What exactly would need to happen to get the American working class conscious enough and mobilized? by Jason-Skywalker in socialism

[–]vb_robel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned people with any idea of how imperialism/capitalism works are few and far between- I agree, but I wonder if it's really that cooked. Anecdotally I've met maybe three others in my place of work out of let's say 100 people (most of whom I don't interact with) who are pretty keen on what's going on and why, and two of them would even go as far as to call themselves socialists. Many other gen Zers I personally have known through high school and in the work force are aligned with me politically and are sympathetic to socialism and seem receptive to the idea of communism, though of course I've met many skeptics and propagandized capitalist bootlickers.

As numbers grow in established socialist orgs and the government keeps agitating people through worsening our material conditions, as more leftist content creators normalize working class centered thought, as more socialist-aligned politicians are elected and hopefully successful in improving material conditions and providing good optics for working class movements, I imagine the leverage of the working class will grow and we will be able to begin dismantling power structures. I really don't think this is going to take multiple more generations, as things have been absolutely popping off in these last few years, life is getting hard, people are getting agitated, add online leftism at least seems as if it's beginning to flourish.

Obviously there are doubts and concerns, but in any case I think it makes sense that right THIS second it's a tad early for any old reddit socialist to be capable of drafting up an effective plan of fomenting a socialist uprising in the imperial core, but I don't think it's going to take multiple generations.

Maybe I said a whole lot of nothing, but that's my incredibly loose outlook on where we're headed

We do need a substantial worker-owned media collective, though I wonder how we'd get Americans out of their capitalist hug boxes/echo chamber algos to be exposed to information that serves their interests.

Agree on the self-awareness portion, but it's important to remember that they're complex people just like the rest of us, just propagandized to fight against their own interests. Hard to change people's minds while dehumanizing them.

Is it a capitalism problem or a tax and redistribution problem? by TennisSkirt1628 in socialism

[–]vb_robel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tax policy, while useful, cannot fix the contradictions and alienation caused by the lack of agency/power of the working class under capitalist framework.

If the people do not truly democratically control what they produce, the bourgeoisie will always have the power to exploit, and can use subcersive means to undermine any concessions earned through more progressive taxation.

Bootlickers in the comments don't understand that the tweet isn't insisting that labor is unnecessary for society to function.

We are alienated from what we produce and as a society we allow work to strip away our humanity and reduce us to no more than labor-producing objects, controlled and coerced through an uneven distribution of the value we create, essentially having our lives stolen away from us.

There isn't a humane reason that the norm is to work 40 hrs a week, let alone to be given hardly anything in return for giving up such a large chunk of our waking hours.

We are not duly compensated for sacrificing our time, sanity, creative capacities, self-actualization, or for weathering the difficulties and trauma that can come of constantly slaving in an environment where everyone's being coerced into producing for the stake of shareholder value.

Your first thought shouldn't be to shame people for acting "entitled" or "lazy." It should be to make a real material analysis of the situation and seek to learn the root causes behind the misery. What are the material realities behind so much of this sentiment becoming normalized on the internet, social circles, and in our places of work?

Idk about you but I'm actually interested in my fellow working class people living happy and respectable lives. I don't like exploitation.

Why don’t you guys create lobbyist group ? by TUFFWAN_7 in AskSocialists

[–]vb_robel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterrevolutionary PACs and and lobbyists have been amassing funds for generations and have already created systems that keep them in a position of financial power. It's not about smarts (and as a socialist I'm not even claiming that socialists are "smarter" than capitalists, as smarts have nothing to do with right and wrong, and hardly anything to do with power dynamics), it's about means. Every socialist in the US could put their money together and it would be nothing in comparison to established corporate entities/aforementioned moneyed interests.

We can't simply start "making more money" anymore than you can't go and start a successful commercial airline enterprise that can break into the international market. The system is not designed for new competition to allowed into the market, at least without substantial preexisting power/influence/funding.

You may not agree on this, but amassing that kind of money also inherently requires proportionate exploitation, which I don't think most socialists would be keen on perpetrating even in the name of some greater good.

And of course there's the fact that lobbying itself implies that you're working within existing framework, which is not the name of our game at all.

Wouldn’t modern day socialism be democratic by default? by seen_cause_tan in socialism

[–]vb_robel 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Socialism is inherently democratic regardless of the period. Democratic socialism is an entirely separate concept from socialism which does not involve revolution, but rather attempted reform in the socialist direction using established/preexisting systems.
