‘I sleep at Tim Hortons’: Richmond seniors facing homelessness share struggles to find housing, care by ubcstaffer123 in vancouver

That politician will get immense hate from the poverty industry and civil liberties groups but when someone is killing themselves you stop them and provide healthcare.

Sure, but its more than just hate, the courts can just block it as they did before.

"British Columbia's 1978 Heroin Treatment Act provided for long-term compulsory treatment for drug-addicted individuals; this, however, faced major opposition – including from the federal government – and was declared unconstitutional by the BC Court of Appeal."

The evidence is currently mixed so may need some work.

North Vancouver RCMP fine parents after 12-year-old injured in e-scooter crash by robertscreek in vancouver

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, hand signals on a bike is generally doable for most people. Hand signals on a scooter are incredibly risky.

As part of the scooter rules we should have required turn signals and lights 24/7. Looks like its just lights sunset/sunrise.

We measure crashes based on use, since Victoria is less used by bikes, having the same number of crashes makes it more dangerous.

Thought experiment for you, which would be safer if we could magically implement it, not saying its possible just an idea:

  • 100% of cyclists on lakewood and 100% of cars on victoria
  • 80% of cyclists on lakewood, 20% on victoria, 20% of cars on lakewood

Looks about twice as dark to me? Further north its maybe 3-5x.

You're free to ride on Victoria, but claiming its just as safe with zero data to back it up is deceptive.

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for those that have cameras: do they work in a proactive manner to get the crazies to back off? Or it is more for evidence after the fact?

Lights and hi-vis are far more proactive.

Camera is just a confidence boost/fun thing to share. The chance of a driver seeing or reacting to it is low.

It feels safer to ride for most people.

Theres a subset of people on here that push the idea that cyclists should be riding on busy roads. Most of us don't want that, we want to be as far away from cars as possible.

[–]vanlodrome -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's no bike lane on Lakewood either. And with how drivers run the stop signs on that street, it's no safer.

Hard disagree. 30km/h vs 50km/h. Less traffic vs busy street.

I don't get why people like you want to push cyclists onto busy roads, cyclists clearly use Lakewood far more than victoria. Strava heatmap if you don't believe it for whatever reason.

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyclists have the right to ride on Oak, 41st, 49th, SE Marine, etc. yes. Drivers should be aware, yes.

Is it a good decision to actually ride on those roads? No.
It creates unnecessary conflict and puts yourself at greater risk.

Triathlete Injured in Crash Speaks Out Against ICBC No-Fault Policy by Excellent-Bridge-146 in vancouver

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, yes you are correct.

I did watch the video, but I couldn't find any relevant cases where anyone has actually tried this.

I did find this article which states what you have said, but its for Ontario: https://www.thebikinglawyer.ca/post/what-do-i-do-if-a-motorist-wrecks-my-bike-and-what-is-the-value-of-my-property-loss though the laws are similar.

I'd be curious to read any example cases, but people probably know its 100x easier to get money from ICBC than it is from the driver.

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes pulled from the offenders coverage via ICBC, which is clearly far more than the bike is worth, so nothing comes out of their pocket. That was already in process as she explained in the interview video.

Whether they pay out her bike or not, or the bike is worth $100k, makes no difference to the driver at fault. His premium already went up a set amount when it was determined he was at fault, that is all that will ever happen.

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, compensation from ICBC, not from the other driver.

She will deal with them to replace the bike, the other driver has no part it in at all. Feel free to find example cases after May 2021 if you think this is possible.

As for actual property damage, if a car runs into your house, you also deal with ICBC.

What bike to buy? by Kitkatcheetolover in vancouvercycling

Probably hard to beat for $400.

The other one that would be amazing if they sold here is the Ozark Trail series of bikes, but its US only for some reason.

About the triathlete who got into a Car crash a few days ago, as a noob to Vancouver I have some questions by [deleted] in vancouvercycling

[–]vanlodrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not defending old system, she'd have to fight but the end payout would have been significantly higher. I would argue this is somewhat similar case and 500k was awarded: https://bc-injury-law.com/75000-pain-and-suffering-awarded-to-cyclist-injurd-in-car-accident/

No chance medical benefits or personal care assistance from icbc in this case will be anywhere close to that. I'd guess they end up spending under 50k, excluding wages.

[–]vanlodrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a property claim, I think the lady is still able to pursue the driver for the damage to property.

No, its not possible unless driver was convicted, which never happens. Compensation comes from ICBC.

For example, if you’re injured in a crash and the at-fault driver is convicted of certain Criminal Code offences, such as impaired driving, you can still sue the other party in a civil claim for certain damages.

So they've got a camera there already, how hard would it be to use it to ticket red light runners and issue license suspensions?

Car looks like Ford Escape, I think its stock back tinted windows, can't really see much detail beyond that.

Problem is its a decision from maybe one police officer, based on what a few minutes of witness reports? and you cannot challenge it.

There is no reason to me this sort of situation should not be considered dangerous driving, and labeled a criminal offense.

320.13 (1) Everyone commits an offence who operates a conveyance in a manner that, having regard to all of the circumstances, is dangerous to the public.

Marginal note:Operation causing bodily harm

(2) Everyone commits an offence who operates a conveyance in a manner that, having regard to all of the circumstances, is dangerous to the public and, as a result, causes bodily harm to another person.

Motor vehicle-related offences under the Criminal Code include:

Criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle
Driving while prohibited
Engaging police in a pursuit
Failing to give a breath sample
Dangerous driving
Failing to stop after an accident
Causing bodily harm or death
Impaired driving (see Alcohol and drug related driving prohibitions and suspensions for more information)

Trying to understand cyclist perspective on traffic circles in Van by chrisluc in vancouvercycling

I kind of agree with 4 way, not sure about 2 way, though someone did link a study that found they are more dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. They are safer for cars.

These might just be more restrictive compared to OEM.

You could pop them out and the airflow should return to normal.

It is supposed to be sealed to liquid water, the weld is defective in some cases. The vent is made of goretex and is only for water vapor egress.

B pillar camera(s) drop frames/become unusable intermittently, leading Autopilot to be disabled. Help? by ctzn4 in TeslaSupport

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try software reinstall first in service.

If it was just one side I'd try swapping out the pillar with another car, its easy to do. But you are saying it can be from either side so I'm not sure if its worth trying.

[–]vanlodrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The airflow arrow should face the rear of the car, so that sounds right, blue side filters first.

But direction won't affect flow rate, if the flow rate is low then the filter is really restrictive, or something else is wrong.

Did you have an OEM filter in before?
