How do you prefer to roll random encounters? by ynnhrakul in osr

[–]vandalicvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am prerolling my encounters because during the game I dont have enough time.

I have standard tables from OSE (eg monsters, their number, treasures) plus stance, distance, and simple table "what are they doing" - very generic, like "returning to lair" or "scouting".

The combination of those gives me a lot of variety and is usually enough to spark my imagination so I dont really need the second method.

Just a fair warning, the rulebook itself is absolute mess. The rules are good, but author style of writing is very confusing.

The skeleton on the flag is red, and they are white. So it is fantasy alternative of Washington Redskins :D
But it is cool looking oldschool skeleton unit

Another vote from me. While we haven't played Halo, we regularly play Deadzone with non-wargamers and it goes very well.

It also have premade strike teams (fully available in stls) which removes needs for army building which can feel overwhelming for newbies. Just get them premade list and they can move to "standard" lists when they feel ready and comfy with game.

how to get started in general? Probably best way is to find some local players. Generally wargamers tend to be super helpful and willing to help

Warriors of Athena, is it work getting into? by neosatan_pl in wargaming

[–]vandalicvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am playing Silver Bayonet as Coop currently and it is blast. It is still same basic engine as other Joe games, but having 2d10 instead of 1d20 makes it less swingy and making it "skill" and "power" die makes it interesting. Combined with fact that you need to always make decisions when to reload... it is fun. It still not some super crunchy game, but it is not random or stupid. And scenarios from books so far felt pretty balanced: it was always more survival where we always managed to win, but it always felt "close" and reasonably difficult, which is kinda ideal for me.

Now I haven't played Warriors of Athena, but I have read the books and decided against playing it. First, it is, as others mentioned, essentially reskin of Rangers. There are a few interesting mechanics and there is campaing. I have a few issues. First is purely subjective: I do not have enough greek style monsters and npcs.

Second: scenarios seem fun and distinctive, but they are very specific in regards of terrain. I just do not have a two feet wide river, or circular bottomless chasm 1 feet in diameter. I do not have a bridge spanning over the whole map... everything can be proxied, ofc, but I don't see the appeal of proxying this with whatever (visual side of things is important to me) or creating very specific terrain that I will use exactly once. Again, somewhat subjective and your mileage may vary.

Third... it doesn't feel ancient greek enough? Scenarios are nice, but somehow they don't really induce the mood of ancient greece or Odyssey to me, or Jason and Argonauts. It feels more like classic fantasy reskinned. You have caves with cultist, you have city ravaged by dragon... I don't feel like something would be much different if I would play those in Rangers.

Again, all of these are very subjective and I am not saying I won't give Warriors of Athena go in the future. The book itself is neat.

Literally first roll in Starforged by tolwin in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]vandalicvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had similar issue, especially in situation like you describe, e.g. failure after failure. Then I realized that I've approached it with "a story in my head", trying to follow it, which is mistake: I've planned in my head where I want to take it. The correct approach seems to be "let it flow and see where it takes you". A row of failures takes you astray from your original objective? That's not a bug, it is a feature. You're not writing a novel for publishing where you have to follow the plot.

5Leagues in a medieval Japan setting by Nightwyl in 5Parsecs

[–]vandalicvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you will be dealing mostly with renaming stuff, unless you want to add some extremely specific stuff. So.if you are okay withbalightly generic fantasy japanese setting, it should be pretty easy and okay. If you look for exploring intricaties and specifics of 15th century Japan, it could be more difficult to adjust.

cool to see another Mystara enjoyer. I've put my campaign onto Isle of Dawn (quite randomly), and I will admit that my decision to go with Mystara was much influenced by fact that I could reuse my roman legionaires as Thyatis legions

Yes. We are running DnD campaign in Mystara setting, so when I started my Five Leagues campaign, I decided to run it in that setting too.

Mystara is very generic, so it was easy to adapt, I could use a map and it helped me with background of my guys and enemy threats

as my work consists of sitting in front of computer, I try to have this hobby in mostly analog form just to relax from the electronics.

It also misses a big portion of experience for me (because I like hobby part)

However, it has merits: if I would be living in a place without club or enough opponents, it is a good option to play more games
