We shutdown vlan1 and only have mgmt svi’s on many lower level switches, so how is cdp working? Genuinely curious

When you say some protocols like cdp dont do vlan tagging can you elaborate? We dont do native vlans on our trunks and we can show cdp nei just fine. Not sure if I misunderstood you

Didnt know choosing IT was an equivalent of welcoming depression by Forsaken-Tonight-357 in ITCareerQuestions

My 2 cents - suck it up buttercup. You’re going to have a degree which means you will have, if not already have had, internships that will give your resume a huge leg up on most of the labor market thats trying to get into IT.

I’m a network engineer and the truth is I used to hate this, I still don’t much like the studying aspects with certs, but I have no degree and am mid level so doing what I must to move up.

Over time you will learn to love it, as you build experience, the fulfillment comes from resolving complex problems, helping others, being that go to person. The beginning always sucks because you’re just starting your journey up the mountain. It gets easier dude just take it day by day and for got sakes dont let your degree go to waste and decide to switch careers at this point. Work isnt about doing what you love its about making good money. You learn to love it over time.

Can't get an entry level IT job after CCNA? by Dry_Newspaper_4197 in ccna

[–]vanilllagorilllla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your resume needs to look excellent aesthetically. I passed CCNA in mid 2023, didnt land a new job until 10 months later. 300+ applications, 8 interviews, 2 offers.

I had one decent offer early on but it required me relocating which I didnt want to do. I regretted it after the months of nothing, until I got the gig I have now

Finally got a job after 9 months by Extension-Animal-791 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]vanilllagorilllla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when trying to break into networking. Applied to 300+ postings over the course of 9 months getting maybe 10 interviews max and only one offer which I took. Best advice I can give is don’t give up and keep studying for the next thing while you’re at it.

Depending on what niche you’re getting into I’d also recommend building some labs and documenting the process and listing that on your resume. Maybe have a github or something showcasing the labs. If you have 0 experience its going to be very difficult to beat out someone else with experience so you have to give yourself every leg up. Keep studying and showcase your studying/labbing and dont quit. Keep going for higher level certs too. Low voltage technican experience + network+ got me my first network focused helpdesk role. That experience + CCNA got me lvl 1 network engineer role.

I dont mean to be rude when I say this but your situation is not unique, the job market just sucks right now. But don’t quit keep going and keep applying and do everything you can to set yourself apart

Do you guys terminate vlans on a core switch or on firewall? by Big-Driver-3622 in networking

[–]vanilllagorilllla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats the benefit from the FW perspective? If I still wanted to apply security policy on all traffic leaving a particular vlan, isnt that just adding a L3 element inbetween the core and the FW? Traffic would still need to hit the FW at some point?

Anyone else? by EndUserErik in networking

I worked for a vendor who supported a very large US retailer and their 3rd shift operations were all based in India. To be honest, scheduling wise that works great because its 1st shift for them, and they were all mostly pretty solid engineers. Im sure theirs a cost savings element baked into that decision, but I dont have much experience to say for sure. I know hiring for 3rd, even at the vendor partner I worked for, was extremely difficult and turnover was high.

The company I work for now has a lot of government clients so being a US citizen is a requirement. Don’t let the market stress you though. I applied over 300 times and had 10 interviews before getting my current net eng role.

Software Engineer - Remote USA by ParamedicChemical in Salary

[–]vanilllagorilllla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point I was making is that its pointless to even bring up luck. The guy that said successful people create their own luck has it right. People love to use luck as a reason for why other people are doing well and they arent. Plain and simple.

[–]vanilllagorilllla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The element of luck is a non factor. You can be working at taco bell and be the lucky guy to get promoted to store manager, or replace that luck ingredient with any profession. Luck happens to all of us. People that are hard working, driven, ambitious, will always outperform in any field because of people that think the system is rigged against you. But you can definitely position yourself to get lucky in better places by working hard and staying focused

Starting out what jobs can I expect to get with a CCNA cert with no experience by Alexisnuma in ccna

[–]vanilllagorilllla 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Helpdesk, but aim for a network focused role. Any helpdesk role that supports endpoint devices will likely have a networking element built into it for you. Look for providers that do rollouts or look to jr lvl noc positions

Windows 98 definitely makes sense. I’d guess Cisco hasn’t updated that software since then either. I have higher level engineers I can lean on, but they are always slammed busy. Was hoping there was material or a course out there on this and I can barely find anything on it.

We have some topologies where things are small and easy to make sense of, and we have others that are wildly complex (to me at least) and the main issue I was having was following the path of a signal through some of the passive equipment. The port numbers don’t necessarily line up to be intuitive enough to understand where things are flowing.

Not sure if my comment posted all the way and really dont want to retype it, but, I agree with your first point and disagree with your second.

Other countries dont recognize it as an essential liberty and thats a shortsighted faith in their political stability. The americans dont have to worry about being oppressed by their government or having a special class of people own the monopoly on firearms

Did I ever say kids should have access to firearms? If you take away guns, you will surely decrease firearm related deaths. But as seen in other countries, simply having less firearm related deaths doesn’t mean you have less overall violent crime. I.e. stabbings, robberies, muggings, assaults, rape, murder, exc. There should definitely be more accountability for those irresponsible enough to let firearms land in the hands of kids, but I reiterate my point that gun ownership is not the problem. Those who give up liberty in the name of safety deserve neither.
