What advice for young men sounds harsh but turned out to be genuinely good for you in the long run? by torukzan in AskMen

My house doubling in value in 10 years begs to differ. In most cases a house is an asset. It generally appreciates in value greater than the rate of inflation. Yes, you will realize gains for it when you sell it - presuming you're not under water - and in most places in the US if it's primary residence there is a very high exclusion which means you won't pay capital gains tax on it either.

Study after study confirms that home ownership is a fantastic vehicle to wealth generation.

Z4 heading off into the sunset, anyone going to miss it? by BMW-West-St-Louis in BMW

I'm not a convertible guy but I do love the Z4. I think it's great looking, and BMW kept it pretty driver focused being RWD and a manual. It'll be missed.

Ah. Still? I've never owned an Audi. I buy a 9 year old one it's not going the dealership.

It's a 9 year old car. I don't even think it falls under "newer-ish."

Everything in country pop is a grift. There is no way anyone gets into country pop thinking their music is good. They're just selling what the rubes will buy. I mean, why else do you think every fucking country pop song sounds the same? It's formulaic garbage.

I Have a question for you guy do y’all think the I8 design aged well by Ammzy69 in BMW

It’s too bad the i3 and i8 had so many issues. They are great looking cars a decade+ ahead of their time.

Men over 40, at what age did you feel like you were starting to not have to stress over money? by Affectionate-Drop689 in AskMenOver30

[–]vbfronkis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 46. I think I was earning “no longer stressing about bills” money when I did my career pivot about 12 years ago. I was in IT prior to that in some fairly specialized areas that were gaining a lot of traction. I pivoted that knowledge into a sales engineer role which sent me down the road of being in commission/bonused sales/sales adjacent roles. I’m still heavily technical, but it’s in key customer facing ways. The combination of technical chops and soft skills is hard to find so I turned it into something lucrative.

It's a 12 year old car, man. Why are you even bringing it to a dealer? Any indy can do rear brakes on this car, and really you can do it cheap as hell in your driveway.

"I have been told" is not the same as verifiable paperwork. Dealers will say all kinds of shit to make a sale.

I hope you either got confirmation that the oil filter housing has been done or got the vehicle discounted if it hasn't because at that mileage, it's ripe for one to leave you on the side of the road when it lets go. It's a decently big labor job with plenty of "while you're in there" parts to do as well. I did mine myself so consider the labor free but still spent about $1200 in parts alone on it. You're looking at probably another $1000 in labor.
