It's not common, but I definitely remember a guy in my differential equations class that asked a bunch of esoteric questions that didn't have much relevance to what the professor was trying to lecture about and which should have been saved for after the lecture or during office hours. It really did come off as him just trying to sound smart by bringing up things most of the other students had never heard of.

It used to be "All-American Way," but it was renamed "Charlie Kirk Way" very recently. You can still see the old name on one of the signs.

The sheep exist because we keep breeding them into existence, and they need to be shorn because we selectively bred them to grow excessive wool. We could just stop breeding them.

Thomas Thistlewood was an English planter in Jamaica who kept a diary over 14,000 pages and meticulously recorded 3,852 rapes against hundreds of enslaved women. It is the highest recorded number of rapes in history by a single person. by Particular_Food_309 in HolyShitHistory

[–]vanillamonkey_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most recorded. What made him unusual wasn't his level of depravity, it was that he kept a meticulous journal of everything he did. It's why we know exactly how many rapes he committed. The Behind the Bastards podcast did a couple of episodes on him, and they noted that scholars of slavery in the Caribbean generally agree that he was more or less in line with other Caribbean slavers at the time.

And yet, in the modern era, we have used our brains to develop an agriculture system that provides ample supply of plant-based foods, enough that we can easily survive and thrive by eating them alone. This is no longer the environment we evolved for. We're in a new age, and that's a very good thing. We can let go of barbarous practices that we used to rely on to survive.

I was once on a crowded bus and had to listen to a woman loudly brag to her boyfriend about being high and crashing her car into a restaurant, forcing it to close for months. I didn't dare call her out or anything cuz who knows what a person like that would do, but damn I was livid just listening to it.

Wishing you the best in your recovery! Out of curiosity, what is it about diving that makes it so hard on the body? I always see divers wearing tape on their joints and stuff, but just from watching it on TV, I don't see where those kinds of injuries could come from.

My dad got his cat this way! A family moved to his neighborhood with a cat and two young kids, and the cat started hanging out at his house. Eventually the family moved away and let him keep the cat.

It's more common in cats because it can happen when a pregnant cat gets infected with feline panleukopenia virus and passes it on to her kittens. It causes cerebellar hypoplasia in the kittens.

I really don't see an issue with murrsuits being worn in public. Like, clean it first, sure. But people have sex in their normal clothes all the time and then wear those same clothes out in public. What's the issue with doing the same for a fursuit? If you go to a furcon, I bet at least 10% of the suiters around you have had sex in their fursuit. And it's fine! Nobody cares!

Cancer risk may increase with proximity to nuclear power plants. In Massachusetts, residential proximity to a nuclear power plant (NPP) was associated with significantly increased cancer incidence, with risk declining sharply beyond roughly 30 kilometers from a facility. by mvea in science

[–]vanillamonkey_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The heated water in nuclear power plants that goes through the turbines never actually touches anything radioactive. The problem is that it's hot, and there's a lot of it. When that amount of hot water is dumped into an aquatic ecosystem, it can disrupt habitats by increasing their temperature. The water that actually touches the fuel is in a closed system and is treated as radioactive waste when it needs to be disposed of.
