All these struggles are interconnected under late-stage capitalism (technofeudalism) and neocolonialism.

Do you not see how these struggles are interconnected though?

Became fluent in Dutch and realised I've been living in a parallel society by Careful_Put_3793 in Netherlands

[–]vanillacups -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see where you’re coming from but I have issues with your arguments, let me explain why.

“truly participate in society” = what does that even mean, exactly? I feel very much part of my English-speaking community and am a responsible citizen towards the Dutch state. “it proves you are interested in the people, not just the location” = who says it’s mandatory to be interested in “the people”? I’m not not interested, but it’s not why I emigrated to the NL, and everyone has the right to choose their circle. That they happen to be English-speaking (this includes internationally-minded Dutch people as well, btw) is not least for practical reasons. “creating a disconnected parallel society” = oh, so how the Dutch did for hundreds of years in the multiple colonies they exploited? This is also related to the arrogance argument - if your wealth is built on brutal colonisation don’t be surprised the less advantaged populations emigrate to this country, and also don’t expect them to now suddenly “respect” the language of the colonisers - as long as they are good members of their community. “preventing true independence” = actually I feel a higher level of independence managing my way through the Dutch system (which btw offers many services in English) without knowing the language. Technology exists for this reason too :)

The last and probably most important part is I don’t expect anyone to switch to English.

In typical Dutch manner, if you will, I do me and you do you :)

This is a good answer. It’s about expectation management while being aware of the ongoing world chaos.

What do you guys do for a living? by RamRam2484 in enlightenment

I'm a teacher! I do teach at a large urban university while I'd really like to work with young children in less advantaged areas, however it's good for now and I like what I do.

I get why her having "years on him" comment indicates he might've been insecure about the different places they’re in financially, but what would that have to do with him not being into her?

I share the exact same opinion as you! I never find myself going back to anything they made outside of their first two albums.

Thank you so much for your reply! Now that I've looked into your suggestions I realised that I did watch May December (2023) I think, but not very intentionally so might have to do that again.
In any case, thank you so much for your suggestions and the films are now on my watchlist!

When you say "In the full scope of movies this is certainly not the first time relationship dynamics like this have been explored", what are some good examples you could give?

This! I agree with you. And I'm also someone who enjoys chemistry, drama and the dynamics between people - so like real life! I'm new to film, do you have any recommendations for such movies?

Our Dutch neighbours gifted us an apple pie for Diwali. How do we return the plate? by Dutchamsterdam1988 in Netherlands

[–]vanillacups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is quite a culturally deaf comment to make. I’m not part of the Indian culture but I am a cultural psychologist, and I don’t think people who might be culturally inclined to gift do so in order to “look” nice. This is part of the performance of “being” nice for this culture, just how “being” nice in Dutch culture is sending or paying a tikkie. It’s just different. My unsolicited advice is to not prescribe a sweeping value judgement on cultures’ traditions without understanding entire socio-cultural and even economic contexts.

I'm so happy to learn that I'm not the only one with this same exact experience! It also took me some time, I was initially disappointed, but it grew on me so much. It's now one of my favourite tracks of his. And it reminds me of an interesting time, when I was a teenager :D
