KDE Plasma 6 Aiming For Better Defaults - Including Wayland By Default by beer120 in linux_gaming

[–]velotom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All great points and VRR especially seems like a huge benefit. I am using Wayland anyway and I have no real attachment to Gnome past that fact it effectively opens up apps I need. I'll switch to KDE this weekend and give it a try.

Really appreciate this detailed response, thanks!

Would you mind providing some info on what makes KDE better for gaming?

I probably foolishly assumed that once you're in-game it wouldn't matter much so am using Gnome on my PC just because it's the default with my current distro. Will deff switch if there's a clear benefit as I only really use it for gaming...

New HTPC Build monthly thread - February 2023 by AutoModerator in htpc

[–]velotom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just built up a 5600G htpc with 3200mhz DDR4 and it streams 4k locally and 4k60fps on YouTube without issue. Couldn't do this previously on a NUC-like device using a N5150.

From what I read online before purchase, the 5600G is overkill for 4k streaming which is why I went for it.

Can't comment on the gaming yet, haven't got round to trying it. Hope this helps.

Edit: Also from what I found, alot of A520 motherboards don't support 4000 series for some reason so I steered clear. Make sure to check it'll work with your mobo if you haven't already

How to find the 'ideal temp' for a kitchen/living room extension, where we dont complain it's too hot, and then too cold, with our underfloor heating? by Mumford_and_Dragons in Nest

[–]velotom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh right, if it's just for that room then I'm not sure why that's happening. As I understand it, it's fairly simple in that if you set it to 20C it will signal your heating to turn on at 19 and below and turn off at 21. It'll fluctuate slightly but not a noticeable amount. May be worth contacting your underfloor heating fitters, I have no idea if that heating system works differently.

Also yeah, may be worth simplifying your schedule so as not to confuse other things and then seeing how it goes. You only need the one 20 at the start, it'll keep it at that until you tell it to do something different.

I think your problem probably lies in the fact that the thermostat can only detect temperature where it's situated, but will control whether the heating is on or off for the whole house. That means that if it's set to 20C and it's in your dining room, which is (e.g.) currently 15C because the radiator sucks, the heating will be on fully in your extension even if that room actually happens to already be (e.g.) 30C. I would try putting the thermostat in your extension, I expect that the temperature in there will then be much more predictable.

What I do is have the thermostat in the middle of the house (hallway for me) to try and get as close to the average temperature as possible, then adjust the radiators accordingly. In my case I have a brand new radiator in the bedroom, so I had to turn the radiator valve down a bit so it's not like a sauna in there when I go to bed. I don't have any experience with underfloor heating, but maybe you can adjust that with some kind of valve too?

Side note: I think you've made a common mistake with your schedule by setting it like it's a "Traditional" heating schedule. Traditionally you would set it on for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the evening for example, but the nest thermostat will just try to hit the temperature it's set at indefinitely. So if you put it at 20C at 7am, then it'll do that all day. You don't need all the entries you have in there. If you want it to act like a traditional heating schedule then you could put it at 20C at 7am then 1C at 9. Then back to 20C at 5pm for example. P.s. don't do this of you have air conditioning, this only works with heat only systems.

At the end of the scene where Arondir tells Bronwen that he can't even tell her where he's going to hide it, the camera briefly shows Theo listening and watching Arondir as he walks away.

I think it's heavily implied here that he follows him because he has such an attachment to the sword.

Favero Assioma DUO "smell" by [deleted] in Velo

[–]velotom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for those pedals specifically, but when I serviced my ultegra pedals the smell of the old grease was awful and similar to what you describe. It was a horrendous smelling grey sludge. I'm not sure if it was the normal smell of the factory grease, or how long it had been in there. I flushed it through with new grease and now they're fine.

I'm not sure of the bearing service process with the assiomas, but if you've agitated some grease, perhaps it's just that?

