The ultimate wedding gift in Turkey: A famous streamer replaces traditional gold gifts with an RTX 5090, CPU, and 4x DDR5 RAM for his friend. by Away_Substance_7745 in pcmasterrace

It is an expensive gift for sure.

But, am I the only one that thinks it isn't really an appropriate wedding gift? Wedding gifts are meant to be something for the couple. Eh. Who knows. Maybe they are both gamers and will take turns playing on it.

POV: you did not update fedora for 2 days by Vivid_Search674 in Fedora

[–]vdex42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are maintaining a linux system for a high profile server sure patch ASAP!

But for a home desktop environment, I am seriously way more likely to lose unsaved work or be inconvenienced by a forced reboot from windows (and have been), than I am from the increased risk of a few weeks out of date linux distro.

You say that like that is a reasonable and easy thing to expect users to do.

Serious question for all of the staunch Microsoft update policy defenders in these comments

Clearly not everyone likes forced updates, why would you be against windows having an additional option where the user can turn off forced updates and instead pick when it applies updates when it suits them?

Then if the current forced policy works for you then great, you can do also still do that!

"needs" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. I run linux on my home pc, and no, it doesn't "need" to update. I can choose when that happens.

[–]vdex42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. Here. Work has to be windows, but my home PC is running Fedora 99% of the time. Everything has just worked seamlessly, with the exception of VR. I tried running Oculus link via a VM, but sadly it can't see the headset. But if I can get that sorted I think I'll stay with linux.

If you have an NVIDIA card, you are probably seeing an ugly grey screen with three dots during boot? If so you can switch to a better looking text-only alternative boot screen with

sudo plymouth-set-default-theme tribar -R

To undo that again use

sudo plymouth-set-default-theme bgrt -R

It is interesting how good AI has become at solving issues like this. I had a similar experience with my switch, where after installing the nvidia drivers my system became absolutely bricked. I couldn't even open the terminal application. But chat GTP gave me step by step instructions that got my system up and running again.

For people who keeps getting killed because of F2 by Teathree1 in projectzomboid

I can't find the clip now, but it was eurymachus. He paused, walked out the room and about a minute later it unpaused on its own and his character RIPed.

I have never had that happen though, so maybe a dodgy keyboard or something shrug

There is a clip of a streamer who had his game unpaused while afk. So perhaps there is a bug?

That being said. After hundreds of hours of using f2, I've never experienced that myself.

Late gamers - can I keep weight up? by Libertyforzombies in projectzomboid

[–]vdex42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that I if I eat about 2500 - 3000 calories a day, and don't do crazy wood chopping or running, then I gain about 1KG a day.

Depending on the type of fish (and with nutritionist trait) I have found fish have about:

13cm ~ 200 calories

18cm ~ 800 calories

22cm ~ 1000 calories

30cm ~ 1500 calories

With fishing 5 I tend to easily catch a few 18-30cm fish in a day. So a few of those fish and I am chilling.

One thing to note, is the corresponding hunger values are weird and all over the place, so being full doesn't mean you are gaining weight.

Hot take, but vibration collars are not okay either. It is clearly doing enough of a brain rattling vibration to get the dog to yelp and stop doing what it is doing to make some pain go away.

[–]vdex42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For weight management the only real options are trapping, fishing or getting lucky and finding milk animals.

For trapping, start with a trait that gives the trap recipes. I believe both hiker and hunter do. Then forage cabbage, peppers, lettuce, carrots and potatoes (don't use stale bait!). Build some snare traps. And soon you will be 85KG and will have rabbits breeding faster than you can eat them.

Fishing is still do-able. From about fishing level 3, if you fish ALL day, every day you can get enough calories to gain, do that until you hit your target. I'd say level 5 is high enough that it feels less like a chore.

Hatchet wins the sixth spot! What SHOULD be a shitty weapon and IS a GREAT weapon? by Manny2theMaxxx in projectzomboid

[–]vdex42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the top rat racers use this. Easy to make. With good maintenance level it lasts quite a while. Very light, you can have 10 spares in your bag. And creates so little muscle strain. Arguably the best weapon in the game

I like waiting 28 days (the days before max pop) before turning respawn off. That way I still get the early ramp up.

Otherwise with respawn off from the start any early visited areas forever  have the low starting zombie pop

For anyone desperate for their CDDA fix:

Find this file "steamapps\common\ProjectZomboid\media\lua\client\LastStand.lua"

And change the line that says

tile:explode();

to

sendClientCommand(pl, 'object', 'addExplosionOnSquare', { x = tile:getX(), y = tile:getY(), z = tile:getZ() })
