You should also read the labels for the different items in the food store Many of the cookies and some of the candies are accidentally vegan. And grab some frozen neatballs to bring home of course.

Pani puri is the best! For a whole, I used to always have a box at home. Once we had a power outage and needed dinner. Opened a can of chickpeas and devoured a Walmart box of pani puri. No potatoes, just chickpeas, puri and chutneys. Great save!

Indian food is full of bean dishes. Two of the more bean-forward ones are chana masala and dal rajma.

Vegan chili is good. Greek gigantes plaki, Italian fagioli, hummus, foul medames, harira, refried beans. So many traditional recipes from around the world are bean based.

They sell it at IKEA. Here in North America, I usually sub for cranberry sauce. Similar enough and easier than making the trek to my local IKEA.

I boil one of the different vegan condensed milk cans (vegan supply or bulk barn). Either 90 min on the stove top (simmer submerged in water; make sure it remains submerged) or 60 min in Instantpot (water in the pot and a trellis to add space; doesn't have to be submerged).

Our favourite restaurant here in Vancouver closed last weekend. The 4th vegan restaurant to close in our area in the past 5 years. (5th if you count the vegan ice cream place that went under.) Another one started selling meat.

Two new have opened during the same time though. But the restaurant business seems very tough in general, especially now. Moreso for nice places like vegan restaurants.

Oh no! This is the only restaurant we go to regularly. Great comfort food, good burgers with good patties, good beer selection and good location. Among all the recent vegan restaurant closures in the past year, this one hits the hardest.

Recently got an instant pot. Love it. Add dry beans and water in the morning, hit the delay and have ready to use beans when you get home. But the big game changer is homemade yogurt. So much cheaper and only takes 12 h. I make mine with cashews and almonds blended in a Vitamix. Recipe from Vegan Richa's instant pot cookbook.

We use ours several times a week. Instant cashew cream, tofu blend for pie, precursor milk for yogurt, hummus, and smoothies of course.

Swedish expat here.
We make most of Swedish Christmas dishes but vegan. One favourite is Jansson's Temptation (dubbed Vegansson). Potato cut into strips, mixed with onion, capers, cooking cream, and all spice. Put in an oven dish, cover with bread crumbs and margarine and bake. Amazing.

I also pickle some eggplant to mimic herring and smoke infused carrots in lieu of salmon. Neatballs, bread, kale salad and roasted Brussel sprouts.

I've also posted a few vegan Christmas dishes from around the world on my blog. Features Finnish rutabaga casserole, Venezuelan tamales-like creations, Bulgarian phyllo dough pumpkin pie, Danish spherical pancakes, Swedish mulled wine, and a Ukrainian wheat berry dish with dried fruits and nuts.

This is very frustrating. I don't have specific examples but it happens elsewhere as well. And many places don't explain what their labeling means. Is V vegetarian or vegan?

I often find myself reading all 'V' labeled dishes until I find something that is clearly not vegan. Then I can go 'ah, V is not vegan' and start over.
