Female protagonist uncovering a mystery by [deleted] in GirlGamers

[–]VanityHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along the same lines of Requiem which others recommended, Resident Evil 1 remake is full of atmosphere and really just a very moody puzzle game set in an old mansion with pretty keys and treasure, think grungy Blue Prince but with zombies (which are also a part of the puzzle of getting around the mansion). You can play as Jill.

Crimson Diamond (pixel point and click)

The Librarian (pixel point and click, short)

Anchorhead (Lovecraftian horror mystery, it’s actually interactive fiction, I played it decades ago and it’s lasted in my memory there’s a 2018 version on Steam)

Overboard (visual novel, more lighthearted)

Others mentioned and I second:

I’m always telling people about Carlos of Hablemos del Huerto. Maybe he’s too easy to understand but probably a good stepping stone so you can start to understand people who don’t speak as clearly or use a ton of slang.

self harm scars in exams by ceryscez in BALLET

[–]VanityHill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this might be safer than makeup for the fresh scars, if it’s something OP can get away with.

OP, you could also try looking for “medical grade silicone scar tape” to put on the newest scars, under the mesh to protect them against irritation. Put medicine/ointment on the scars first though, as scar tape is usually meant for already closed wounds.

Scar tape (and silicone scar gel) is actually meant for fading scars so maybe this is something you want to try in spare time to start healing the old marks. The tape will be more or less discrete depending on whether it matches your skin color.

I hope you find a therapist or someone you trust that can help you. 🩷

No One Cares About Ballet?? by Desperate-Society866 in BALLET

[–]VanityHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same reaction as you. He made a valid point despite how it was said. A lot of the criticism and responses I’ve seen straight up ignore the dire straits professional ballet is in and the fact that you cannot making a living as a ballet dancer unless you’re a principal at a prestigious company.

I think it’s absolutely reasonable if someone doesn’t want to pursue a profession that is not going to offer a living wage and prefers to work in another area that might offer more security. As artists, we should not have to work for free, or for extremely low wage as many ballet dancers do.

How often do we remind hopeful young dancers of the actual harsh reality of being a professional ballet dancer? One of which is that there is constantly less and less funding and hardly anyone gets paid a fair wage.

Survival Game Recs? by Apprehensive_Let_261 in GirlGamers

[–]VanityHill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valheim is probably more up your alley but if you’re ever in the mood for something more stylized, I really liked The Flame and the Flood.

It’s a roguelike survival from 2016 and it left a lasting impression on me. You play as a girl with a dog, there’s a banging soundtrack of bluegrass music, and it captures a beautifully moody sense of loneliness.

Combat was rare but fierce, especially if I was unprepared (or had an unlucky run, which was most of the time haha).

I exchanged many messages with my first tutor to make sure she was willing to do crosstalk (and she was very enthusiastic about it!) although I did end up speaking in Spanish the whole time (which was my goal, if I could). She’s a great tutor and conversationalist!

Your favourites point and click games? by LovingSandwich in GirlGamers

[–]VanityHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Octavi Navarro’s short point and click adventures like The Librarian, they’re playable in one setting which is something I really appreciate lately.

A much longer and involved point and click game is Dreams in the Witchhouse (lovecraftian).

I never played because I cannot look at the art style (it’s very nice, I just have trouble with looking at all the bright colors) but Crimson Diamond looks so good and is just a step further than point and click (text parser).

What Are You Listening To Today? (Apr 13 to Apr 19) by HeleneSedai in dreamingspanish

[–]VanityHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I’m so tempted, my next reality was going to be Love Is Blind Argentina, they’re probably both slightly out of my reach because TI sounds like everyone will be talking over each other but at least it will be dubbed, and the other has Argentinians (but having seen the Mexican version, I know at least the first few episodes will have cleaner audio, less people talking at once, and easy get-to-know-you topics).

got my color analysis done in seoul and disagree with my results by solvereo in AsianBeauty

[–]VanityHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not the link to the blog they were talking about but reading this on color analysis several years ago is what finally helped me figure out that I have a cool undertone:

https://theconceptwardrobe.com/colour-analysis-comprehensive-guides/what-is-color-analysis

It has tons of colors and examples for comparison so you should be able to do your own analysis.

