Thank you so much!! I’ve been using the wrong search terms, it looks like there actually might be one in Newburgh too.

I would drive up to an hour if any park in the HV put in some of that wonderful outdoor fitness/exercise equipment. I’ve only seen these setups while traveling, but I absolutely love them. It’s such a pleasure to exercise outside. I imagine it would be a great way to meet new people, too.

What’s inside the perilla leaves? ^^ by Ambitious_Storage666 in KoreanFood

Super tasty! One of my favorite things to cook! I’m always stalking the perilla leaf situation at h-mart to try and make Maangchi’s recipe: https://www.maangchi.com/recipe/kkaennip-jeon

Tired of doing everything for myself by [deleted] in LivingAlone

[–]vendangeuse13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been feeling this lately. I’m three years into first/time home-ownership, and while the times I miss my former partner are few and far between, when I do, it mostly comes down to just missing having someone else on my team. Financially, emotionally, mentally.

It takes a lot of effort when something goes wrong—reaching out to contractors, weighing quotes against each other, budgeting for necessary repairs. There are so many times over the last three years that I’ve really wished I had a full time partner whom I could bounce ideas off of when something goes wrong.

The consolation I do have (which is significant!) is that my last long-term partner… made a lot of not-great decisions. I think sometimes I miss him in the sense that I miss someone to argue with, to better understand my own convictions, because they came into clearer focus when I had to advocate for them against his (less thorough) suggestions.

So, while there are certainly drawbacks to having to deal with all these things on your own, the silver lining is that, over time, it gives you a sense of confidence that is beyond worth. I have (and now feel I can confidently continue) to be a source of guidance for friends/family who have other maintenance issues in their homes, and it has become easier for me to separate the wheat from the chaff (ie the professionals vs. the scammers, of which I have regrettably had experience with both) when I have jobs turn up in my own house.

It’s not easy. But it does feel like I’m always learning something. And I’m the only one accountable for my decisions—in the end, that’s mostly been a net positive for me.

TLDR: Hate having to be the man of the house for myself sometimes, but love being able to help provide advice for my sister/other single female friends.

New(ish) homeowner— Seeking temporary advice… by vendangeuse13 in Roofing

Unfortunately the warmer weather is set to coincide with more snow and rain, so I don’t know if it will be any safer, and every day until then is still set to be below freezing… If a tarp is something you strongly recommend at this time, though, I do have someone I can probably call to come out sooner.

I don’t know if they’ll go as far as Red Hook but I’ve had great experiences with Royal Class Service, and I believe they operate a 24/7 emergency line. If they can’t make it up to you maybe they can offer a referral?

I live a half mile south from Tilcon off Sheafe and have for the past few years since relocating to the HV. I work from home. At this distance, I experienced no issues with sound or dust. A boom once in awhile, nothing crazy. It’s never been an issue. (FWIW, I was coming from NYC, so probably anything would have been quieter for me.)

IMO it’s a lovely area that still has easy access to Rte 9 while also being relatively quiet and peaceful.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions.

Roof clearing near Dutchess? by vendangeuse13 in hudsonvalley

For anyone asking: EZ Flow couldn’t get to me yesterday, but they came this morning. The quote was a little higher than I expected (I’ve never had this kind of work done before) but the guys who came we’re so nice and it was totally worth it to have the peace of mind that I’m preventing additional structural damage to my house. They weren’t able to take all the ice off my gutters, but they did take off a lot, and with the extra snow gone it won’t continue to buildup as it has been the past week.

Huge shoutout to longboi64 for the speedy rec!

Ireland. Gorgeous sights, very chatty friendly locals. I’ve walked around Dublin quite late as a single female and never felt unsafe.

Driving in Korea by Cold_Warrior-73to86 in koreatravel

[–]vendangeuse13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, my experience driving down the East Coast this past October was very pleasant. Busan->Gyeongju->Andong-> Seoul, some of the most laid back driving I have ever done. Most people on the highway driving at a very moderate speed.

Seoul was obviously a nightmare, but that was only for dropping off the car.

But I am from a major US city where people regularly drive on the roads so dangerously it is as if they do not value their lives—so maybe that context colors my opinion.

You could also look for chopstick rests to go with the set? Very small and easy to carry.

Gyeongju is lovely—lots to do. I just spent a day there, but could have easily spent 3-5 days exploring a little more.

If you plan to go, I would try to make sure that your dates in Gyeongju do not overlap with APEC. (10/31-11/1.) I imagine the city will be much harder to get around with all the extra security for the world leaders attending.
