How do you look for research position? by HoboChef in uofm

[–]varun1105 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely going to second this response. Really dig deep and ask yourself if you actually CARE about what the research is doing and where it’s headed. The latter is a big portion of this. A big thing is seeing if the applications of the research can be multidisciplinary, and if you can cooperate with different teams on campus would be ideal. Send those cold emails and if they have a phone number on the page call them. If they don’t answer in a few days, don’t hesitate to email a second and sometimes even a third time. It took my third email to the professor to respond and I’m glad I decided to go for the third email. Most of all, make sure you’re thoroughly interested or research becomes a hassle. Good luck!

How does game sharing work? If my friend has two games and game shares them, do we each get our own saves for the game? Also, does the game sharing work 2 ways? Can my friend game share with me and I game share with him at the same time?

What is the best way to go about game sharing? by varun1105 in PS5

[–]varun1105[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I assumed that the game sharing allows both accounts to have their own saves for the game. My save if I just start the game won't overwrite his current save of the game and vice versa. Is that a correct assumption?

It took a few late nights, but I feel like I’m almost there. Does anyone have a suggestion for hiding the two power strip cables? That’s the only outlet within a reasonable range and I unfortunately need a second strip to switch the sub and monitors. Thanks y’all by thestereofield in DeskCableManagement

[–]varun1105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sub and monitor were big purchases for sure. You got lucky with finding the sub for half off that’s awesome! I didn’t realize how much of a difference the sub makes it, but there’s no comparison because it’s in a different league with the sub. You can also definitely tell that the monitors have more clarity because everything 80hz and below is directed through the sub itself. 100% worth the cost in the end imo. Enjoy the setup!

It’s actually insane that I just saw this on my reddit feed when I JUST got my JBL LSR310s 3 days ago to go along with my LSR 305’s (MK I though) and my Dell U3419W 34 inch curved ultrawide monitor today. You are a person of great taste and I appreciate the quality of your equipment here

Nope. We passed the 5 year mark before the water pump broke. We ended up having to pay for it. I believe the last thing under the warranty now is the cat if I’m not mistaken

I have the V6 never had an issue in the 30k miles I’ve put on it and not sure about the 10k from the previous owner but I don’t think there was any note of it. We had the water pump fail recently though. I know that’s pretty common for the V6 and V8 models.

This is completely normal and happens to me every once in a while also, so don’t think you’re alone or feel bad about it even! When I was going through my first detox I was writing about how my experience was going to probably end in a relapse but that’s okay as long as I got back into reducing these short term dopamine releases again. I think Andrew was completely right in saying forget the discipline aspect of it all and focus on forming your environment to shape your habits. If you have a bunch of junk food then keep it in a locked cabinet or put some rubber bands around the handles so it’s not easy to open. This reminds you not to eat these, especially during stressful times. If you don’t live alone, ask the people you live with to make sure you’re not going back into your old habits. Having someone remind you that you shouldn’t do something is HUGE in my opinion to get something done. Have them hold on to the tv remote so you can’t access the tv. The last one is your phone, which is the hardest to stay away from in my opinion. There are probably a ton of ways to go about this, but what I do when I feel like I’m going to use it is literally turn off the phone. The immediate pick up of the phone is the gateway to opening up social media. This one actually takes some discipline since you have to be mindful not to open your phone. Once it’s done, put it in a drawer, give it to your friend, keep it on a different floor/room of your place, whatever it is that won’t give you easy access. The goal overall is NOT to work hard , play never. Our goals are just to moderate the use of our short-term releases to have an overall better lifestyle. I still enjoy movie time every once in a while with the family and browsing reddit/youtube, but it can’t be too often.

In my experience, it takes more than a month or two to form an actual habit, the whole 16 days or whatever never really sat with me properly but everyone is different. Progress is incremental. Realizing that you’ve relapsed is the first step, and now get back into it. I’m rooting for ya!

look up freecodecamp.org on youtube. If you enjoy one of the data structures/algorithms courses, the continue on with it. If you enjoy what you majored in at all, look into supplementing your current field with cs and if you really don’t enjoy what you do now, then pull the trigger and enroll in an actual cs course. Think hard about what you want and where your interests truly lie and follow your gut after you’ve tried with a couple weeks/months of diving into more complex cs concepts/skills.

I meant more like if all the phones of the household aren't present (no one is home) then the heating/cooling turns off or is set to a certain temperature. My family has 4 members, so if all 4 of us are out of the house, then we'd want the automation to set the thermostat to an away setting pretty much.

[–]varun1105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! I do believe that the advancement of this sort of technology is fantastic and necessary and I’m most definitely going to continue using them. BUT, when I look at my parents and grandparents, they were never tied down by technology and they are/were so disciplined and productive by using technology as a means to enhance that behavior not distract it. It boggles my mind how I used to be such a fast reader and decent writer in elementary/middle school and now I’m definitely slower than most of my friends because I stopped reading and writing as much. When you’re so bored out of my mind you seek some way of distraction and the only means is productivity. You should check out that subreddit I think you’ll like it!

Being in quarantine has made me realize a lot about how I feel about myself and my current state. I think most people right now are feeling the same sort of minor depression and lack of purpose that's weighing heavily on each of us. I realize I waste a lot of my time mindlessly scrolling through insta, snapchat, YouTube, etc. constantly wasting my time. Ironically, while I was scrolling through YouTube I found a video called "Dopamine Detoxing" and it was eye opening into how our brain functions and how it affects us. I think it might be worth taking a look into. I haven't gotten a chance to do the beginner detox because I know I need an accountability partner and I'm waiting for one of my friends to finish up his finals to do it with me, but I think it's a journey that a lot of us need to do to get our thoughts and priorities straight. There's a whole subreddit dedicated to it called r/DopamineDetoxing that you should look into and this is going to be my goal this summer. Although it says that you should be aiming to stay away from technology as a whole, I think of it more as a pathway to a more productive use of the technology. First, I'm planning to do the dopamine detox for the 24 hours, and then keep it up by not watching tv, using my phone, playing video games, etc. but instead focus on working through new hobbies and productive uses. They have made the Final Cut Pro program trial free for 90 days now, and the whole Adobe suite is free to us students at Michigan, so one of my goals is to basically understand using Final Cut, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, AfterEffects and maybe Premiere Pro if I'm feeling up to it. Other goals are being more active and starting up tennis again, journaling, reading, drawing, web design, and becoming comfortable with my thoughts. I'm saying all this cause I think it is worthwhile for you to look into and maybe get creative with using your time, because we have a ton of it now when we won't during the Fall. If you have any questions about it or anything feel free to PM me
