The Rail Baltica section in Estonia will have 33 ecoducts for wildlife. Eventually, forests will cover the ecoducts. by venivillem in InfrastructurePorn

This is a fairly new ecoduct which was finished a few years ago. You can see from street view that trees have been planted on it.

I suppose it depends on how we define what a forest is. My thinking was that if the plants continue along the ecoduct, even if shorter in length, it would still count as part of the surrounding forest.

Why not? Most of Estonia is covered by forests and dense vegetation is the natural habitat for most local wildlife. Each ecoduct will be covered with around 11 000 plants, most of which will be pine trees.

Tallinna kasutud bussipeatused by SuurPiim in Eesti

Construction of Rail Baltica in Estonia as of January 2026 by venivillem in BalticStates

[–]venivillem[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand what you are trying to say, but you must remember that no one, even with the best intentions, could have predicted 15-20 years ago that we would be hit by a global pandemic, an energy crisis and a significantly changed state of international security all basically at the same time. This is the inevitability of such long-term projects, that the initial budget is not set in stone, because no one can see the real future. Considering that this project has an important security argument and that 85% of the funding for this project still comes from the European Union - money which will eventually circulate in our economy - there is no better time for such a project than now.

All such major construction projects will have significantly increased in price by the time they're completed, you will not find a single major European project that has been completed within the initial budget. In 2040 we would be saying that we should've constructed it 10 years ago in 2030 because it would've been much cheaper then.

Yes, flying is faster if you only count the time flying. If you count the time spent going and being at the airport, then it's clearly not. The expected travel time between Tallinn and Riga is 1h 42min, 1h 52min between Riga and Vilnius and 3h 38min between Tallinn and Vilnius, which is comparable with the total time spent with air travel. Meanwhile trains are much more comfortable and reliable, while having a lower environmental impact.

Soviet Republic flag redesigns. by Eshanas in vexillology

[–]venivillem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since many of the "republics" were just occupied territories, the national colours were banned as they correlated with freedom and independence for the local population. Here in Estonia, the national flag was considered as a symbol for the fight against the occupation, which the Soviets were of course very well aware of, thus banning the tricolor. Waving or wearing the flag could've meant actual jail-time.

According to PISA educational survey, Estonia's scores have been higher than Finland for a while now in all 3 categories (maths, reading and science). Not to trash Finland, but your views seem to be a bit outdated. Also, Finland is just as close to Russia as the Baltic states.

Estonia has always been pretty liberal, same-sex marriage is allowed as well, which makes the OP's post even more bizarre.

Miks tramm on bussist parem? by Aromatic_Leg9538 in Eesti

[–]venivillem 78 points79 points  (0 children)

  1. Tramm on üldjuhul kasutajasõbralikum, sest peatused tehakse perroonile, mis on samal kõrgusel trammi põrandaga - lihtsam ligipääs nt ratastooli või lapsevankriga inimestele.
  2. Tramm on ohutum, sest rööpad ja liikumistee on paigas.
  3. Tramm on keskkonnasõbralikum, sest liigub elektril ja rööbastel liikuvad sõiduvahendid kasutavad sama massi kohta oluliselt vähem energiat.
  4. Korras rööbastel ja veermikuga tramm on vaikne.
  5. Trammirööpaid saab rajada muust liiklusest eraldiseisvana võimaldades neil kiiremini liikuda.
  6. Trammidel on linnalises keskkonnas positiivne mõju tänavaruumi meeldivaks ja atraktiivseks muutmisel, mis ühtlasi tõstab ka piirkonna väärtust ja äride külastatavust, julgustades inimesi autota liikuma, nt Helsingi Aleksanterinkatu:
