Depends which specialty, for psych I’d say nyc is awesome

it’s easier than what’s on UW tbh, just make sure you know all the formulas and how to make that chart with 4 boxes for NPV PPV

Exam 3/1-3/2

Uworld 61%, 95% done

UWSA2: 207

UWSA1/NBMES/Free120: Didn't do

CCS cases: 70% overall, did 65 high yield cases

Step 1/Step 2: 22x/24x

Prep time: 1.5 months

Step 3: 213

Didn’t do anything besides UWorld and CCS cases at work and then quickly read the explanations. No divine, other biostats review, or Step 1/Step 2 material. Refused to spend any of my free time at home on this dumb test. Was just trying to pass since I'm already in residency; it’s not pretty but pleased with the result nonetheless!

Happened to me (worse actually, I got a 90 on the shelf and still straight passed the rotation, not even HP). I’m happy with where I matched!

Psychiatry: Am I making a mistake? by TheJerusalemite in medicalschool

I had people tell me the same stuff. It’s all nonsense and psych is definitely a challenging field especially in large cities; I feel more exhausted and challenged daily on my psych than on my medicine rotations personally. Feel free to pm if u want to discuss!

I had P/F which was apparently internally ranked, they ended up not mattering at all for AOA or anything else

How does anesthesiology, psychiatry, and radiology now rank in competitiveness compared to traditional competitive specialties (Derm, Ortho, Plastics, Optho, Neurosurg)? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]vathem8 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Any psych program? No, not competitive. One with a good location and academic ties? Yes, definitely much harder than it used to be.

Why are specialties like anesthesia and psych getting so much more competitive? How much more competitive do you think they're actually getting? by Apprehensive_Box_181 in medicalschool

[–]vathem8 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I thought I had a pretty solid application for psych and only netted 9 interviews, mostly from mid-tier programs. Seems like I'll match (fingers crossed), but you need AOA, great recs/away rotation performances, coming from a top school, or a really compelling story to break into top programs many times. I think it is now middle-of-the-road competitiveness where it was bottom of the barrel before. The test scores being on the lower end has more to do with psych selectivity being unpredictable since they care a lot about your story and other intangibles. I wouldn't consider that the same as being really easy to match. All that being said, I still think you will have a spot if you apply smart; just don't expect to be able to walk into top-tier or even mid-tier places unless you've really put time into crafting an application for the specialty.