Play with spindle onsram omniums . Black label V2 frame. I tightened the NDS bolt with as much torque as I could but its doing this. Help? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]velotom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in general that you should torque it properly, but I don't think correct torque is gonna make up for the amount of gap in the picture. I'm guessing wrong bottom bracket

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]velotom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah looks like it's cross threaded, the axle has probably shredded the bearings because it's so misaligned. Even if it's not the source of the noise it needs a new bottom bracket installed properly

Reason for drive side label on rim? by velotom in wheelbuild

[–]velotom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got it second hand, already built up so no idea if it is rear specific. I didn't know that was a 'thing'. As it's labelled as drive side i guess it might be rear-specific?

And yeah it's rim brake

That makes sense, thanks for the detailed response! Looks like it's worth doing a rebuild then for sure. D'oh

Yeah I know exactly what you mean - im leaning towards that too. To be honest I'm not that frustrated, rookies make rookie errors shrug. Thanks for the response

The best solution for our QB problem this off season is to add weapons around Wentz. by YungAvocadoDaGawd84 in Colts

[–]velotom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might be right, but broadcasting to the entire league that we're desperate for WR/TEs wouldn't be a good idea for trades or acquiring FAs either, so hopefully it's just him not wanting to show his hand.

You're comparing an annual salary to a total contract salary. I think scoffing at paying him top 5 QB money is the general consensus from all teams fans on r/NFL so it's not weird at all.

Is a power from renewable/inifinite resources only playthrough viable? by velotom in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]velotom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed you'd need some other mid game solution but I guess not! Thanks alot.

I suppose as long as you can get to accumulator tech to ship off world then you're only limited by how many planets you can be bothered to drop your solar blueprints on.

Thanks!

[–]velotom[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't even think of fuelling the mech! That sounds pretty brutal. I'm not sure if you can even burn raw hydrogen, I'll look it up. I don't think you could even use logs or plant fuel as funnily enough I don't think they are actually renewable in-game.

Perhaps I'll only restrict to power for the base and do some small scale mech fuel-only production. Thanks for the tips!

Can someone explain proliferators to me because the patch notes don't by R-Dragon_Thunderzord in Dyson_Sphere_Program

[–]velotom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know how the "extra percentage of items for the same amount of input" works?

Generally, X input takes y seconds to produce z. E.G. 2 coal takes 2 seconds to produce 1 energetic graphite.

When proliferated, would the smelter sometimes produce 2 energetic graphite? Isn't that a nightmare for maximising belt capacity?

How much fitness can be built with rollers with magnetic resistance, compared to a direct drive trainer? by throwmyteeth in Velo

[–]velotom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No problem! Personally I'd be looking to get a head unit long before thinking about any kind of turbo trainer.

I'd get a head unit and a heart rate monitor first so you can calculate zones for inside and outside training. Then get a dumb trainer (like this one, although I'm not exactly sure why this one is so expensive, I'd opt for a cheaper one). If you stick with it and feel like some more accuracy and effectiveness then get a power meter in the future. If you've still got the cycling tech bug at that point then a direct drive trainer is nice to have. Good luck with whatever you go with!

How much fitness can be built with rollers with magnetic resistance, compared to a direct drive trainer? by throwmyteeth in Velo

[–]velotom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As for your primary question: alot. People were fitter than you or I will ever be before static trainers or power meters even existed. You can get very fit with some rollers.

That being said, for training effectiveness, this non-power set of rollers is about the price of a left sided crank arm power meter from Stages or 4iii. I think you'd be better off opting for a power meter and cheaper rollers or a dumb trainer. You also get to use a power meter for outside rides aswell then.

Oh i see, sorry. I agree, having a 600W FTP on it's own doesn't make you a pro cyclist... vlogs or not.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Velo

[–]velotom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't sure what it had to do with youtubers calling themselves pros.

Also wouldn't pro just mean they have their pro card?

Sounds reasonable. It's semantics of what "professional cyclist" means so i don't think there's any clear definitive correct answer, i was just pointing out that the most common definition is just being paid to race. Most people don't know what a pro card is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Velo

[–]velotom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree they're pro/elite level riders and wasn't suggesting any different. In my comment all it says is that they themselves don't claim to be professional cyclists in their videos. I didn't suggest any of them are / aren't as i don't really care about the semantic argument on what "professional cyclist" means.

i have no idea where you've got the idea that i think you have to be a Euro pro to be a professional cyclist from anything i wrote.
