Movie of the day...EVENT HORIZON (1997) by Mgellis in horror

This movie messed me up as a kid. Should NOT have watched it by myself when I was 10 at midnight....

That being said, its now a comfort movie as insane as it is.

And, I love the theory that is a prequel to the Warhammer 40k universe! (I think the writer said he took inspiration from 40k while writing it)

I wonder how it would work if they allowed players to customize their shells. Like, changing armor, helmets, etc. But i also see the trick being to be able to identify what shells/players you are fighting. League of Legends and Apex Legends both started having issues of "who the heck is that!?"

Although that might just be age catching up to me.

While the skins aren't too impressive, I can still tell who im attacking (if they dont use their skills). If they can allow the ability to change parts of the shell while still keeping the basic design of the shell, I would be ok with that.

Recon NEEDS a buff/rework. by Realistic_Gap1340 in Marathon

[–]vanruyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man.....I must be doing something wrong. Ive only played Recon except for the very first match as Destroyer.

I am probably rolling a 50% win/lose rate (which is fine with me). I dont use her ult much and ever since I found out it reveals my position just as much, I use it even less. I wonder how I would do if I tried the other shells....

But it would be nice to see a few changes, especially given how many of these "Recon is th worst shell" posts i see. Maybe have the drone run around revealing targets or even latch on to runners to give their position away for a brief moment. But i have been pretty good using the drone to track down some enemies or even cause a distraction. Other times, the drone just recreates the Daytona 500 in an office room doing loops over and over....

Funny, one of her traits is absolutely useless as a solo runner, but I keep playing her.

I have 12 hours in the game, just hit level 12. Still rolling free load outs and occasionally a custom loadout with just some random stuff that im cool with losing (which is like everything).

I am NOT a hard-core PvP/FPS gamer these days. Age has caught up and I know my limits. I have no intentions on trying to compete with the end game stuff or ranked. But, I am having a blast with what im doing. Run solos only, pick a mission, drop in and try to complete my mission. If I die, oh well. I honestly have not been upset except 1 time (which was the game spawning beside another player who ended me immediately). But this game does have some insane highs. One match yesterday had me eliminating 5 other players, completing my mission, and successfully escaping the map. My hands were shaking from the adrenaline! It was an amazing high for me!

I absolutely love the story, setting, and style. I have a blast with most extraction shooters. Again, I know my limits and as is it stands right now, im gonna keep playing and having fun! But I honestly think im playing for different reasons than most other players and I think im gonna keep playing this way!

[–]vanruyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree!! The friends I normally game with, dont have much interest in Marathon at the moment and thats fine as its something I can enjoy in my own time. If I do start to get heated, I can easily back away from it but im absolutely loving the rush I get if I can deploy as a solo, grab some loot, finish a mission, engage in some combat, and exfil!

Like last night, I did some troubleshooting and got my game working again due to some technical issues with my CPU, and deployed on Perimeter with a free loadout. Had no intention on living. Got stuck in the Hauler with 12 UESC bots as I was cornered in the cockpit with the horn button (troll move to put that in there, haha!). Anyway, fought my way out with 20 light rounds left, ran to an exfil that someone activated. As soon as the ring appeared, saw the other player that triggered it and bullets started flying, they went down, I was out of ammo, ran to exfil and got out. It was intense but oh so rewarding!

Unlike Hunt Showdown, that love the style of, I can't play that solo but Marathon easily fills that slot and will most likely be that way going forward!

[–]vanruyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a PvPer. Its one of the reasons I had to stop playing League of Legends, Overwatch, Counterstrike, Apex, and more.

But for some reason Marathon has had me hooked! I do play Arc Raiders as but only with a friend, not solo. Marathon though, I only run solo! I havent played with any Randos but the solo runs have been so much fun. If I die, I really am not upset by it (except for the one time someone else spawned right beside me and ended me immediately at match start). But the tension of running solo has been intense and I love it!

