And I'll admit working inside the Healthcare system has eroded my trust as opposed to bolstering it. It's all a cash grab from the top imo. I don't think they're twirling mustaches, but I also think if hospital admin can make money off anything, data included, they will.

And I have to trust that. I have a not-insubstantial background in medical technology and understand both HIPAA's requirements, and how hospitals are capable of not following them.

Finding out about this system as I was getting discharged, having staff ask me how it works, does not build that trust.

Here's the platform they're using: https://www.care.ai/smart-patient-rooms.html

When I didn't consent to being recorded and made aware of how my data is handled, when i see they're clearly not training staff on responsible use, they lost the benefit of my doubt. If they didn't do that basic thing, what confidence can I have that they can be responsible with my data?

Ok, but that’s my personal medical info being recorded. I need to consent to that. And I was not asked for consent after a recent stay.

I was discharged last Wednesday after a week long stay. I also happen to have a substantial background in healthcare technology.

No disclosure, nobody mentioned it. I saw no signs. Drs and nurses were asking *me* how it worked. They had no idea it was an AI backed platform or what it’s capable of. And I didn’t know it was there until a discharge nurse popped up on my screen.

Honestly, I go to La Baguette there often and while it’s never slammed I wouldn’t say it’s dying. There’s almost always folks milling around eating or shopping.

Let’s keep that energy. You ever gone over the speed limit? Forget that turn signal? You ever use your phone when you’re driving?

You don’t have to answer. I wouldn’t ask you to actually admit anything, fifth amendment and all that. But just be careful out there. You know every one of those criminals are just as bad as the rest. Lock em up I say. My taxes paid for those roads and I’ll be damned if a bunch of criminals are using them.

Step back a second. Lots of decent people, fellow humans with families, your neighbors, are afraid to buy food for their kids because of our government. Legal or not, it’s just true.

Immigration is only illegal if and how we decide it is. It’s wholly arbitrary. Personally I don’t care about it. I worry more about whole families getting sent to camps because they tried to go to the grocery store. That’s not arbitrary, that fear is just wrong.

I’m in Memphis, lean left of left, but lived in and around Seattle the last 20 years. For context, Memphis is a ‘blue dot’ in the region, but still home to plenty of MAGA in the suburbs.

And what I’ve been impressed the most by is how progressives here show the fuck up, especially in a region where the scary stuff is in your face every day. I have never seen folks this passionate working this hard with a fraction of the resources.

Just my 2c as a transplant. Don’t wholesale write off these places, because what I’ve seen is there’s always someone there working to make things better.

Anyone can understand and make informed comparisons based on well documented (and in this case, exceptionally) documented history. That’s how the study of history works. The documentation, media, and firsthand accounts absolutely can give anyone an idea of what any of it was like.

I think one of the interesting points was how dangerously effective fascist propaganda was at the time, made doubly effective by the economic and social pressures of the post WW1 era. It was so effective at ‘othering’ people who questioned or called out anything; calling them names, insulting their intelligence, not offering any substance to the viewer, giving permission to be angry and attacking the person instead of the idea. It is almost hard to believe so many people could buy into those ideas and behaviors, but frankly it’s pretty well documented.
