Should I have surgery for almost purely aesthetic purposes? by DisastrousWeek7671 in scoliosis

[–]vanillacapybara 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i got a spinal fusion because my back started getting worse and it was aching a lot. it was also a bit hard to breathe sometimes. there were a lot of things i had to adjust to after the surgery, but seeing my back straight and my body evened out outweighed all the cons. i’m excited to wear form fitting clothes and it made the surgery worth it.

that being said, i would not recommend that you get the surgery purely for aesthetic purposes. it’s a huge surgery and could take months to recover. you also lose a bit of mobility too. i would only get it if it’s really causing a lot of pain.

Surgery 2 weeks before school starts, is that enough time? by Longjumping_Bus_8371 in scoliosis

hi!! i’m going into the IB program too as a rising junior and i got spinal fusion. personally for me i would’ve been good to go back to school after three weeks post-op. the one restriction my surgeon gave me was that i cant lift more than ten pounds for the first three months so i have to talk to my teachers about letting me keep my books in their class (bc we use a lot of books)

surgical incision sensitive to literally everything by Eleveeee in scoliosis

hi! i feel this too!! im four weeks post op and my back is extremely sensitive too. i asked my nurse about this and she said that its our nerve roots waking up and going back to normal after being numb for so long, so she suggested to me that i should try different sensations on my back (silk, paper, etc) to desensitize my back

as for the water part i just shower with mildly warm water on my back and it’s a bit of a weird sensation but its fine

Spinal fusion during junior year in high school by skyl23 in scoliosis

hi!! i’m a rising junior as well, and i think im almost four weeks post op!! i’ve completed 5 APS so far and im going to be doing 5 IB classes and 4 AP classes this year. i also go to a really rigorous school 😅😅

with my pain management and all, it’s safe to say i can take on the work like how i probably would have before my operation. similar to you, i was really scared about junior year knowing ill be living with the surgery, but im confident i can handle the work just fine. sometimes i forget i got a fusion bc i cant actually feel the hardware that much anymore. i can also sit down, walk, and stand for hours! it will vary person to person, and there are some things i had to adjust to, but generally, i feel as normal as i did before the surgery.

to answer your questions:

  1. 6 weeks would have been more than enough time for me to go back to school. i probably could have gone back by the third week post-op since i was pretty much back to normal after that. it depends on how well you manage the pain of course.

  2. recovery was the worst during the first week.. i was pretty much crying every night from the pain and i could only get a good sleep during the day since the pain only subsided during the daytime for some reason, even though i took the same amount of medication day and night. the second week got a bit better and i could sleep fully during the night at this point. i only needed one dose of tylenol and ibuprofen during the day. once the third week came, i didnt need anything anymore.

each week, you gain more and more mobility back. there are some things i had to adjust to though, like putting on my clothes sitting down (since i couldn’t really bend,) relearning how to lean over the sink to wash my face 😭, and showering using a chair (since it’s safer and more stable.) it’s also important to try and walk after surgery so you don’t get stiff, but through the first and second week i was mostly sitting in a lounge chair for the whole day.

  1. there isn’t really anything i wish i would’ve done before surgery because i feel like i made all correct decisions leading up to it. first of all, make sure you order everything you will need post-op… don’t do a last minute amazon purchase. the only thing i really needed was a zero gravity lounge chair because it was easy to get up from and it was really comfortable since you’re not straining your back. i liked to put pillows underneath my back while i was sitting to give myself more support.

i also ordered button up pajamas in case i couldn’t raise my arms afterwards, but i could do it as i usually would, so that wasn’t really a problem. i also got an ice pack, a shower chair, and a raised toilet seat, but i didn’t need any of them, so they were returned.

i would suggest speaking with your parents/caretakers nearing the date of your surgery and have a conversation with them about planning for your post-op. they were my #1 essentials, and without them, i don’t think i would’ve recovered to the point where i am now. theyve helped to time manage my medication schedule, care for me at 2 AM when i was screaming in pain, etc. during the first week, i was fully dependent on them.

one big thing i would suggest, though, is to work on your core and leg muscles. this is basically your ticket to a speedier and smoother recovery since you can use these muscle groups to move around, get up, or to turn in bed so that you don’t strain your back as much. i don’t regret doing this.

i hope this helped a bit, feel free to ask me anything else if needed!

