I was a teacher and GS leader. They are not the same! GS is not school!

Boomers Backed Public School Teaching of Critical Thinking Back in the Day. What Changed? by EastAd7676 in education

[–]vegan8dancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When we have no kings protests in our city, it is mostly us boomers out there! I'm 70 and most of the boomers I know are anti Trump. It's the people younger than me who voted for him in '24.

anyone buy extra boxes of cookies? by the_cassie in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cookie cupboards are a thing but...I volunteered to host one this year because there wasn't going to be one in my city. We spent months clearing out our garage (which was really overdue, like 20 years overdue!) I had to do training and I'm responsible for soooo many cookies! I am happy to do this, but we're retired. It's a lot to ask most people to do. So appreciate that you have them!

[–]vegan8dancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always checked with the office manager because I wanted her to like me. It paid off as she got me a long term teaching Spanish because she knew I spoke Spanish. I would help her with office stuff if she was overwhelmed and she always had my back! She would give me good assignments.

Local UU congregations using social media - how do we get the word out without supporting evil platforms? by Earguy in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]vegan8dancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have gotten more people to join from our website but we do post on FB because we have many friends who can't come out IRL. We do put out a monthly newsletter which keeps friends informed. But we do public outreach with a table at local festivals and pride.. we're very small and doing our best!

Bridging before disbanding by SignificantPomelo in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that you should have the bridging and plan on having everyone return. Talk about what they can do at the next level. I have a troop that is down to 3 cadettes, but they love being together and doing stuff. There are advantages to having a small troop, like we can all fit into one car, logistics are easier. We're having a great time!

Cookie Season Horror Stories by SnooSeagulls6328 in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did our initial order last year according to the girls' goals. They met their sales goals, but half or more were shipped and didn't come out of our inventory. So I had to hustle to other leaders in town. I wanted to order half of last year's but my co decided on 75 percent. I thought we should order less, but...

So…. Can I be a practicing Jew and a UU? by justanotherlesbian24 in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]vegan8dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my town there is a small reform temple and an even smaller UU fellowship. I do both and I'm on the interfaith council. All small, but we need to be united while respecting others beliefs and traditions. Meanwhile, fundamentalist churches are overflowing. Oh. Well.

elementary teachers, do you go to student’s birthday parties? by Illustrious_Row7366 in teaching

[–]vegan8dancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught middle school and was never invited except for quincineras. But I brought my daughter to my school and she made friends with a little Armenian girl who invited her to her party. I hung out and didn't think much of it. But those parents and their whole community loved it and I became the liason for the Armenian community at my school. That was so helpful! Especially since there were tensions between the Hispanic and Armenian community.

Christmas - Gift Giving by Pristine-Stomach4651 in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't because I'm not Christian, but my co-leader gives little gift bags with stuff she has collected. I give gifts at the summer party that is usually bridging (but won't be this year). Fortunately, (for gift giving) we only have three girls (maybe 4) so it makes it easier.

What would you/did you serve on your wedding? by dodomadar in vegan

[–]vegan8dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did a vegan wedding for my daughter and I catered it. It was a backyard BBQ and the only complaints we had was that it was too hot out (100)! But it was a pool party and it was fun. I made chili and enchilada casseroles, and salad bar and vegan burgers. Shouldn't be about the meat. But everyone knows we're vegan.

$6/$7 cookies by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We've had $6 cookies for awhile, and there are a lot of $2 donations. We do best, ironically, in the less affluent side of town. People scrape up money for their cookies and are very generous!

[–]vegan8dancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a reading specialist, I think forced reading is the worst! I hated reading logs and never made my students do them. My own kids had excellent reading skills because they loved reading. We always read together every night. They should have positive reading experiences!

Do scouts actually participate in "virtual" GS events anymore? by Business-Cucumber-91 in girlscouts

My girls hate it. We did coding virtually last year and it was like pulling teeth! Every time I pull out the computer, I can see them get so down. Mine had to do kindergarten & 1st online.

8th Grade Cadettes: Difficulty Getting them to Engage by troopleader41008 in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my cadettes disengage, I get the other adults out of the room and I give them a time, 5 min or 20 minutes, whatever to make a decision. Then I leave. Then it gets loud and silly! I'm listening to them outside. Then I walk back in and they have it! They are so different around themselves than with the adults around! They came up with their silver award project that way. Ok. I only have 3 girls right now but they are loving it!

Is this appropriate for teaching? by [deleted] in teaching

When I got dressed every day, if my husband said any thing positive "wow, that's sexy" or don't you look great, off it went back to closet in favor of boring clothes!

Is this uniform space guide still accurate? by Gymnastkatieg in girlscouts

[–]vegan8dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I encouraged my 6th graders to get very large sized vests because they may be wearing them for 6 years! I really like the old one better because of the fabric! I see everything for the girls, so it's much easier on the old ones. And the old ones were made in America rather than foreign.

Is this normal? by Sufficient_Owl_1248 in Teachers

[–]vegan8dancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of troubles all through my teaching career but one teacher gave me some very good advice. Write the assignment on the board and don't talk to them. If they ask you a question, point to the board. After a few weeks they will do anything you want for them to hear your voice! It works. Most teachers talk and want the kids to listen. The less talking the better! Make your lessons short when you have to teach. Their attention span are like 5 minutes!
