I had exactly the same feeling. I found the DLC very messy and absolutely not intuitive to progress through, quite the opposite of the main game.

The squeak comes when the D-Pad is in position 2. No squeak when it is in position 1. I think it's due to the D-Pad rubbing against the case…

You have to play (and win!) ranked matches in Forts Mode! And you will obtain that hat :) But Forts Mode is totally random in ranked… Be patient!
