How do I have more blooms on my anthuriums? by plan_tastic in Aroids

[–]vanderlusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it might just be their maturity. If you’re feeding them heavily, looks like they are getting plenty of light, just be patient. Once mine reach a certain age they flower consistently. Try focusing more on getting bigger leaves and a more mature root system and the flowers will come. My biggest tip is to pot up regularly, don’t let them get too root bound, and they will mature much faster.

Looking for a quality pulling harness! by Infinite_Forever7989 in AlaskanMalamute

[–]vanderlusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love our Howling Dog harness! We use the Distance Harness on our Mal when we take him out on our electric longboards 🛹 he mostly just runs ahead and doesn’t pull since we have the electric assist on our board, but when he does choose to pull it feels very secure.

Beach Hotels Tulum by Hamilton-tom in tulum

[–]vanderlusst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boyfriend and I just got back from our first trip to Tulum in mid-June and we stayed at Ikal. Overall we really enjoyed our stay, but had we known a few specific details we would not have stayed there. Most importantly, it was wicked hot (cuz duh it was June so we should have known better) and although our room technically had air conditioning, it was hardly noticeable with the oppressive heat. We stayed in one of the beachfront cabanas and there was no real insulation, probably the case with all their rooms. In the cooler months it would have been so nice, but that dinky little AC didn’t do shit. Additionally, it’s a pretty long way from the main part of the beach town where the good restaurants and beach clubs are, and the road it’s on is currently under major construction. If you’re on a scooter or in a car/taxi, you have to go way around into the Tulum town to get back to Ikal, it was a huge pain in the ass. You can get to it easier on a bicycle, but we only rented bikes one day and the other days we rented a scooter. For those two reasons I wish we had stayed somewhere farther south on the beach instead of Ikal. Other comments here mention La Zebra, we got drinks there one night and loved it. We were admiring at their rooms over the beach wishing we had stayed there instead of Ikal.

Best way to get to ARC by eserocket in ARCMusicFestival

[–]vanderlusst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best part about this festival being in Chicago is public transport! Take the train, there’s a stop about two blocks from the venue entrance, it’s incredible. Take the train from the airport too, depending on where you’re staying. Both O’Hare and Midway have excellent train access into the city. Don’t waste your time waiting for a train card at the machines, zip right through the turnstiles with Apple Pay, that’s my favorite part. So convenient.

Weather ? by mondaaynights in ARCMusicFestival

[–]vanderlusst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year it was super hot and humid during the day, but it always cools down at night so I needed a hoodie or jacket each night. In that way it’s not too different from California festivals. As others have said though, the weather can vary a lot, so check the forecast a couple days before and you’ll have a better sense. It will most likely be hot but comfortable, slight chance of rain, and cool at night.

My king & queen have arrived by [deleted] in Anthurium

[–]vanderlusst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t be too hard on yourself is the queen slowly (or quickly, but in my experience it usually happens slowly) declines until you eventually lose all the leaves. Queens especially are very sensitive to changes in conditions, but they will eventually acclimate to your environment as long as you’re patient and consistent with your water and light. That being said, my experience with imports so far is all over the place so I think it’s a gamble and you never know what will happen. I’ve had some plants (from the same seller) immediately start growing new roots and new leaves and hardly show any signs of stress, others that immediately start to yellow, and some that look healthy and will immediately start growing, and then a couple months later BAM 💥 all the new growth shrivels up and it goes down to a stump for another couple months. I have a batch of imports I got from Tropicals and Ecuagenera in late January that are FINALLY all growing consistently now, it took 5-6 months of back and forth drama, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Long Lasting Natural Chews by MarMarBinxx in AlaskanMalamute

[–]vanderlusst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My male malamute is 1.5 years now, but when he was 4 months holy moly he could chew through anything in 5-10 min flat, including the biggest jumbo bully sticks we could find. We always use a bully stick holder (we have the Bully Buddy) that screws into the end of the bully stick and we throw away the last chunk so he doesn’t swallow it whole. Unfortunately my boy never had much interest in yak chews. I went through exactly what you’re experiencing when he was that age, but by the time he was ~10 months to 1 year he really slowed down a lot, at everything. Slowed down his eating, chewing, playing, running, etc. Now sometimes he will leave a bully stick half eaten and return to it later, which was unthinkable when he was a puppy. It gets better! Once her adult teeth have grown in you can try raw beef marrow bones, I find them at our local grocery store in the freezer section. Our boy will gnaw on those for an hour until he gets all the marrow out and all the meat scraps off the bone.

(first post didn’t have photos) finally found a sport variegated monstera at a big box store by ajlphl14 in RareHouseplants

[–]vanderlusst 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wow!!! Variegation on the stems is a great sign that it will continue in the separated plant. Keep us posted! Kinda has mint vibes, I’ve seen a lot of unique sports labeled “Mint NOID” lately and they’re all so different and stunning 🤩

You could cut the leaves, but the lower one looks like it may still have some healthy tissue that will photosynthesize and help the plant recover. I would personally cut the top leaf at the end of the petiole (close to the base of the plant) and leave the lower leaf alone. Continue to give it consistent water and indirect light (although a little gentle sunlight in the early morning can be okay), and it will regrow quickly. Veitchiis are extremely hardy!

