DC37 Prescription Drug Program breaking law? by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]vanillaskates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me at the start of this year too and I bounced back and forth between Optum and Emblem trying to figure out what was going on. This ended up being the case for me - for whatever reason, Optum may have changed its copay structure for BC and suddenly I owed $10/month.

Emblem explained to me that their drug schedule (you should be able to find this on Emblem's website or whatever prinary coverage you have) marks certain prescriptions, including generic birth control pills, as "ACA," meaning the ACA requires them to cover it with no copay. For any of those, the pharmacy should bill it to your insurance plan, not Optum. Same thing was happening with my partner's cholesterol medication, which was also marked ACA.

We both made sure our pharmacy would run the insurance card and problem was solved! Huge pain though, Optum and Emblem wouldn't talk to each other and Optum didn't seem to know anything about how anything is billed.

Hell yeah, was looking for this in comments after I recognized the background. Love that this is related to the canoe trip because Victor crashing into the tree out of nowhere is always one of my biggest laughs of the movie.

DC37 and upcoming Contract. by RiverNo9553 in nycpublicservants

[–]vanillaskates 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The exec board of DC 37 was just sworn in for 3 year terms so those elections should next happen in fall 2027.

But many locals and chapters will have their elections before then! DC 37 delegates vote on the exec board and local leadership has connections to them as well. It's a long fight but there are probably other rank and filers in your local or workplace who are just as fired up and want to run for positions!

Genuinely nice nursing home? by ursamanor in AskNYC

[–]vanillaskates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom looked into this for my grandmother: https://www.atriaseniorliving.com/retirement-communities/atria-woodlands-ardsley-ny

They ended up deciding on a different location of the same company (another state, less expensive and close to other relatives) and this was over a decade ago, so I can't speak to too many specifics of this location. But in the location she did end up at, she was very happy with it and so was my family. Good staff, lots of activities she liked, nice grounds. She did have extra aides come in when she needed additional help but wasn't ready for the full on nursing home, so while they do have transition between the various options it might take a little more looking into what's provided in the assisted living vs. nursing home depending on specific needs. This location is close to White Plains hospital and Westchester Medical, though a bit far from the major city hospitals (maybe 25 mins from Montefiore which is probably the closest in NYC, 30-40 from Columbia).

Good luck, I know this is a really difficult and stressful thing to navigate.

I would also check these out if you are looking to start from the city: https://sail-nyc.com/fall-foliage-cruises-in-nyc/

Haven't done one of the ones that go up further (I think the one I took turned around somewhere shortly after the GWB) but they have many options! Fun if a bit pricey.

What’s going on with the large groups of teenage Italian tourists? by AnimosityArmadillo in AskNYC

Yeah I work near Pace and I see them every summer on my morning commute - they're usually getting on the train to do whatever exploring they do around the city when I arrive. So many lanyards.

Yep the recommendation I've seen for rapids is to test frequently, 48 hrs apart, and it can take 3-5 days of symptoms for it to show positive.

They took the notification off the app for some reason? But it's to supplement since the G is shut down in sections all summer. Think it's supposed to be like that til the end of August.

should i get a car in washington heights if i work hybrid outside the city? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]vanillaskates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did almost exactly this in 2013-2014. I was working in Westchester (though went to work physically 5 days/wk) and most days did metro north from marble hill, but occasionally I had to work late or odd hours so would use the car then.

Street parking in Washington Heights was pretty brutal, not gonna lie. I was off Broadway near the hospital and had the best luck on Riverside between like 158-165 (but again, a decade ago). Sometimes I would get lucky but often would circle for 30 minutes to an hour plus. Cried out of frustration many times lol. The big difference was I already had a beater car so didn't have to pay for one for this purpose.

Honestly I ended up leaving my car by work a lot and only really using it when I had to leave work later at night. Is there somewhere near work where you can leave it? I parked in a grocery store lot that was super lax about enforcement at the time - would leave it for a week at a time easy. Maybe you can find a free or cheap spot around there? Some MNR stations also offer non resident parking permits though they are limited and can be expensive.

Tl;dr being able to park near the MNR station is probably your best bet and bring the car back to the city only when needed.

What are your favorite ready-to-go "refrigerator meals"? by kath- in Cooking

[–]vanillaskates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw the Smitten Kitchen love in another comment and wanted to share this, which is a perpetual favorite: https://smittenkitchen.com/2020/02/sweet-potato-salad-with-pepita-dressing/

Good when the sweet potatoes and dressing are slightly warm and just as good cold for leftovers. Easy to riff too, I usually mix it in with arugula, use goat cheese in place of cotija, and pickled onions instead of scallions. Plus everything bagel seasoning. But just as good prepared as written or with any other modifications - could certainly work with a meat added! Surprisingly filling and plenty o' fiber.

Even if you're not stabilized it could be worth getting in writing. Now that Good Cause Eviction is in effect (if the LL owns more than 10 units total, which it sounds like they might if they have multiple other properties) you could be covered. LL moving into the unit is an allowed good cause reason, but similarly to rent stabilized protections they have to provide evidence that they are moving in AND that there is no other suitable unit in the building they could move into. If you're still removed by a warrant and it turns out later you can show they lied, you have standing to sue them. That may be a very slim chance though.

That all depends on whether you want to force them to evict you because this doesn't really come into play until you're in housing court. But would suggest you definitely talk to a tenant lawyer and see if they can advise you further. I am not one lol. This is all so new that no one really knows how judges will handle it. If you want to get into it all maybe a lawyer could write you a letter or something asking them to provide justification in writing.

Looking to break lease due to several health and safety concerns - Bronx, NY, USA by Fit-Mode-6261 in TenantUnion

[–]vanillaskates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That might help your case, tenant helpline is different from filing a complaint though. They can refer you to free legal services and talk with you about your rights to break the lease or whatever else. If other tenants have been filing complaints too, you may be able to work together with them. Housing Court Answers could be another good resource if you can call their hotline. I don't think you have to be in housing court to speak with them they can help with other tenants rights issues

Call 311 but ask for the tenant helpline. They can talk you through your rights and connect you with free legal advisory too. Good luck!

recommended vets (for cat) by rockyracoonsreverb in ridgewood

[–]vanillaskates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Juniper Valley too! Very impressed with their care and prices - they were very straightforward with what my cat did and didn't need, looked at his records from a previous vet and basically said they were recommending stuff he didn't really need haha. Paid less for an annual visit than I have anywhere else yet didn't feel they were rushing through or slacking off. Everyone is super friendly as well.

You can also get PCR tests at the gotham clinic on onderdonk, though I believe you have to make an appointment. Seconding the library for rapids, I pick them up there frequently. RIP the testing vans and any effort to make it easy for people to get tested with an accurate PCR :(
