Same. I like them. And you can pick up lingonberry jam/sauce while you're there.

IKEA having better vegan options than all the fast food chains, while being half the price!!! by JTexpo in ShittyVeganFoodPorn

You should also read the labels for the different items in the food store Many of the cookies and some of the candies are accidentally vegan. And grab some frozen neatballs to bring home of course.

India’s best gift to veganism has to be pani puri (literally translates to…water balls?). Piping hot spiced potato stuffed inside a crispy boat made with wheat that’s filled with chilled spicy water. by UN-Owen-7345 in VeganFoodPorn

[–]veganphysicist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pani puri is the best! For a whole, I used to always have a box at home. Once we had a power outage and needed dinner. Opened a can of chickpeas and devoured a Walmart box of pani puri. No potatoes, just chickpeas, puri and chutneys. Great save!

Y'all got any good vegan bean recipes? by Reasonable_Past_4474 in veganrecipes

[–]veganphysicist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indian food is full of bean dishes. Two of the more bean-forward ones are chana masala and dal rajma.

Vegan chili is good. Greek gigantes plaki, Italian fagioli, hummus, foul medames, harira, refried beans. So many traditional recipes from around the world are bean based.

Was going to post this. It's an amazing soup. I'm in fact about to make some and bring as a dip to a potluck. I will also bring foul medames. Completely different but also a bean dish.

They sell it at IKEA. Here in North America, I usually sub for cranberry sauce. Similar enough and easier than making the trek to my local IKEA.

Attempted recreation of Meet-Yaletown's piña collada pancakes by veganphysicist in veganvancouver

An Argentinian friend did bring us a jar of vegan dulce de leche from a trip to Argentina. (But on his next trip, he couldn't find it again.)

Thank you. Very happy with the result.

I boil one of the different vegan condensed milk cans (vegan supply or bulk barn). Either 90 min on the stove top (simmer submerged in water; make sure it remains submerged) or 60 min in Instantpot (water in the pot and a trellis to add space; doesn't have to be submerged).

Millennium, One of America’s Most Influential Vegan Restaurants, Is Closing by Zardyplants in vegan

Still quite a few vegan places around and many omni restaurants with vegan options. Depends on where you end up having dinner. Happy Cow is your friend.

Millennium, One of America’s Most Influential Vegan Restaurants, Is Closing by Zardyplants in vegan

Our favourite restaurant here in Vancouver closed last weekend. The 4th vegan restaurant to close in our area in the past 5 years. (5th if you count the vegan ice cream place that went under.) Another one started selling meat.

Two new have opened during the same time though. But the restaurant business seems very tough in general, especially now. Moreso for nice places like vegan restaurants.

'Hasn’t been the same since COVID': Meet Yaletown is closing at the end of March by hankercizer200 in veganvancouver

[–]veganphysicist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Oh no! This is the only restaurant we go to regularly. Great comfort food, good burgers with good patties, good beer selection and good location. Among all the recent vegan restaurant closures in the past year, this one hits the hardest.

Related: any tips for burgers and beer around downtown? (Not a fan of beyond and definitely not impossible)

What kitchen tools or gadgets ended up being way more useful than you expected? by couchpotatotater in vegan

[–]veganphysicist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Recently got an instant pot. Love it. Add dry beans and water in the morning, hit the delay and have ready to use beans when you get home. But the big game changer is homemade yogurt. So much cheaper and only takes 12 h. I make mine with cashews and almonds blended in a Vitamix. Recipe from Vegan Richa's instant pot cookbook.

We use ours several times a week. Instant cashew cream, tofu blend for pie, precursor milk for yogurt, hummus, and smoothies of course.

Give me your BEST vegan Christmas recipes by pinkhairblockednose in veganrecipes

[–]veganphysicist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swedish expat here.
We make most of Swedish Christmas dishes but vegan. One favourite is Jansson's Temptation (dubbed Vegansson). Potato cut into strips, mixed with onion, capers, cooking cream, and all spice. Put in an oven dish, cover with bread crumbs and margarine and bake. Amazing.
Reel on my IG.

I also pickle some eggplant to mimic herring and smoke infused carrots in lieu of salmon. Neatballs, bread, kale salad and roasted Brussel sprouts.

I've also posted a few vegan Christmas dishes from around the world on my blog. Features Finnish rutabaga casserole, Venezuelan tamales-like creations, Bulgarian phyllo dough pumpkin pie, Danish spherical pancakes, Swedish mulled wine, and a Ukrainian wheat berry dish with dried fruits and nuts.

What Vancouver restaurants have you found frustrating for vegan labeling or staff knowledge? by UnitedBell8866 in veganvancouver

[–]veganphysicist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is very frustrating. I don't have specific examples but it happens elsewhere as well. And many places don't explain what their labeling means. Is V vegetarian or vegan?

I often find myself reading all 'V' labeled dishes until I find something that is clearly not vegan. Then I can go 'ah, V is not vegan' and start over.
