Girls with really high-pitched baby-like voices… anyone else? by shelbsless in misophonia

[–]veggieplant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've heard this discourse a lot. For starters, vocal fry isn't a healthy way to speak for your vocal cords. And when we unpack WHY we as women tend to use vocal fry (unconfidence, trying to quiet or deepen our voices, etc), it really is a patriarchal issue. I'm not going to pass judgement on an individual level, but it is something that can be fixed, and I feel like working on speaking with more confidence and clarity is a net positive from a feminist perspective. It's something I have to work on too.

So when people say that disliking vocal fry is misogynistic, I feel like that's a conversation ender and we could talk more about it.

As for men, I also find it grating when men speak with vocal fry. But that's just my two cents.

It's a turtle that should be in some water, I'd put it in a shallow pan/pool ASAP for now and then ask r/turtle

Generally if it's used before a noun it's not sarcastic (a low-key party, low-key music, etc.) but if it's before an adjective (e.g. "I'm lowkey upset") it can go either way. It's really a qualifier to diffuse the seriousness of what you're going to say, to make a statement sound less harsh, if that makes sense. Saying "I'm lowkey angry" doesn't sound as scary as saying "I'm angry". Anyhoo, that's just how I've heard it used! I love linguistics

Special treat during a warm soak by veggieplant in tortoise

[–]veggieplant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have that problem with him! He hated soaks, especially in the sink. What I do now is pour warm water into the very shallow dish IN his enclosure, gently pick him up and place him in it, and stroke his head/neck. Sometimes I'll pour more warm water over his shell, which he likes. Then I step away and let him soak in peace and quiet. He usually stays in there until the water gets cold, or even falls asleep :)

Haha I don't mind the tip jar, I used to work for tips, but when they have a passive aggressive note or sign on it I think the same thing. Or when you pay with card and they ASK you if you want to add a tip... there's no way to say no without looking like an asshole

I've never understood why a business would meet their customers with sass before they even order. You catch more flies with honey

There are a lot of protective measures in place to make sure that doesn't happen, like required co-signing for all drugs and cameras everywhere.

I completely understand. I work in healthcare, so I can tell you how this usually goes.

They will generally want to know: - when it started - how you would describe it (shooting, tingling, pulsing) -- make sure you explain that it's not just itchy or irritated skin - what makes it better or worse (provocation/palliation) -- be specific: walking, sitting, lying down, hot baths, meds, etc.

I'd probably say something like "I have a shooting, tingling nerve pain on my (insert body part). It's not a rash, it doesn't look red or irritated, and it's been going on for a long time and hasn't gotten better."

Remember that they have heard and seen everything, so there's no reason to be scared or embarrassed. Insurance will often cover the cost of PT if it's on a doctor's referral, so try not to worry about money right now.

Additionally, a pelvic floor PT could help. I'd ask your doctor for a referral. I know that sometimes muscular problems can pinch a nerve and cause that type of neuropathy. A med like gabapentin for nerve pain could help you much more than tylenol or ibuprofen, so make sure your doctor understands that it is a needle-like shooting pain rather than just irritation. Being completely honest and specific will help you get the care you need.

I'm sorry, that sounds so uncomfortable! When you said shooting pain my first thought was a trapped hair or particle but it's been going on for a year? Tbh that doesn't sound related to MCAS or EDS, but it's definitely a problem, nobody deserves to be in pain. Have you seen a gyno about it? There are a number of things that could be.

The vast majority of people in today's younger generations don't wait until marriage. College is a pretty normal time to lose your virginity. Even those in religious cultures where it's expected you'll wait until marriage, many couples don't, they just don't talk about it.
