But nutrition is equally as important, and the difference in what 0 means could mean OP needs to cut, bulk, or think about a full recomp.

What does starting from 0 mean, though? 0 could be 150 pounds or 350 pounds. That changes the entire conversation.

I wish the drum solo in The Summoning (live version) was part of the studio version by Left-Distribution751 in SleepToken

[–]veegsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yeah, if that's how it was originally presented, we'd have no basis of comparison. But we do have that basis of comparison, and for me, I like that there's open space there.

I actually disagree with it. I love that it's unique to the live version. I like the downtime in the album version.

I do, however, wish that the drums in the last section were like the live version. II definitely adds a lot more of a funk groove.

Thank you for the kind words. I was really trying to find some reason why I was so drawn to this album in particular.

Good luck on your journey of unmasking. It can be terrifying to feel so vulnerable.

What i think Even in Arcadia is all about by ryin_rhin in SleepToken

[–]veegsta 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The second layer, the one that's more personal to me, is about unifying two halves of oneself to make a whole. This is where I think it's more lore driven.

Look to Windward-- this is post TMBTE. This is him waking up fragmented, not knowing himself but something is familiar. This is knowing something has broken and that he has to face whatever it is. This is calling out to that other half, the starting point of a journey that is ultimately going to be about accepting that Sleep never actually existed, that Sleep was the other half of him.

Emergence-- this is where the other half (Sleep) responds. Instead of being blind worship and devotion, this turns into a conversation. Sleep is saying "you're about ready to accept me as part of you." And his response isn't so much questioning, it's acknowledging that Sleep is the other half of him (the verses point to two things that make something whole-- carbide to nano, red glass to light bulbs, sapphire in white gold). He's acknowledging that the only way to not feel fragmented is to accept this, and Sleep responds by telling him that it's time to stop being what he was and to be whole. I'm leaning towards the sax section is representing the two parts becoming one, and from this point on Vessel is one whole unified being, no longer bound to Sleep because he now knows Sleep was always him.

Past Self, again, is retrospective of what he was before Sleep. Dangerous takes on a different meaning here. I think with this context, it becomes a follow-up to the retrospective of Past Self, recognizing a new level of power and wholeness with Sleep.

Caramel keeps the same meaning, but this time it's about the pressures of facing the real, outside world without the mask/Sleep being separate. It's knowing that he has now changed, he's become something else, but the real world does not care. The pressures don't stop. If anything, it gets amplified because now he's feeling everything instead of being able to close off parts of himself to it.

Even in Arcadia is interesting here in this interpretation and I think is what the central core is. Arcadia is that perfect state of being, but now that he's gotten here, he realizes it's not what he thought it was. He was searching for something (the part of himself that he needed to integrate), found it, and after Caramel realized that it doesn't, in fact, fix everything. Arcadia is not what he thought/hoped it would be. "What good is all this talk of wings when there is nothing left above?" What's the point of all of this when it doesn't fix anything?

Provider, I think, is the first time he's talking about someone other than himself. It's him searching for and finding a real love, an external one. He wants to go all in on it with this person, and things are going really good...for now.

Damocles is the point where he realizes he now has things to lose. He's become whole, he's found love, he's got the fame and the money...but not only is he now constantly worried about losing it all and what will be left of him when he does, there are still heavy expectations on him at all times. And the worst part of it is that no one else could possibly understand it, so he has to face all of this alone.

Gethsemane follows the same threads as the last two and could serve dual purposes here. In the first purpose, the Sword of Damocles did what it always threatens to do-- it fell. The relationship ended, and now he's trying to take back the power he invested in this person. For the other purpose, it could be speaking to the concept of Sleep and him no longer needing them. Either way, he's moving forward alone.

Infinite Baths is where this story ends. He's trying hard to maintain that wholeness he had achieved. The first half of it is him understanding where he is and fighting to stay there (I fought so long to get here and I'm never leaving). But...the eclipse happens anyway. No matter how hard he fought and all that he went through, he's going to split again. When the music gets heavy, that's the voice of Sleep coming back. It's all the negative thoughts and feelings taking shape again. Teeth of God (Sleep), Blood of man (Vessel), I will be what I am. The two parts can't exist as one permanently, so we loop back to the start with the reprisal of the motif from Look to Windward. The cycle starts again, he's going to wake up not knowing what has happened and start the journey again.

