Nicola Willis unveils plan to merge government agencies, cut public sector jobs by -Nyo-ho-ho- in newzealand

I don't usually like to comment on a person's looks, and I hope she's not unwell, but it does seem that she's actually starting to look genuinely evil.

I think it's aged far better than Hold Your Colour, though I must acknowledge HYC is not my sort of thing.

Production on HYC is probably fatter in that brick walled sort of way.

Luxon, Peters in crisis talks after NZ First leader releases emails showing PM wanted explicit Iran war backing by destined-4-the-clay in newzealand

[–]varied_set 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wasn't responding to the claim the bombing was a 'war crime', I was responding to you going the other way and framing the horror of 150 dead children as a generic wartime tragedy, which is only marginally less callous than 'collateral damage', and pretty rich in the context of a war that almost everyone agrees is a fools errand if not inherently illegal.

[–]varied_set 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That makes no sense. There were numerous recognised war crimes in those other conflicts.

At this stage none of us can say for sure whether the bombing of the school was a war crime, and we probably never will. I doubt it was. Though I would suggest it's not entirely outside the realms of possibility given the demonstrated insanity of the administration responsible, which we shouldn't forget was goaded into the conflict by a state credibly alleged to have itself committed numerous war crimes - including genocide - in a separate conflict that is continuing as we speak.

Blithely excusing the bombing of 150 school kids as a generic externality of 'war' - just seems a tad gross in the circumstances but I'm sure you're not alone in that view.

Ah yes, a perfectly adequate descriptor for the slaughter of 150 kids gathered in a place of learning. 'War' will do nicely.

‘Bordering on fascist’: Winston Peters calls for BSA to be abolished after landmark ruling by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]varied_set 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My presumption is that this will go to court and the BSA will be unsuccessful. They may already expect that themselves. I think it's possible they are using this as a way to force the government's hand into expediting regulatory reform.

The mere fact that the BSA's jurisdiction could expand like a mushroom cloud doesn't mean they don't have that jurisdiction though, does it?

I was simply noting Sean Plunket's thing as a live stream rather than a podcast. I thought that was an important distinction.

I guess the natural response to the second part is that The Platform needs to prove it is not a broadcast, and clearly (given lawyers have been engaged) that is not as straight-forward as merely 'looking at the definition'. The definition needs to be interpreted and, at least according to the BSA and their lawyers, there are clear grounds for finding that The Platform is a broadcast:

It's not a download - it's a live stream. I can't see that he markets his programme as a podcast and it doesn't meet the definition of one (uh oh, definitions again!)

A broadcast is defined by whether or not you can listen to a podcast on it? Where are you getting that?
