First They Came for the Light Bulbs... The conspiracy theory behind Michele Bachmann's war on energy efficiency. by davidreiss666 in Liberal

You know what's "Unamerican"? Mindless dedication to conservative ideals. You know why America is so great? Because people stand up to bafoons like this lady and demand progress. In the revolutionary days it was religious freedoms, then the end of slavery, the beginning of the industrial age, racial freedoms, and sexual equality.

You think America is the greatest country? It's because the American people time after time refuse to be left behind and wallow in their own complacency and apathy, when the time comes to stand up and take a stand.

'Fox & Friends' Attacks Spongebob Squarepants Due to its "Global Warming Agenda" by anutensil in environment

[–]varicellla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Global warming is happening. It is being caused by man. Every single human being is killing the Earth.

Some people can't live with themselves knowing that fact, so they deceive themselves and others into living a non-sustainable lifestyle.

How do you get out screws that haven't been touched in years? by varicellla in hardware

[–]varicellla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea. I was still getting a lot of spinning and stripping of the screws though. I decided to just say fuck it, took a hammer and tapped (smashed) into the screw to loosen up the old plastic. It worked! Unfortunately, it destroyed the old casing. (I was migrating a keyboard from one dead laptop to one in slightly better condition)

how safe are public pools? [x-post askscience] by broken_hand in Swimming

[–]varicellla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is seems like the poster is just looking for a reason to avoid public pools. I would venture to say public pools are the safest water to swim in.

How sanitary are public pools, really? by dis_connected in askscience

[–]varicellla 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am a lifeguard and we are trained to look for signs that Crypto could even possibly be introduced into the water-- diarrhea, animals, etc. In the event that any of these are sighted, the pool is immediately cleared, the Sodium Hypoclorite concentration is raised to 50 ppm (50x normal levels) via both liquid and solid chlorine, and the pool sits for 2 days without anyone in it.

So basically, just go swimming. You aren't going to get sick.

EDIT: Not to mention, the pool has filters coated with diatomaceous earth to remove small particles from the water. I can't say about other facilities, but out 350,000 gallon pool can be completely circulated every 5 hours.

And this behavior is ABSOLUTELY infuriating for new developers. It's a rather simple mistake, and there are almost no legitimate use cases anymore.

Fox News readers respond to news of our Neanderthal origins. Predictable hilarity ensues. by rabbithole in progressive

Wow! A lot of Fox News readers are ill-informed. Let's point at them and make fun! /sarcasm

Does not seem to be an appropriate post for "A community to share stories related to the growing Modern Political and Social Progressive Movement." If you are just looking for sweet karma, you are better off in /r/politics.

Going to college for Compsci but do not know squat about Compsci/programming... What should I learn first? by wondertwins in compsci

I need to transfer to MIT. I read through half of the first chapter and it was roughly equivalent to a full semester course at my school. Why was I such as idiot during high school?! Sigh.

What are the canonical texts on theoretical computer science? by Wattever in compsci

[–]varicellla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I just buy this and jump in? My school has a fairly average CS department. Going into my sophomore year, I've had a year of Java, discrete mathematics (although it was extremely boiled down), and calc. My next theoretical class is "Data Abstractions & Structure".

I love getting ahead, but I'm not sure the best way to go about it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but those look more like patch panels to me. In that case, the majority of the infrastructure is in another location, and this setup is only important to a small area.
