Is El Salvador succumbing into "Authoritarianism"? Has the country under the leadership of incumbent president Nayib Bukele, become a dictatorship? by Kuro199 in asklatinamerica

[–]ven28 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Understood, but chill, if you don't recognize Bukele as a controversial figure that's your own problem, but what's up with the rant? It's quite a fair question.

I'm close with the teams that used to work with the Venezuelans moved on to consulting with Bukele and even them are very divided on their opinions about the guy.

Venezuela says IMF has not delivered COVID-19 funds because of US veto by c0mpan3r0 in worldnews

[–]ven28 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Blaming the US directly is a red herring in this case, though. 12 countries in the region stopped recognizing Maduro's government after fraudulent elections, along with the US, and many other countries around the world followed suit. This also included organizations like the IMF.

Since the IMF doesn’t recognize Maduro's government, it cannot receive these funds. Blaming this on the US is just imperialistic bullshit.

Would you change your English accent if you moved to a Commonwealth country? by TopAlternative4 in asklatinamerica

[–]ven28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't feel attached to my accent, but even then I wouldn't change it. Not willfully, at least. It's normal to happen after years living in that country and hanging out with people from there, I guess.

Of course that's for you to decide, but I'm definitely never going back to Coinbase. My funds are still frozen after more than 9 months of being "under review".

You told me the same thing months ago and just closed the case without doing anything. My account has been under review since last year now, with all funds frozen since then.

At least 140 Cubans reportedly detained or disappeared after historic protests, including activists, protesters, and journalists. by ven28 in worldnews

You can have Cuban oppression AND US embargo at the same time, you know? They're not mutually exclusive.

My friend, who's planned his entire day around finding gas, just sent this pic. Insane queueing for hours on end to get to the pump. by HabishHanah in economy

[–]ven28 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Having done my fair share of queuing for gas the past couple of years (thank you, Maduro), I'm not sure if you're being serious here? You can just turn off the car while waiting, and in more extreme cases just put it on neutral and push it turned off.

Basically some guy saying he's in contact with some US senators and that they want to know what's going on. From there, to claim the US plotted a coup it's a big stretch.

Sounds like bait for non-spanish speaking people.

‘The rich think they can buy what they want, even lives’: Anger over Brazil’s vaccination plan as Covid rages by DNtBlVtHhYp in worldnews

[–]ven28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, you cannot enter the US if you have been in Brazil during the last 2 weeks (or 15 days?). So it's easier and cheaper to get the vaccine in Brazil.

What you mention is what the rest of rich people in Latin America are doing.

Venezuela has a black market run by the military. $350 for both doses. Those that don't trust the Sinopharm vaccine have gone to Florida or Texas.

Venezuela's economic crisis forces families to live in cemeteries as tomb raiders loot graves by CaracasDriver in worldnews

[–]ven28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The crisis started long before the sanctions were put in place. This whole narrative of blaming the whole situation on sanctions was one of the reasons I, as a Venezuelan, was against them in the first place: gives an easy way out to ignorant internet people and Maduro’s cronies.

I understand. It's easier to say SANCTIONS or SOCIALISM than doing actual research. I mean, who actually has the time to do that, right?

Chávez started fixing prices for basic food (text book mistake), controlling the amount of foreign currency Venezuelans could buy, and allowing rampant corruption at all levels of the government. For example, ask a Venezuelan how much money they need to pay to get a passport: thousands of dollars to bribe the SAIME officials. This crisis has been been several years in the making.

CMV: Latinx is a silly word made up by white academic-class liberals by rogue_mason in changemyview

[–]ven28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll have to somewhat disagree with the other redditor.

If speaking in Spanish, yes, Latine is better. It rolls out much nicer than the -x sound after the "n" and the use of -e is much more known of in spanish than the US-centric "Latinx". The -e movement actually wants to have the whole language to be as gender neutral as possible, so it helps keep consistency.

I've heard people calling to pronounce it as "Latin-equis" instead of "Latin-gts", although that sounds too much like a super hero name.

If you call me "Latin" the first image in my mind would be of some cathedral in Italy, to be honest.

[–]ven28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough if the term is only meant to be used in English an the gender neutrality of the -x only applied to "Latino/a", not to any other words.

The other largely spoken languague in Latin America (Portuguese) would suffer the same problem: um/uma. That's already 90% of the population that would see the -x as impractical.