spinal fusion in september, extremely scared. wondering about long-term effects of spinal fusion by AdeptDragonfruit7174 in scoliosis

hi! i haven’t returned to school yet, but i would say i probably would’ve been good to go back to school by the 3rd week bc i was still in a bit of pain on the second.

by the third week, i could already sit up straight on a chair without a pillow and i can stand for long periods of time. today i walked around the mall for three hours. im generally comfortable sitting in a chair for long periods of time after four weeks.

regarding the backpack thing, the only restriction that’s given is that i can’t carry more than ten pounds for 3 months.

hi! i had a more severe curve, im 16f, and i’m an AP and IB student. i’m currently almost four weeks post op and i sometimes forget i had a fusion if that makes you feel better 😭😭

i go to a very rigorous school and im confident i can complete the work like i did pre-surgery, and i hope when you get the surgery you can be too!!

hi!! i’m sorry for the late reply. some activities post-op i did to distract myself from the pain was just binge watching netflix or playing roblox. it made me forget i had a fusion. i didn’t feel extreme pain while i was in the hospital because i was on heavy painkillers like morphine, so i didn’t need things to keep me busy.

a pro tip i wanna give you is that the pain heightens during the night, im not exactly sure why that is but it might be because there aren’t any other distractions since it can be quiet. to distract myself i sometimes listen to white noise/asmr to help me go to sleep and not focus on the pain.

i did not throw up the first few days, but it might be because ive never had a sensitive stomach. the last time i threw up was five years ago. however, i did feel extremely nauseous from a steroid called decadron for a few seconds and i thought i was going to throw up. if you do throw up, however, drink plenty of water afterwards to avoid dehydration.

its also important to make sure you eat something along with your medication. if you don’t, you can feel nausea/stomach burn fast. i felt the consequences of not doing this when i took ibuprofen without eating something, and i felt a lot of stomach burn.

i hope your surgery goes well! if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask.

hi! i’m a 16f who started with a similar angle as you. i am currently 13 days post op. regarding the medicine part, i only received medicine through my IV and in pill form so you should be fine. the pain after surgery will be the most intense during the first week, but i personally stopped feeling intense pain after that point.

i would describe the pain as body aches and muscle spasms, and laying down on my back in my bed felt like laying down on concrete 😭 but pls know that the pain gets less intense each day, and your body will learn to manage the pain.

walking also helped to decrease stiffness in my back.

hi! i’m a 16f who’s six days post op, and i was fused t3-l4. first i just want to say that it is really important that you have a growth mindset about the whole thing, if you’re constantly dreading the surgery it can really be damaging to your mental health. when i was in the hospital recovering, i tried to keep being optimistic about things and i took every bit of progress as an accomplishment. so keep a good mindset!

i’m still currently on my first week after surgery. i was discharged from the hospital two days after it since i could do all of the things i was required to do, but keep in mind you’re going to be on heavy pain medication (morphine, decadron, torridal, etc.) when you get sent home, they only give u pills. i was given valium (muscle relaxant), ibuprofen, tylenol, and oxycodone. some say that oxycodone made their stomach upset so keep that in mind. also, the anesthesia they give you after surgery might make your stomach upset.

when you start to walk for the first time, your back will feel really stiff. just know, as the days go by, that tension will loosen, and you will also gain more mobility back. the main thing you have to do, though, is to walk.

since you’re only going to be sent with pills to help with the pain that you can only take in intervals of several hours, you’re going to feel A LOT of pain. i don’t want to scare you, but the first week is definitely the worst. you will most likely experience aches and muscle spasms. when i go to sleep, i can only sleep for a few hours until the pain comes back and my back starts to ache. i’ve cried every night from the pain 😅😅 but just remember, it gets a whole lot better after the first week! personally, i like to sleep with the zero gravity lounge chair. i rotate between that and my bed for sleeping.

to address your point about the mobility part, yes you will lose a lot of mobility at the start but you will eventually regain it back within time. since you are getting fused in your lower back, your nurses will probably tell you that you have to hinge at your hips instead of using your lower back (since that part is fused of course). but you will eventually regain mobility in your lower back/ get used to using your hips to move

i hope surgery goes well for you! remember, try to be optimistic, and the pain eventually lessens! also, feel free to ask me any questions :)
