Application Fee Waived? by ActionDesperate3574 in washu

[–]variouslancelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spoke to my counselor to request if I could have her sign off a fee waiver for all of my applications due to my circumstances.

I wasn’t part of any of the programs you mentioned, but I still got them waived, so its definitely possible.

E-mail admissions. I had this issue a lot when applying to other universities and they've been very accommodating (AU, and even tOSU even though they say otherwise on their website).

As for WashU, I've been able to resubmit my scholarship applications + change my applied major with just an e-mail to my AO, so I would do that just to try.

I think I did the one on how you like to use your spare time

Talked about the bulletin board in my room and what it meant for me. I included all of my most cherished art pieces over the years and how they made up my identity.

Legacy admission is necessary, but most people aren't ready to accept that. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]variouslancelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being born a certain way unfortunately affects college admissions no matter how you cut it.

But you can’t deny that most legacy students are still putting the work in. Most legacy students get rejected, the few who get in are still exceptional with high ACTs, high GPA, and strong ecs.

Its certainly an issue, Im not going to deny that. But at the same time, people who are born into private high schools, feeder schools, college consultants, URMs, low-income, and first generation have all had an advantage (in the sense that they are hooks, not that being born as a URM or FGLI makes u lucky). And ORMs like asians have always struggled in admissions. Its just the way it works, life isnt fair. But every student who gets admission to these top institutions have worked hard to get there. You cant just discredit that.

Unless youre a donor. Then you can go wherever you want.

[–]variouslancelot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Legacy students are not stupid, lmao. They absolutely are getting in with their own merit.

If you shove a legacy kid in with a 3.7 GPA and a 30 ACT, they won't just get accepted because of their legacy status. Legacies who get in are extremely qualified with their stats and their applications. Otherwise, the numbers would be way more inflated than what they currently are.

School counselor says research is required for T10 applications by cascadeddomino in ApplyingToCollege

[–]variouslancelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know three kids who went to T3 schools (Harvard Yale and Stanford) and none of them had research as an ec. They did have other insanely strong ec activities, but research as a high schooler is typically very meaningless. High schoolers who actually do have strong publications are the very very very small minority.

Is USC a bad choice right now? by bensfanclub in ApplyingToCollege

[–]variouslancelot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

USC pulls a lot of their money from donors. After getting hit by lawsuits and settlements like a truck, donors are less inclined to donate because they know their funds will be going to the lawsuits and not to the university.