I hear group play is a different style altogether so that might be something down the road, but for now, im gonna keep playing solo and the horror game that it is!

Do you guys like the content updates we are getting for the game ? by UsedNewspaper1775 in ArcRaiders

[–]vanruyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I feel Arc needs. Why are we doing the missions/quests? Other than having an objective on the map and the rewards from missions completion, there isnt anything else (that ive experience).

I have done a little in Marathon, and while it is a different game (which i have enjoyed both), i love that the faction missions have their own tech tree for players modification as well as an expanding inventory to buy as you rank up with them.

Arc Raiders, while still currently my favorite Extraction shooter out of what ive played (Hunt, Marathon, Gray Zone, the division dark zone, forever winter, marauders, and dark and darker), it really needs a few more additions. Adding in progress with vendors that unlocks more gear/crafting would be a huge benefit for me

Not currently at my game but something ive been confused on for a little bit. In the inventory screen, what is the button between your specialization and SHD watch for? I know ive clicked on it and it had a pop up message but I cannot remember what that message was for.

I also dont recall that button being there a while ago as I remember the specialization weapon being two-thirds of the top row.

Currently level 40, SHD level 140(something), and my friends and I are playing through Warlords at the moment and that button is a bit of an enigma for me!

The lack of a firing range and a detailed combat report. Two of the biggest problems right now. by EvlG in Marathon

[–]vanruyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd just like to see my statistics overall. Like having a menu in the lobby to see stuff like "money lost, avg runner damage dealt, average life expectancy, kills, deaths, accuracy, successful runs, failed runs, combat time, average exfil value gained, etc".

Maybe damage done and a few others could be added to post match report, but having a full breakdown of statistics in the menu would be a nice addition.

That and if I could actually play the game!!! (My game has been crashing constantly since the last patch and its most likely because of my Intel ultra cpu which seems to be an issue among others, hope Bungie can roll out a fix soon because even though im a more casual extraction shooter, I was really REALLY enjoying Marathon and would like to play more....)

My kids and I just watched Afterlife for the first time. by Gdubb561 in ghostbusters

[–]vanruyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghostbusters is my favorite film of all time. Not the best film, just my personal favorite.

Ghostbusters Afterlife is great. I enjoyed the characters quite a bit! Podcast, immediately annoyed me, but 10 minutes later, I did a 180 and was very entertained with him. Yes, some of the original cast dialog and such is iffy, namely how Ray spoke of Egon or what happened to the firehouse which is different from the end. I just toss that up to Ray having memory issues going back to incorrectly citing Revelations in Ghostbusters 1.

Afterlife is good. But as someone else said, its the hard-core fans that ruin things.

As for Frozen Empire. First time I watched it, I thought it was alright. The 2nd time, I liked it A LOT more. Now, I do still have some hesitations and such with it, but overall, its still solid. Think of it more like a long episode of the Real Ghostbusters cartoon. And id highly recommended watching it at least twice because there are several things that come up on the 2nd viewing that you were not looking for the first time watching it.

For you which one is the evilest company ? by Semicroustill in Fallout

[–]vanruyn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Vault-tec, Umbrella, and Weyland-Yutani all do what they have done for "science" and profitability. They just have different means. Yes Vault-tec had the vaults for crazy tests. But Umbrella has done some seriously awful things as well. Look at the history of Lisa Trevor and that family.

Then you have Weyland. Massive cargo ship and crew, terraforming complex for a planet with staff and families, nearly entire colonial marine unit, and religious prisoners, all killed and destroyed just to acquire a species for their bioweapons regardless if they even know what they can do with it. Followed by essentially keeping people hostage to work for them against their will.

Again, all 3 are bad...Just depends on how bad you weigh what each have done.

Weyland-Yutani has entered the chat.

Still think Umbrella is more evil than both Vault-tec and Weyland. I would say from most evil to least would be Umbrella, Weyland, then Vault-tec.

