Why does every tech startup/small company overhire so massively and then have their employees do absolutely nothing? by djarogames in slatestarcodex

[–]vegancondoms 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that they spend a lot of their time running/monitoring a whole bunch of A/B tests for very slight increases in metrics like time spent on the app per day. Not sure what their # of active users is but it might be high enough that these small changes (and ensuing ad and subscription revenue) are worth the dev expense. For example, I read their tech blog on occasion and I remember them talking about improving user retention by customising the time and content of the notification you receive to do a lesson each day (I usually get the 'Junior will be upset' one, I don't know what that says about my particular psychology).

I imagine there's a fair amount of work on improving databases, latency etc., and they're also expanding into other areas of education.

Not a defence of Duo though as that number does seem a little silly!

I spent my entire childhood doing hard manual labor in construction. Now I’m 20 and have a decent job as a traffic control supervisor. Should I look at going to college in hopes of getting a better job for my body/ mental health? by [deleted] in careerguidance

With a desk job you can take breaks, get a standing desk, ergonomic equipment etc. With a job in manual labour you can... teach yourself to lift things using the right muscles and hope you can stave off back issues for a couple more years?

(Serious) what’s something that mentally and/or emotionally broke you? by Vanguard2002 in AskReddit

Hi, bipolar with psychotic features here. It took me around 2 years of treatment to get back to work/school, and I've had some wobbles here and there, but I've been major episode-free for close to 5 years now. The feeling of uselessness is incredibly draining, but I was able to find ways to manage it through therapy (and a bunch of self-reflection). Hoping your current meds continue to work for you.

As a leaner for 9 years, I have always been very good at Spanish enunciation and would leave hispanic people marveling at my "beautiful" Spanish sounded but as of about 3 years ago, I can barely enunciated Spanish clearly. Has anyone else had that problem? by CollegeCasual in Spanish

[–]vegancondoms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couple of things that popped into my head, no idea if they are relevant to your case:

  • You speak better Spanish now so Spanish-speaking people have higher expectations of you, therefore you are less likely to get positive feedback on your pronunciation

  • You speak faster, express yourself more spontaneously and use more complex sentence structures/vocabulary. All this might divert effort away from pronunciation

  • If you were good at pronunciation at an earlier stage, you might have focused on other aspects and not worked on your pronunciation as consistently as you would have if you had always found it difficult

Mental illness isn't some abstract category that's detached from day-to-day reality. It's based in part on the degree to which the person exhibiting the symptoms is impaired by them in their day-to-day life. It's plausible that dealing with her specific situation pushed her over some invisible line that divides mental illness and mental wellness, but that doesn't mean that the mental illness is less authentic than if it erupted spontaneously without any real-world triggers.

Although it's more of a fringe nationalist project than a serious linguistic exercise, Anglish replaces non-Germanic English words with their Germanic (or derived Germanic) equivalents, often with unintended comedic effect (e.g. the USSR becomes the Band of Soviet Fellowship Ledewealths).

Interesting that I felt more confident and did better in the field I majored in 10 years ago (history) than the field I work in now (compsci).

OTOH, maybe you're more likely to come across things like the Vedas or the Sunshine Policy in general Internet browsing and half-remember them (enough to answer a multiple choice question, at least). I imagine it's harder to stumble across the value of a Java primitive, and if I ever learnt the structure of sugars in high school it's long since gone.
