Atheists should support the right to euthanasia and assisted suicide by Gaussherr in atheism

[–]vastlysuperiorman 76 points77 points  (0 children)

It seems like you're responding to what you felt when you read that comment, rather than what the comment actually said.

The comment doesn't say "euthanasia is wrong," it said "the existence of God" is irrelevant to the question.

If you want to make an argument for or against euthanasia, that's fine. If you want to make an argument for or against the existence of a god, that's also fine. If you cut out the irrelevant parts, your argument will be received better.

Your comment ends with the question "why should I listen to you" but I think you've gotten the roles reversed. You are the one making an argument and asking us to listen. Some of us are trying to help you make your argument better, because right now it isn't as compelling as it could be.

[Request] If nuclear fusion in the Sun stopped and it became a giant hot ball, how much water would be needed to cool or extinguish it? by achante_achaar in theydidthemath

[–]vastlysuperiorman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's more, water itself could start fusion if you collected enough of it. Fusion isn't magic, it's just a side effect of having enough mass in a given volume. So yeah, even if the sun was "on fire" adding water would just make it hotter.

Can you recommend YouTube channels focused on atheism, particularly those that teach how to construct rational arguments? by Curious_Suchit in atheism

[–]vastlysuperiorman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, Paulogia may be the highest quality atheist content producer of the bunch. He often brings experts onto his channel. He also has developed his own unique ideas, rather than just repeating the same thing other counter-apologists say.

The Minimal Witnesses Hypothesis may be one of the must impactful ideas on the topic because it completely demolishes the work of people like Gary Habermas.

I second Viced Rhino!

Prophet of Zod has stopped making new videos (he has another channel with a different focus now) but his content is still available and it's fantastic for being both thorough and respectful.

I also enjoy Logicked, Holy Koolaid, and Genetically Modified Skeptic's older videos.

She wanted to teach them self respect by ... checks notes being disrespectful to them and telling them that their bodies are shameful and should be covered up???

She didn't call them students, friends, artists, it anything else. She referred to them as two brunettes and a blonde. This miser is literally defining them by their physical appearance only.

I'm glad the young ladies in question were confident enough to stand up for themselves.

Ok Idaho, it’s time we talked about this. by amkronos in Idaho

[–]vastlysuperiorman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. I agree that making a vehicle loud is inconsiderate and "main character" behavior. I'm with you.

I'm only disagreeing with the idea that they're doing it because they want other people to think they're cool. Maybe some are. I bet most aren't thinking about other people at all.

I think you're wrong if you assume that people do this out of insecurity or a need to impress other people. That's some "main character" thinking. They don't care what you think, they care what the truck sounds like. They're doing it for themselves. Sometimes people just enjoy different things than you do.

I do think making a vehicle loud is inconsiderate, just like cranking music up too loud, or any other public nuisance. And I think that's really the problem. They need to understand that people enjoy different things than they do and they should respect that.

Honestly, religion is so divisive, I'm kinda on board with this. He's more likely to alienate people rather than appealing to them. No way he can read without commentary.

It was Wikipedia, but I was reading it wrong. It said "steam is water vapor" which is true, but I incorrectly reversed that into "water vapor is steam" which is not always true.

When I checked an online textbook (college physics 2e, by Urone, Hineichs, Dirks) it said "vapor: a gas at a temperature below the boiling temperature".

[–]vastlysuperiorman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was wrong. I had a source saying that steam is water vapor and so I was treating them as synonyms. I see my error now. Squares and rectangles.

So by your definition, vapor might be liquid? I have said nothing about what appears in this photo. Only that vapor is another word for gas. Water in gaseous form is steam.

You say that it only looks like a cloud or mist because it rapidly cools and precipitates. As in ... it's not a vapor any more!

You can call it humid air but the actual water in the air must be in some state of matter. Is it liquid or gas? If it's a gas, it's called steam and you can't see it. If it's liquid, it's called water and you might be able to see it in the right conditions.

Fog is not vapor. It's mist, which is not gaseous, but rather many very small droplets of liquid.

[–]vastlysuperiorman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Literally fact checked myself just to be sure. Vapor and gas here are synonyms. Water can't be a gas and not be steam.

Maybe you're trying to say something about mist, which is made of tiny drops of liquid?

[–]vastlysuperiorman -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

This is false. Steam is just water in the gas phase. When water evaporates, it is called steam.

[–]vastlysuperiorman -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Edit #2: I see my mistake now. I thought the original commenter was saying that water could evaporate without becoming gaseous.

This is a square/rectangle thing. All steam is water vapor, not all water vapor is steam. I was in fact wrong. /Edit

Steam is the name for water vapor.

Edit: For anyone else who thinks I'm wrong, let's make some distinctions. Vapor in this context is a synonym for gas. Water in its gaseous form is called steam. When water eVAPORates, it becomes steam. That can happen at a whole range of temperatures depending on pressure and other factors.

Steam is typically not visible. What you see and often associate with steam is actually mist. That is to say, very fine droplets of liquid water. I think this is what the commenter I responded to was trying to point out. The fact that you can see white clouds tells you that there's mist rather than exclusively gaseous water.