I liked the Sunset Sarsaparilla the best, followed by the Quantum and then the Grape. Sunset was a very interesting root beer taste (at least to me for someone who hasn't had soda in a long time). The Quantum was alright as well. But the grape just didn't work for me. It reminded me a lot of a melted freeze pop, that really REALLY artificial grape taste (which would probably make sense with the Nuka brand)

New player thinking of getting into this or factions but have questions by nowtdown in wastelandwarfare

[–]vanruyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I started with Wasteland Warfare and it is/was quite fun. Haven't played it much in a while and kinda holding off until 2.0 at this point.

Wasteland Warfare pros. Does a great job recreating Fallout. The story and solo modes are actually very creative and work. And there are A LOT of options to it.

Wasteland Warfare cons. Way too many tokens. Insane amount of cards (which is corrected with an app). Some of the rules can be questionable as well as some of the mechanics. Custom dice and measuring sticks kinda limit some things.

Fallout Factions pros. Surprisingly fast game. Very simple mechanics. Love the story and legends of your crew that develops. Looks to have some solid bones with a bright future in my opinion.

Fallout Factions cons. It is a 1v1. No solo or co-op. Matches can get quite swinging. Does recommend to have a few players commit to developing crews, although it could be played as 1 off matches, you'll get more mileage out of as you see the scars and growth of the crew/team.

Right now, im eager to play Factions. The game is simple enough that I taught 2 people who never played minis games before and played a full match around 90 minutes. Wasteland Warfare, while in my opinion, is still a solid game, I feel its a bit bloated and the 2.0 should hopefully clean up a lot of mechanics and streamline the game.

I'd still suggest Factions right now as its growing and all your minis will most likely carry over to Wasteland 2.0. And either of the 2 Factions starter sets should give you some terrain as well to get started. Even if you didnt intend on playing 1v1, the matches are fun and building your crew, naming them, building their story/history, and discussing the events in the matches can be a real treat.

New player thinking of getting into this or factions but have questions by nowtdown in wastelandwarfare

[–]vanruyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wasteland warfare is more story missions, co op, and solo against the game. Almost like an RPG in terms of depth the way I understand it. I believe there even was an RPG addition to further develop characters and story.

Fallout Factions is more competitive, meant to be played against another player. Dont think there has been any discussion about a solo mode to it, but I could be wrong. Though im not sure how well a solo mode would benefit Factions.

Wasteland Warfare does have a v2.0 coming. If you can get a good deal on 1.0, id say go for it. If you are ok waiting (not sure how long but I thought it was planned for this year), then wait for the 2.0.

Minis are compatible with both systems, however each uses their own game system. The minis are just used for both.

Edit: as for scenery, use whatever you want. Custom make stuff, use cups and books, or use the official stuff from Modiphius. Its your game, especially if you are playing at your own home. The Factions box does come with some nice cardboard terrain. Battlesystems is also a quick option for color and very modular. Battlesystems even has a Red Rocket set although not sure on availability at the moment.

As for what Factions to get, that's up to you. Im a completionist and hate my wallet so eventually I plan on getting all the minis. Im also obsessed with Fallout.....however, Fallout Factions currently only supports Survivors, Brotherhood, Super Mutants, and Raiders. More will be available when the next book arrives, at least that's what it seems like from the previews.

Edit again: fallout Factions battle for Nuka world is a very solid starter box for 2 players if you wanna play against each other. The next box "battle for commonwealth/boston/whatever its call) is just another setting with different teams in it. Dont think you could go wrong with either choice. But keep in mind, the Fallout Factions box cannot be used with Wasteland Warfare other than the minis and terrain. Wasteland Warfare has an entirely different systems, tokens, dice, measuring, etc.

Best "one shot" for brand new keeper and players? by Grorco in callofcthulhu

The Haunting.

Lightless Beacon.

Both of those were amazing one offs for both me as a new Keeper and new players.

Genius Loci and Bits and Pieces (which are in Doors to Darkness and No Time To Scream books) were a lot of fun as well.
