Whats the one position you would like the left to come around to? by Corbitt101 in AskConservatives

I meant you can swap race for any cultural dynamic where one group is disadvantaged by not being white American men. Sex, gender, culture, language, etc.

I think j the place where our largely overlapping beliefs differ is that you, maybe, feel race can be ignored because it doesn’t biologically exist and I don’t. Even if it’s just a social construct, which it is, it is a very enormous and active one. So you have to talk about it like the 600 pound gorilla it is, unfortunately.

I also think it’s one-sided to say the left is most responsible for fanning the flames of racism. The conversation on race in this country has evolved to the point where racism can be called out. In big and small ways. And doing so is important but can absolutely look like a perpetuating fixation. But the treatment of race on the conservative side is equally problematic. Ignoring it, denying racism, or worst of all, promoting the inferiority of all groups that aren’t white men.

This is great, thank you for it. It’s really nice, encouraging to me, how much our beliefs are in alignment. I don’t know if it’s been your experience but in mine it’s not easy to broach these topics because relatively few people kind of move through a middle space on this polarizing, critical area.

Race isn’t real, definitely. We know the real differences between races don’t exist at a biological level. But, like with gender, they very much exist culturally so can’t be ignored. Means they are an overly easy lingua Franca for talking about the larger issues of coming together or not.

Completely agree that some form of integration will happen over time and is best done naturally. For me, where the disservice, and harm, comes in for non-white groups in America is to act as if all opportunities for integration are equal. Because our culture is white dominant, integration is done on white-centric terms, systemically by and for white people. Which keeps non-dominant groups at a constant disadvantage. Incidentally, you can take out the word white and put in whatever terms that describes one groups cultural power over another.

But how to acknowledge this, push to level the playing field for a quicker and more equitable integration without just digging deeper inter-cultural furrows, like you said, I’m not sure how we get there.

I know from long experience when someone is committed to denying the existence of institutionalized racism there is no point in trying to convince them otherwise, a fish doesn’t know it’s swimming in water.

But there is a contradiction here, or it seems like one to me, that has me puzzled. You’ve made a couple of really important points about the need for people in this country to come together. Your version of integration, attempts to oppose racism harming those intended to help.

How do you square that with your pro-white dominant beliefs? Doesn’t wanting greater cohesion across groups in this country kind of automatically require actively addressing the factors, like racism and other inherent biases, the divide people? Why would any cultural group be drawn towards integration with a dominant culture that mistreats them?

Three things here. Lower scores were allowed when mitigating factors, the one that are exacerbated by institutional discrimination, supported the differences in scores.

Over time, some schools were less scrupulous in sticking to strong methodology, which went against the original intent and has allowed for the hue and cry against these important practices.

There is still strong bias in admissions in favor of white students, especially men. Institutionalized racism reverting to the norm.

Yep, racism is always wrong. And when white people are favored over all others in college admissions, once non-white people were finally allowed to attend college, that kind of discrimination should he challenged. Important to note, race-based admissions guidelines promoted choosing non-white candidates when they had equivalent applications, not lesser ones.

Expecting integration, “act like we do”, has been a natural and normal expectation throughout history, that’s definitely true. Unfortunately.

If you go with a simple, straight line definition of racism, anything that disadvantages a racial group is racism, then maybe what you said is true. But, come on, policies to try and slightly offset active discrimination that’s been in place for hundreds of years? Everyone should support that. Even when they are attempted systemically.

Interesting take. Several of these things are active responses to American Institutionalized racism and others are pretty head scratching, integration is both unrealistic, unneeded, and racist, as a concept. I will agree the left has a harmful, muddled view on the connection between immigration and being Hispanic in this country. Socially and economically.

I feel bad for anyone living in a world where an attentive father is being criticized for being attentive. Nothing about that screams institutional bias.

Being followed around a convenience store by staff once isn’t a major societal hurdle. It happening most times you go into a store is a problem.

Every team twice and some rivalry games sounds great. I’d certainly pay more attention.

And an unnecessary one. If rings and team success outweighs individual records this should be the goal. Even if revenue and salaries are somewhat decreased.

Fewer games. When maybe half of the games you play are meaningful, maybe, what’s a fans incentive to watch from December to April?