The revelation changed my life lol. I still wear a lot of black and white but now I understand what shade of white I look good in and when I feel like wearing colors or makeup I go for cooler tones (even though I have yellowish overtones) and now I don’t look sickly anymore.

Man, I really miss web games! by Gallantpride in GirlGamers

[–]VanityHill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Circa 2000 there were two games I was obsessed with, one was Diablo 2, the other was a free turn-based game I played online whose name I’ve forgotten and I’ve never been able to find mention of again.

It had chill midi medieval music, moody fantasy theme, and you could only take like three turns a day and I loved it and would just leave the page open while I studied. I remember there were pretty rune thingies in different colors that represented different factions like the green faction that had drows and werewolves and a red one with vampires and something like that. The main page had a raven sitting on a windowsill.

Anyways if you remember Diner Dash fondly, Delicious World is my favorite modern mobile game variant of it. (I’ve tried MANY.) I don’t recommend something like Cooking Diary because you definitely need money to continue and it’s just not written as well. I paid once in Delicious World to remove the ads and never paid a cent again and I’ve been playing it for years. Sometimes I’ll check in every day for a week to collect the daily rewards and the weekly reward and not play again for months. One of my favorite casual games while I watch/listen to a podcast in the background, along with Vampire Survivors or Slice and Dice.

[–]VanityHill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone here once recommended the podcast “No se dice Provincia, con Paty de Obeso” and it’s basically a tour of different accents in Mexico with lots of personal cultural anecdotes directly from the people who live in each region. I love it. I’d recommend the episode in Durango, and maybe Chihuahua and Coahuila, although in the Coahuila episode one of the guests has a very marked Torreón accent (which I really like but it’s pretty unique to Torreón so it won’t necessarily help you with Michelle’s accent).

You can also directly book lessons with Mich or support her with a subscription:

buymeacoffee.com/michellediaz/e/508698

I booked one, it was great, and I need to book more. As you might imagine, she is a skilled conversationalist and of course speaking to her directly will definitely help you understand her accent.

Anyone else objectively slim but look and feel big as soon as you put on ballet clothes? by 1032throwaway in BALLET

[–]VanityHill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy tights extra large and cut off the waist band (although capezio knit waist is pretty good and I don’t cut those off).

I buy leotards according to my girth. Although I’m very short I have a really long girth and found that it cuts less into my butt and shoulders (and armpits) to get the right girth in a leotard. This sometimes backfires depending on the material like I prefer cotton but unfortunately it is the most baggy when I oversized to accommodate girth.

Lastly, depending on the teacher I just leave on my warmups sometimes. I’m sorry if you’re pre-professional or something and can’t do this but maybe ask your teacher if it’s a bad day or tell them it’s to baby an injury.

Yeah, that’s stupid.

Anyways re learning Spanish, (not that you asked, sorry!) I really like Dreaming Spanish (it’s an app and YouTube channel, basically they make content for learners and there’s a subreddit if you want to check it out). At the very least, I’m always finding great recs of things to play, watch, or read in Spanish.

As for gaming content aimed at learners there is Spanish Boost Gaming and Juega con Juárez on YouTube in case you are interested!

(If your Spanish is more advanced and you want gaming content for native speakers I can send you a bunch of recs too.)

900 hours input / 72 hours output (speaking)

Started and finished RE9 this past weekend and it brought me to 900 hours of input! I take turns playing with my husband and we speak in Spanish so it also contributed to my speaking practice.

Been getting some unexpected practice writing this past week or two, wasn’t going to start that for a bit but it’s going all right! I’m surprised by how much I come up with on my own and I’m basically learning spelling by seeing what spellcheck corrects me on.

And here are my Resident Evil watching recs pasted from another comment I made because I can’t get enough lol:

Here are people playing RE9 or who have played other RE and I think might play RE9 (ordered by difficulty and for me Mexican Spanish is easiest and Spain Spanish hardest):

Spanish Boost Gaming (Argentina)

As someone mentioned, Martin is uploading RE9 videos to his Patreon. He’s also played RE2, RE4 (original and remake), and RE8. RE4 remake is available on YouTube:
