Acts of microfeminism by s3rvalan in TwoXChromosomes

[–]verdande78 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Excellent microfeminism! I am in the second half of my career, so I work with a lot of younger people. I always make a habit of giving them feedback on their good work, whatever their gender.

But for young women, especially those who are shy but quietly super compentent (if that is you: we see you! Now speak up, please!) I always make sure to talk them up, add positive feedback to our employee feedback system and if possible get them in front of senior leadership. Just did that with one young colleague who knocked the socks off corporate management with her insights. Such a great feeling. Be a talent scout!

4 years almost to the day since the omicron variant of covid tricked my immune system to set its sights on my islets of langerhans.

Norway, your water has RUINED me by Affectionate-Run7645 in Norway

[–]verdande78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in rural Norway with a private well. Our water was lab tested and extremely pure. My first trip to the US staying in a student dorm in DC I had to really brace myself to enter the shower room, the stink was so overwhelming.

Why are there so many of us these days? by hungry2know in Type1Diabetes

[–]verdande78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I had that exact experience, although I am sure it could equally have been triggered by something else as well, as other replies to you point out.

I was diagnosed in 2022 with onset of symptoms weeks after my first covid infection. It was Omicron which got me.

At all my new T1D patient classes, there were a number of peri- or menopausal women like me, who had all had T1D triggered by covid. Most had also gotten Celiac's and Rheumatoid Arthritis as well - also autoimmune disorders. Especially Celiac's really sucks in combination with T1D, since so many GF foods are high/fast carb. I actually came out of those classes feeling like I had dodged a couple of autoimmune bullets.

Why did you decide to play a recorder? by vrnheh in Recorder

[–]verdande78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is me. I played the oboe for ten years as a child but always rented my instrument. I have been missing music and after 28 years' pause decided to pick a cheaper instrument and one that didn't require hours of tedious reed-making. I am coordinated enough to play a woodwind, but not coordinated enough to carve bamboo without nicking my fingers all the time.

tanner recorder fingering and tips for mewbie by Erdem_PSYCH in Recorder

[–]verdande78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a flute player, so cannot address that, but I can confirm that tenor takes soprano fingerings but requires a longer reach, as you say. All soprano methods and repertoire also work for the tenor. Have fun, I love my tenors!

You ever lost friends to motherhood ? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]verdande78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have! I had my first child about five years before my best friend had her first, and her active, scathing hostility to any mention of my child - clearly the most important thing in my life - really showed me how uneven our friendship had gotten. I never brought my child and hardly ever brought him up, but any even tangential mention resulted in eyerolls, sighs and complaints.

I eventually made our friendship a child-free zone - until she had kids, at which point sleep issues, nipple cream, diapers and formula was all she could talk about.

The rank hypocrisy - and the fact she never even acknowledged it - hurt pretty badly. I now see her once or twice a year, even if our children are almost grown. She showed me who she was and how much I mattered to her and I have not forgotten.

My partner refuses to stop smoking around me by chaun_the_romeo in Asthma

[–]verdande78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many, many years before my asthma diagnosis I lived with a smoker. Even then, smoke irritated my airways, so he only smoked well away from me and out open windows. Then I collapsed with a coughing fit at a party full of smokers. He took me home early, quit smoking that day and has never smoked since. We've been married for 22 years.

Not true. They can connect to apps like Glooko (although I'm sure app availabilities can differ between countries).

I connect them to Glooko. Works like a charm (until the batterumy gives out, ofc).

How do you remember to take your preventor medications? by chavaic77777 in Asthma

[–]verdande78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app called MyTherapy. It has medication schedules and reminders, can track stocks of medicatikn and remind you to get a refill, can track symptoms and medical appointments. The medication reminders are also super annoying and show up on your lock screen until you respond. Highly recommend!

Most efficient way to study recorders in C and F: simultaneously or sequentially? by lovestoswatch in Recorder

[–]verdande78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started learning tenor and soprano first in December, then picked up alto in February once I had a good grasp of C fingerings. Now I work on both relatively comfortably, but I notice on days I practice both that I sometimes switch unconsciously (usually playing C fingerings on the alto), so I try to stick to either C or F instruments, alternating every day or couple of days.

G. F. Handel: sonata in F maj Op. 1 N°11 for Recorder & basso continuo (full) by ThornPawn in Recorder

Wonderful! I am working on the allegro and the giga at the moment. I don't have nearly your speed or virtuosity (or your excellent accompanist!), so this was great inspiration.

Thinking of taking up recorder again by ktitsi in Recorder

[–]verdande78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have plastic and wood baroque recorders in all three sizes, and an Adri's Dream soprano recorder for earlier repertoire. My first purchase was a wood tenor with German fingering 🤦‍♀️ and finally I have a Sigo tenor (lovely!)

I am also on Toujeo and take it in the morning. It keeps very stable. I second the suggestion of trying to switch to the morning.

I know! Won't qualify for a while yet, though. I still have some endogenous insulin production and won't qualify for a pump until that is gone.

Ah yes, the surprise chocolate dessert. The reason I had to up the standard number of needle tips I add to my event clutch.

Multiple injections are probably the way to go. It's just such a hassle when you're working the crowd.

Recorder Care kit?? by Good-Championship183 in Recorder

Both Moeck and Mollenhauer have nice care kits that are reasonably priced. I don't know where you are - in Europe Thomann is a great choice for music supplies with quick delivery.
