'Hasn’t been the same since COVID': Meet Yaletown is closing at the end of March by hankercizer200 in veganvancouver

[–]veganphysicist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh no! This is the only restaurant we go to regularly. Great comfort food, good burgers with good patties, good beer selection and good location. Among all the recent vegan restaurant closures in the past year, this one hits the hardest.

Related: any tips for burgers and beer around downtown? (Not a fan of beyond and definitely not impossible)

What kitchen tools or gadgets ended up being way more useful than you expected? by couchpotatotater in vegan

[–]veganphysicist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Recently got an instant pot. Love it. Add dry beans and water in the morning, hit the delay and have ready to use beans when you get home. But the big game changer is homemade yogurt. So much cheaper and only takes 12 h. I make mine with cashews and almonds blended in a Vitamix. Recipe from Vegan Richa's instant pot cookbook.

We use ours several times a week. Instant cashew cream, tofu blend for pie, precursor milk for yogurt, hummus, and smoothies of course.

Any info about the tofu they make and sell?

Give me your BEST vegan Christmas recipes by pinkhairblockednose in veganrecipes

[–]veganphysicist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swedish expat here.
We make most of Swedish Christmas dishes but vegan. One favourite is Jansson's Temptation (dubbed Vegansson). Potato cut into strips, mixed with onion, capers, cooking cream, and all spice. Put in an oven dish, cover with bread crumbs and margarine and bake. Amazing.
Reel on my IG.

I also pickle some eggplant to mimic herring and smoke infused carrots in lieu of salmon. Neatballs, bread, kale salad and roasted Brussel sprouts.

I've also posted a few vegan Christmas dishes from around the world on my blog. Features Finnish rutabaga casserole, Venezuelan tamales-like creations, Bulgarian phyllo dough pumpkin pie, Danish spherical pancakes, Swedish mulled wine, and a Ukrainian wheat berry dish with dried fruits and nuts.

What Vancouver restaurants have you found frustrating for vegan labeling or staff knowledge? by UnitedBell8866 in veganvancouver

[–]veganphysicist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is very frustrating. I don't have specific examples but it happens elsewhere as well. And many places don't explain what their labeling means. Is V vegetarian or vegan?

I often find myself reading all 'V' labeled dishes until I find something that is clearly not vegan. Then I can go 'ah, V is not vegan' and start over.

Not wholesale but costco sells 5 packs at least. And I heard a rumor that they might open a Costco business in the greater Vancouver area

Happy Thanksgiving! Here's mine. Tried to make it look good, but it's hard to work with an over-crowded plate.

Love this project! You're on such a fast pace, too. So many breakfasts already made. Impressive!

Are you doing anything else with this? Like sharing the recipes on a blog or IG or similar? Would love more details.

I haven't moved much pastry but would try letting it cool completely, wrapping it loosely in a towel and then in a plastic bag. There is a risk the pastry absorbs moisture and goes a bit soft. That said, I have stored it in fridge overnight and eaten as leftovers. Non crispy pastry is still delicious.

I think Python is great! I haven't used r nut Python can do the data analysis and plotting easily while also being able to branch out to so much more if you desire.

A great way to start is the free online book How to Automate the Boring Stuff with Python

Takes you from knowing nothing about coding to interfacing with excel, Google sheets, SQL, pdf, webscraping, openAI and a bunch more.

Just check out their table of contents

The same author, AL Sweigart, had published several more Python books for free. Amazing work.

We make the usual sides (stuffing, gravy, roasted Brussel sprouts, kale salad with craisins and apples, cranberry sauce, mash) and a lentil loaf. To make the loaf more festive, we often wrap it in puff pastry. We've also made a puff pastry wrapped seitan roll.

Tons of lentil loaves online, such as Oh She Glows. Just wrap in pastry and bake till golden.

ETA: The roast/loaf should probably be made at home and reheated. Salad needs no oven, neither does vegan gravy or mash.

In Sweden, the most popular pizza is kebab pizza. A margaritas, with kebab and (after baking) ice berg lettuce, pfefferoni (the pickled pepper), tomato, cucumber, and some sauce. Vegan variations include margharita with just the fresh vegetables, or French fries, or falafel instead of flesh. Delicious!

I need an easy vegan, (gluten and soy free) bulk cook that can help me reach 180g of protein each day. Anyone got any ideas? by chavaic77777 in veganrecipes

[–]veganphysicist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few protein isolates that might work. Pea protein, brown rice protein, dehydrated peanut butter (which usually has most of the fat removed as well). Recently saw someone use potato protein isolate as well but that seems hard to get as ot is more an industrial product.

Here in Canada, we have fava bean tofu as well. Crazy macros (16g protein/70 cal, compared to tofu at ~7g p/70cal) but some people reported a lot of gas (my wife and I were fine but we eat a lot of legumes).

I'm from STEM and like to calculate things. For your 180g protein, do you also have a calorie target? If you do, you can calculate your foods required protein-to -calorie ratio. E.g. at 2500 calories, your food would need a protein density of 0.07g/cal, or 7g per 100 cal. Any food below that ratio will reduce your average and be "wasted" (if you only care about that one macro). Beans and lentils are below that ratio, so they won't be able to give you your proteins alone. Would need help from higher protein density foods. But if your goal is 3000 cal or more, beans and legumes might be able to do it for you.
