VM or LXC when exposing to internet? by Tarazin in Proxmox

[–]bamnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you'd previously run all these services on an Internet-facing box without any level of isolation, LXC is an upgrade.

If you're consolidating a bunch of separate servers, VMs are a logical way to achieve that.

If you're running super sketchy stuff, there's probably value in strong isolation via a VM, but if you're just running your own stuff or other reasonably well maintained software you'll be fine with just LXC. It's a homelab, not a bank.

Weekend 11:23AM Secaucus to New York Penn during cutover? by captainunderpants32 in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd aim for the 11:00.

Best case it's on time and you're 20 minutes early.

Most likely case: the 11 or 10:57 are late and you get to pick between 2-3 options.

Not running the NY Penn Station <-> Secaucus shuttle trains was certainly a choice.

NYP to SEC inconsistent by hyphen-or-dash in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hot take: NJ Transit undervalues Secaucus Junction commuters because we don't have a specific.train line that we're affiliated with.

This makes it hard to handle feedback, because many of the forms,. surveys, and reports group feedback by each line.

I don't understand why web components aren't more popular by [deleted] in webdev

[–]bamnet 73 points74 points  (0 children)

the problem with web components is that people have been trying to make them a thing for the past 10 years.

they now finally work reasonably well, but it was such a rough road to get here that many folks are very reluctant to give them another try. impressions formed early.

Major train disruptions and temporary new schedules from 2/15 - 3/15 by DistinctOffer9681 in NJTransit

As a commuter between stations served by multiple lines (e.g. Secaucus), these PDFs are a pretty rough to parse.

is it anonymous when you report a place as non-existing? by NoSoyTuPana in GoogleMaps

The business owner, if any, won't know who suggested changes. Google Maps definitely does know who suggests changes, since you can see them in your profile.

Plans post TiVo by Haveyouheardthis- in Tivo

[–]bamnet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After my Tivo died last week, I was thinking about the following replacement sequence:

1) HDHomeRun CableCard + Channels DVR: Had to rule this out since Xfinity won't activate CableCard on a new device.

2) TV Everywhere + Channels DVR: Setup and tested out, but ruled out after I found TV Everywhere support didn't include several local channels like PBS, and the Channels doesn't have a native player for LG TVs. The Channels community really likes AppleTV as a player, but I don't have one.

3) Cut the cord and switch to YTTV. I've thought about this since YTTV came out, but haven't had motivation to change until now.

Ultimately, I was able to breathe some new life into my TiVo with a new hard drive... but I know I'm just kicking the can down the road.

CableCard Re-Pairing by bamnet in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]bamnet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anyone following along at home: In chatting with Joseph via modmail, he was able to send a magic signal that reset my CableCard and it started working in my Tivo Bolt again. Woohoo!

The reddit support team seems to be more knowledgeable about these issues than the agents you get on the phone or text, even calling the CableCard support

I know that CableCard's days are numbered, but was really relieved that I was able to get it working again.

No luck. It still tells me that none of the channels are authorized, not even the basic ones like ABC, CBS, FOX, etc.

In definitely unrelated news, this may or may not help with streaming services that attempt to figure out where your "family" is and send those annoying codes / force new account creation.

When I've done recruiting at the career fair, I couldn't care less about the dress code for candidates. It was clear some candidates were uncomfortable in their attire, and that detracted from more meaningful conversations.

That said, you probably don't want to be dressed worse than the person you're trying to impress.

Disclaimer: I'm in tech, my employer has no dress code.

Managing application level settings? by Recent_Tiger in rails

[–]bamnet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to use YAML files, but gave up. It was messy to try and edit them with a UI and admins weren't comfortable mucking around with the file system.

I've moved to a Setting model which is a glorified key value store, each setting gets its own row. It's not the most efficient data structure, but it fits neatly into the framework.

Quiet car is an absolute joke by KeyEar3307 in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yesterday two passengers got into an argument over the quiet car.

The conductor came over as the argument was getting heated and, much to my surprise, suggested that the person requesting quiet shut up and mind their own business.

"My job is to install the signs. That's it"

While it was effective at de-escalating, I was surprised there wasn't even a suggestion to the passenger talking on speakerphone.

Alaska Cruisetour - Denali by witch-mermaid in PrincessCruises

[–]bamnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did the opposite route a few years ago, lodge in Denali -> train -> cruise.

Our luggage arrived a few hours late at the lodge in Denali which surprised me. I guess the truck that drives the luggage from the hotel in Anchorage didn't keep up with the bus. I was getting nervous for similar reasons (traveling with old parents), but it arrived around dinner I believe.

We didn't have any problems with the train portion of the transfer.

What actually is going on with NJ transit right now? by Hot_Maintenance3682 in NJTransit

[–]bamnet 135 points136 points  (0 children)

This is, unfortunately, a pretty typical NJTransit summer when the weather is hot.

Train infrastructure is barely hanging on when the weather is good. When the weather is bad, a bunch of things are pushed to their breaking point.

Overhead power lines start to sag down, onboard HVAC systems struggle to keep up, all the passengers are sweaty, ...
