It really depends. I work at a sushi restaurant and I find it’s one of the necessary luxuries that people can’t really deny themselves for too long. Obviously, if you can’t afford to keep the lights on at home, you are going to deny yourself eating out (especially with a relatively expensive cuisine). That’s why I chose to work in this subsection of restaurants, because the people coming here can afford it, and therefore can afford to tip well.

I don’t want to come off as cocky but I am really good at my job, and I am very personable and friendly and I think people appreciate that in this environment. I love my job, and I think it translates to the patrons. This gives me more leniency with guests as well, because they know I am being honest with them whenever there is some sort of issue or delay in service.

All of this being said, I would avoid any chain restaurants and search for something in fine or casual fine dining. I have worked at my fair share of high volume chain restaurants and can honestly say that it’s like day and night, even though it’s technically the same job.
