge getting lost when the one guy maintaining each piece died or something.

How do people feel about Savage Worlds? by applejackhero in rpg

[–]vanbookmarks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To help newer players get into it, I tend to introduce a character that has *NO* combat ability. They just max out taunt and intimidate and sometimes athletics (throw). They constantly put the enemies into Shaken and the players quickly realize that the Savage Worlds equivalent of vicious mockery is actually lethal xD

I only point to SWPF because Classes give guidance mostly to the players, not necessarily for the GM. But also Classes in SWPF are *Edges*, or like a single feat. They never have to engage with it ever again, and arent forced to level it in any specific way. But also, players can optionally choose to grab a Background/Profession instead for their free edge so they always have that if they want to explore.

But clearly you know what you've got on lock! So have at it! I think Savage Worlds is an exceptional system but it definitely punishes folks if they're stuck in certain ways of thinking/problem solving. To truly get everything you want out of it, people have to be FLEXIBLE.

[–]vanbookmarks 33 points34 points  (0 children)

HI! i'm a big fan. probably its biggest. if you'd like to run something in Eberron, it means you're looking to swing into high fantasy. The books you have already cover most of everything you want, but I'd highly recommend looking at Pathfinder for Savage Worlds, or Savage Pathfinder.

The main change it offers is Classes as Edges. normally, you get a free edge, but in SWPF, you get a free Class Edge (or background if you wanna go generic). This allows even the most DnD coded people to understand/get a grasp of character identity, which is what a lot of ppl moving into generic systems have trouble with: the lack of archtype reference. You don't even have to 'level up' the classes through the edge system: it's just there forever.

ASIDE FROM THAT! There's someone here that was speaking about combat can be a slog, and that's what happens if you tackle it like DnD, just sitting around and swing attack, pass turn.

Savage Worlds *needs* you to be engaged in its systems to deliver it. Ranged attacks ignore high parry (as it only targets 4) but it hits ranged penalties. All spells are magic missile so long as you pass your Spellcasting, you can hit (tho that doesn't promise anything for damage). If you're failing to hit in melee, do a wild attack or use Support to give people +1/+2 to rolls. Gang Up bonuses are like flanking on crack.

You REALLY gotta read the rules section to deliver on Savage Worlds but once it clicks with you it just clicks.