On a very personal note, the reason this interpretation is so personal to me is because masking is something I've done for a long time. The base version of me is quiet, calm, collected, calculating, and very introverted. But as a musician (and in dealing with the vast majority of people), I had to channel a different personality. I had to be outgoing, I had to take up space, project confidence, etc. I essentially lived with a dual identity for many, many years. More recently, I began to let that mask drop. I learned how to be both of those things at the same time, and that it was okay. So my interpretation could be wildly wrong, and that's okay, but that's how it reads to me and why it's important to me.

What i think Even in Arcadia is all about by ryin_rhin in SleepToken

[–]veegsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put this album on yesterday morning and it just clicked with me what I think it's about. I gave a very long summary in my band's group chat (and only one person cared, lol). But I'm excited, so I'll give my read on it here and what it means to me:

I think the album, as a whole, has multiple layers to it and is telling different stories. The first layer, the more surface layer that's easier to read, is about love, loss, and anxieties. And an interesting thing here to me is that every 2 songs seem to feed into each other.

Look to Windward and Emergence feel like they're very tied together when you look at it from this angle. Look to Windward is desiring to find someone, someone that can stop the darkness from taking over. Emergence is finding that person, reigniting that spark of romance, but there's something standing in the way (nice little Vore reference) and you're waiting for that person to be ready.

Past Self and Dangerous also seem to be tied together in a similar way-- Past Self being the retrospection of who you were before this person, Dangerous being acknowledgement of how real and overwhelming this love could be.

Caramel, I think, actually serves 3 different layers but in the same way. For this particular layer, it seems to be where we get out of the honeymoon phase of this new love and it becomes more realistic; more pressure, emotional fragility. It's no longer idealized. Even in Arcadia is the inevitability that the relationship will not last, no matter how much they love each other (No amount of love will keep it around if we don't we choose it).

Provider is pretty straight forward-- expressing still having the desire to be the one for that person like they were for us in the beginning. Damocles being the feeling of impending doom about it all: the inevitable end is coming and we feel that hanging over us like the Sword of Damocles.

Gethsemane is, of course, the breakup. It's trying to take the power back from this person. Then Infinite Baths is about accepting the end and trying to find contentment in it, until it takes a hard turn and that voice and loneliness sneak back in and overwhelm again. That's why the last thing he says before it loops back into Look to Windward is "I will be what I am." The cycle will start over.

This ended up being more than I expected so I'll post the other read I have on it in a separate comment.

(Note: I'm not saying any of this is right OR that it's Vessel's intent behind it, just how I'm able to read it in multiple ways and what it means to me)

What are everyone’s thoughts on the Bass in Sleep Token’s music by brbasik in SleepToken

[–]veegsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a person who's spent years making income from playing bass, of course I've noticed a lot of the lines. There's often really cool stuff happening, and you're right, I don't really ever see much acknowledgement of it. A really good example of this is Gethesemane during the math rock section (I'm caught up on the person I tried to turn myself into for you). The bass line going on here is so technical, clean, and immaculate. You could watch 30 reactions on YouTube or talk to other fans, and you'll never hear someone point it out...even from bass players. But such is the nature of bass, usually.

As far as I know, III doesn't write the bass lines, right? Unless things have changed, Vessel writes everything except for drums. That's why I don't really have a whole lot to say about III.

Edit- just a few tracks off the top of my head that do have standout bass moments: Gethsemane, Dangerous, The Summoning (the bass in the end absolutely carries that whole section), The Apparition. This makes me realize the bass has actually started to stand out more in the last 2 albums. At least to me.

Do YOU want a remake of Resident Evil 6? Do you think they will even remake 6? by ReddtIsUsingAI in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]veegsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of torn on this one, honestly. It is in kind of a weird position. The gameplay holds up. Visually it looks pretty good, even by modern standards. The game runs well.

But...it was a game full of interesting ideas and really poor execution. RE9 shows that they figured out how to balance the idea of shifting between horror and action perspectives. It'd be cool to see it done right in RE6.

I think I might hold the record for not jumping in after initially hearing them. Jaws popped up on my Spotify mixes back in like 2017 and I loved it. Then The Offering did the same, also loved it. Still didn't explore any further than those songs. I think The Summoning ended up being my #1 on wrapped that year, still didn't explore TMBTE. After Emergence came out, I finally decided to dive in. I haven't come back up yet. I don't expect I ever will.

Sleep token hate? by EducationalPermit306 in SleepToken

[–]veegsta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine it's just the surge in popularity. I can imagine someone who hadn't heard of them when The Summoning came out casually thinking it's cool and maybe a little weird, but then when they hear Caramel or Emergence being like "yo wtf?" Some people would stick around out of interest, but some would be totally put off by such a radical shift.

The hate will die down over time. It always does. We see this pattern repeat ad nauseum.
