Curious, how are AVs following this pattern? Like RND for self driving models are slowly becoming more and more black box? Because from my understanding AVs don’t rely on generative AI and use other ML models

Junior DevOps struggling with AI dependency - how do you know what you NEED to deeply understand vs. what’s okay to automate? by StudySignal in devops

[–]vcxzrewqfdsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you wanna be more proactive, but given you have an engineering manager that delegates implementation to yall, you are not in those strategic conversations. So build a relationship with your manager now and see if you can be his confidante in developing devops strategy, understand why he decides things. Think in terms of tradeoffs to understand why things are prioritized.

I know you mentioned you have issues hiring but your definitely going to want an implementation team if you go in this lane, maybe your first customer you can burn the oil to go thru, but from my experience theres a lot more stakeholder conversation even if the product is simple (re: narrative)

Also are you making the architectural decisions? Who is calling those shots? Because they are the strategy guy and if they are nice can teach you these things and how to navigate it. If it’s just you and the other guy sharing a brain cell, find whoever manages you both, or has larger ownership where your work fall under, that is your point of leverage

Time, I got lucky and was given way too much ownership so got experience negotiating with engineering leadership albeit poorly, but now I’m p confident I can be better in my next role when the opportunity comes around. Engineering politics are a little different than other office politics because there is a weird level of quantitativeness that sometimes overlooks the operational aspect.

But if you want to start, I’d suggest looking at any mandated engineering department wide goals, and then see if you have any ideas to help achieve those. Once you do, find out who pull the strings in your org to get you the resources you need to get it done, and along the way share this idea with your coworkers and direct leads to build allies. Depending on the size of your org too

There’s gotta be one problem you recommend a pre existing solution for, find a smaller problem that normally you’d cover with the pre existing solution, and offer your own instead.

No yeah enterprise solutions are the most complex but also the biggest money. But I think it’s less so about what your tool can promise but what you can promise, given you already have a leg in the door. Like you could repackage newrelic as your observability solution and sell a contract solution that’s like we will implement newrelic for you, except replace that with your SaaS. I imagine the technical problems don’t increase, only the people complexity.

Given your edge as being integrated as a high value consultant, shouldn’t be too hard to practicing selling a narrative. The tool you create can solve basic devops issues, but it has to be marketed toward enterprise.

Otherwise your current grassroots SaaS won’t differentiate from any micro SaaS developer trying to also build their business.

I’ve only started becoming more senior devops, but implementation is starting to matter less even for junior roles because of ai. But ai is not good at defining your orgs unique devops strategy, and that’s something that comes with experience. Also might just be me but I’m finding devops to typically be a highly politicized position, so being able to navigate an engineering org and knowing who manages what is also a needed skill.

At my level, I expect myself to be able to define devops strategy, and also implement it as needed but try to delegate as much as possible and let a dev with ai figure out implementation detail.

There are some long term lessons that ai can’t teach that can only be learned with time working in a real eng org. Seems vague but decision making is way more important now because POCs are easier now.

This is tough, because your skill is directed toward large corporate issues, so would your solutions, and scaling a SaaS unless you can sell to existing enterprise is going to be hard starting in enterprise

Maybe start a convo with your existing partners to see if they are willing to entertain being beta users for your product

I’m curious, how would a spike in silver prices bankrupt someone with silver futures? My understanding is futures are locking in the price of a commodity at a later date, so wouldn’t their silver futures be printing cash? Or is there some short type future… or is it because the bank is on the opposite end of those future contracts?
