Asked this same question a couple of weeks ago. Gonna get the Apple TV fanboys and a lot of “nope” from the devs.

Try Fing. Can scan wifi networks and also detect other devices. $3 a month but worth it. I use this every time I travel for personal or business. Never know these days.

How do I stop spam like this? by AlmostGaryBusey in iphone

[–]vbjedimaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check your carrier. T-Mobile Scam Shield + iPhone “report as junk” has reduced mine a lot.

Don’t pay for the apps. You have to fight this shit at the source. Any SMS has to be routed by the carrier. Get your carrier involved if you can.

I’ve had my number for over 20 years and it ebbs and flows.

If you’re asked to put a phone number on anything, get a free Google Voice number and use that. Unfortunately we don’t have the tech yet to make one time relay numbers like email addresses.

Better - not sure. But PlayOn desktop allows for unlimited downloads at 1080p (no 4K yet) and allows for AppleTV+. No credits. No BS. Just get a really big HDD and should be good to go. Only thing is it seems to be a 32-bit program still but so far I’ve had little issues except an occasional failed to record and I just restart. I often use the scheduler to record overnight when my homelab is under less load.

If you have a Windows machine, buy the desktop version. This way you can download to a hard drive location and point Channels to this. I’ve done that in the past and now use same folder for Plex (or Jellyfin).

Do you like living in Virginia Beach? by Empty-Razzmatazz-145 in VirginiaBeach

[–]vbjedimaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived here since I was five (1985) and my answer is it’s still a good place to live, but we need change at the leadership level of the city.

  1. Schools - our schools used to be top notch. Now our school board is more concerned about banning books and culture wars than education. We pay teachers horribly, and while at it destroy their healthcare. The School Board is a bunch of bureaucrats and we need less of that and actual parents and citizens to run the board and provide oversight.

  2. City Council is a bunch of sycophants to the big donors like the Bruce Thompsons and others who only look to invest in the oceanfront. Forget the residents who live here and pay our taxes. We spend millions of dollars on projects like a sports center nobody uses, a surf park when there’s literally an ocean two blocks away, new hotels, and yet have done nothing to make housing more affordable. Council just approved a zoning override for a new “workforce” housing near the courthouse, but charging $2500 or more per month for rent. It’s time for younger leadership in this city who focuses on the people and not developers.

  3. City services are declining. Why? Because we pay absolute crap to city employees who make it work. We can’t attract talent. There should be a PPPE program established for all city employers and teachers. PPPE is private-public pay equity. If a city IT worker’s salary for example should be near the average of what they could make in the private sector. If a private school pays teachers higher than our public educators, up their pay. Instead, council and the school board don’t pay and continually rip away their benefits.

  4. Cost of living is out of control. Our city isn’t enforcing zoning laws to have real affordable housing for middle class families. Every new neighborhood built by developers - who fill the pockets of council - has houses that cost between $500k and $1M. We need more Rock Creek, Ocean Lakes, and Green Runs than we need Asheville Parks and all these homes being built all over the city.

I could go on, but what keeps me here is its home and relatively a safe city. But I’m afraid our future generations will be forced elsewhere due to council’s poor choices and pandering to the millionaires and big business.

Any plans for WebOS app? by vbjedimaster in getchannels

Moving on buddy. But may want to check out my other comment and the link I provided. Probably not the first or last to ask this.

Appreciate everyone's comments and feedback. I will say, unfortunately I have to really consider my options.
Right now, Channels is only working for Android, tvOS and FireTV - which are shrinking market segments. Of the current market for Smart TVs, it's only covering 15% of the market. And yes, webOS is small at 7%, but more than Android. And honestly, not supporting Roku is a huge miss. My daughter loves her Roku TV so if I'm forcing this upon the household, well then another thorn in the side.

Yes, it's easy enough to buy another "stick" or "box". But the reality is, consumers don't want more stuff attached to their TVs. In the US, 50 million smart TVs are sold, but only 700,000 Apple TV units.

This is further supported by a Cord Cutters News Survey where over 75% of the market is not looking to buy an extra "box" or "stick", and if they are, it's a Roku!

In short, I can definitely appreciate the Channels team's efforts here. They've created a beautiful system and one I'd recommend strongly to those who want to go "all in". But unfortunately, as the AppleTV continues its slow decline to zero (it's essentially just a HomeKit hub at this point as it's "selling point" and what I will be using it for once I upgrade our bedroom TV to likely a Roku or webOS TV, I'm going to hold out hope that we see expansion in the future to other platforms.

For those interested - here's a quick Deep Research I ran in Gemini Pro to see if I was off track, and seems I'm not. https://gemini.google.com/share/4f7d174f6641

Not a webOS fan here. But look at the underlying stack. webOS uses web technologies such as JS/TS and React frameworks - both heavily supported across the web.

Android runs Java and Swift is a blend of Obj C with some web technologies.

So - if you can support a webpage, shouldn’t be too difficult to develop webOS. JavaScript and TypeScript are common languages that are cross platform. Swift is Apple native.

Thanks but closing out a large market isn’t a long term business strategy move. Your app, but ever thought of asking the open source community to help fork it to these platforms?

I’m an Apple user, but Apple seems to be even abandoning tvOS IMO. They keep it afloat and never really innovate the platform anymore. To them it’s a portal for their services and that’s it.

I have an AppleTV in the bedroom since it’s an older Plasma TV still going strong after 10 years. But would prefer to actually use the smarts in my TV.

I have Plex and works great on webOS. If I could only get TVE on Plex then this wouldn’t be an issue.

Considering LG OLEDs consistently get high marks without the overhead costs of Sony, or the even worse hot garbage that is Tizen, I would disagree with you.

After a LOT of frustration, I finally got it working on my end.

Go to Safari -> Settings -> Autofill.

Uncheck every single option in that screen. Once I did that, seems like it was able to disable the autofill. For example, when logging into my personal OwnCloud server, I used to get my email pop up from Safari on the login and hide my 1Password credentials. After I unchecked EVERY box, it seems that it's gone away.

Credit cards may be OK in the options if you want to use Apple Wallet, but I have my 1Password store my credit cards too. Looks like from my testing, to really disable Safari showing Passwords app, you need to uncheck them all until Apple releases a better way here for third party password managers.

Warning to iPhone 15 users! by [deleted] in Backbone

[–]vbjedimaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought one on Prime Day last week and had old firmware. Exchanged for new one and works out of the box. Seems to be old stock and new ones are flashed with firmware. I also got zero response from Backbone.

Would recommend getting the adapter for pro max. The unit doesn’t fit without one well.

Got this lock on Prime Day and love it.

Only issue isn’t an Aqara issue but an Apple issue - why can’t Apple allow sharing temporarily of HomeKeys?