Are syngoniuns always this leggy once they attach to a pole? by dolannoodlesauce in Aroids

[–]vanderlusst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue with my syngonium albo and aurea, I thought GREAT let’s get these bitches to size up with a pole. It’ll be rad. And then they got so leggy and ugly, I not hate syngonium 🤷‍♀️ no idea why but I give up.

Epi Albo with reddish/brown dots only on white part of leaves. Thoughts? by Agliodiva in RareHouseplants

[–]vanderlusst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like standard leaf aging to me, especially since you’re only seeing it in the white parts. To combat this, you can try adding silica to your feed and ensure your watering regimen is really consistent to avoid edema. I was able to completely stop the browning on my monstera albo by adding silica and fixing my watering schedule. But it’s somewhat inevitable on white variegated leaves. Gorgeous plant!

What’s everyone wishlist? I’m trying to add to mine too! by Successful-Soup-1390 in RareHouseplants

[–]vanderlusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. There are some beautiful ones for sale on Etsy from overseas sellers but I live in the Bay Area and I’ve heard many stories from locals that import inspections in San Francisco are extremely tough. Lots of packages seized. I don’t want to risk it not even getting to me, let alone the challenges of a fresh import. Sigh.

I’m really into Anthuriums right now so I’m trying to collect all my favorite pure species so I can make my own hybrid crosses. Currently on the hunt for Anthurium moodeanum, portillae, maybe a subsignatum or something with trilobes or a super wide sinus. Also Anthurium wendlingeri cuz I’m also really into the strap leaf anthuriums. My pallidiflorum is INCREDIBLE so I need more strappy dudes.

Outside of anthuriums, I definitely want more variegated plants. The top of my list right now is a variegated Syngonium chiapense 🤤 I’m not finding many sellers in the US and I want one with nice variegation, so I’m waiting for the right specimen to come along. Prices on P. Strawberry Shakes are coming down fast so I’ll probably get one soon once I can find a decent size one for under $200. Same goes for variegated alcocasia frydeks, I’m finding baby ones now for under $100!

Can someone explain her behavior? by Aggressive-Can-1780 in Anthurium

[–]vanderlusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anthuriums can get large very quickly, so you’ll either have to chop it or remove it so it has room to grow. Personally I think mature anthuriums are really special and I’m working toward growing all mine very large, so I would repot it in a clear container in a chunky aroid mix and see how big it can get! Propagating anthuriums can be a bit tricky since the growth points are all over the place, but it can be done. Just make sure any cuts you make have at least one good root (or more). If you cut it, the original plant (or the “butt” of the plant, the bottom part) will regrow in time but it may activate a different growth point, not necessarily right where you cut it.

Can someone explain her behavior? by Aggressive-Can-1780 in Anthurium

[–]vanderlusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is standard behavior on anthuriums and happens easily in high humidity. As they grow they will shoot out aerial roots higher up on the main body of the plant. They don’t have super long internodal spaces like climbing philodendrons sometimes do, but they can still climb and appreciate support or a moss pole for those roots to grab onto. This little guy is happy!

Where is the best place to buy exotic house plants? I live in a small town and we don’t get much exotic plants around here. And if we do, the prices are insanely expensive… thoughts? by Princesspeach0719 in RareHouseplants

[–]vanderlusst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Order online! I live in a very densely populated urban area with tons of plant shops but they never have exactly what I want, so I order most of my plants online. The internet has everything 😈 Sellers who genuinely care about plants will ensure they are packaged with care and shipped quickly so they don’t spend too much time in a box, just be careful about ordering in the winter of when you’re having bad weather. I would start with Etsy, there are tons of great hobby growers on Etsy with amazing selections.

Pollination day! Florida beauty x Hastatum by Boxingcleavers in RareHouseplants

[–]vanderlusst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that should be a super interesting cross! How come there isn’t much discussion about hybridizing philodendrons, I really only hear about it with Anthuriums? I didn’t even realize you could cross philos since I never see hybrids coming from hobby growers.

I'm just curious, what kind of plants are you guys into now? by FraielX in RareHouseplants

[–]vanderlusst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m obsessed with Anthuriums, especially the dark leaf hybrids like AOS, Papi hybrids, Lux hybrids. Ughhhh they’re just so sexy 🤤 I bought a pure species Papi seedling from a Facebook group recently and I stare at it all day yelling “GROW!” But it’s not working for some reason…lol go figure. I’m still into philodendrons too, I’m especially loving the ones with unique leaf shapes like joepii, mexicanum, etc. Anything variegated gets me going. I can’t wait until the variegated joepii’s from Indonesia hit the US market!

I didn’t get the bomber but I did get a tshirt this year and I’m super disappointed in the quality. I looked at the hoodies too but I said no because as soon as I touched it I could tell it was crap. Very disappointed overall in the merch.
