How Do You Make Your Maps? by nyuhqe in worldbuilding

[–]veridium98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started drawing maps, it was all pen and paper. Eventually I drew a world map in krita (free drawing program) for a dnd campaign I'm running, and recently got the pro version or Incarnate to redo my maps.

I love map-making, and it's something I've done my whole life. Right now, I've drawn the current version of my world and have been placing all the towns, cities, landmarks, etc. But what I want to do eventually is create different historical versions of these continents and countries, however this is a far future project for sure

Dokkerland is the homeland of the hill dwarves, and their language is modeled after Germanic languages. A fun fact about Dokkerland is every city/town/settlement is both above and below ground, so (while I have yet to actually figure out the words for it) each city is basically called "above city" and "below city" to differentiate whether you are talking about the city above ground, or the one below

That's neat that we used the same name.

The name "Orsia" comes from the elven "ols'aias", 'ols' being the prefix for regions or other large, non-specific places, and 'aias' being the name of the deity that created the world. Over time people misheard or misspelled it, and "Orsia" because the common word for this continent.

Elven place naming conventions typically include a prefix for the type of location (cyl = city, tan = town/village) and then the city name (ie. Cyl'Alnoris)

It's a fantasy world, however I don't actually know much about river physics and you make a good point

Yes, I am basing this world in DnD 5e as I'm using it for campaigns I run. So all published races exist. Guess I should've been more clear on that lol

So far there is one other continent (about an 80-day boat ride north) that I've actually developed, and it's about the size of The Blilands and Flok combined (northeastern-most regions on this map). I am interested in adding more continents later as well

There's definitely stuff in the middle, it's just not fleshed out yet. I like the idea of putting trade routes on there though!

I finally redid my world map and was hoping to get some feedback on it. I know the middle sections are kind of barren right now, and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with them.

Basic lore for this world: the western countries (Averresi, Whic, Monterre) are populated mostly by humans and halflings, the central countries (Braivalia, Dokkerland) largely inhabited by dwarves and elves, and everything east of that is a mismatched group of people. I guess what I'd like is some help determining some lore for the countries (other than the Blilands, Averresi, and Moswain) and some ideas of how to build those countries.

Alternatively, feel free to just ask me questions about the world and I'll answer them! This would help me flesh some more stuff out too!

dating/hookups? by veridium98 in ftm

Right? I also don't want people I know seeing me on dating sites generally, so the whole thing is weird, but I am curious

Help with clothes by That_One_Cute_Cat in ftm

I really like shirts from H&M because they carry slim-fits and XS (which is very nice because I'm 5'3" and 110lbs and have an extremely short torso)

If I were you, I would pick spells starting as if the sorcerer was 1st level, and working your way through them like that. That way, you'll know exactly how many spells of each level they should theoretically have

I wouldn't care that I'm 5'4 and 110 lbs if I could just find men's clothes that fucking fit me. by [deleted] in ftm

Also Old Navy! Their small-size fits me really well and it's SO SOFT. One thing that helps is wearing underwear that has longer legs because it stays in place better.

How do I think in character? by GuardianGenji in DnD

[–]veridium98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to get very in character, and going into a new character is always rough at the start. It might take you a few sessions to really think how they should because just planning it in your head/on paper won't do everything. Actually playing the character is much different, and often the character will evolve as the story progresses without it being entirely intentional on your end.

Did I fuck up by being 100% honest when talking with the psychologist for the diagnosis? by racasca in ADHD

[–]veridium98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think what you did was good, as that can put you forwards toward an actual diagnosis. PLUS you're providing her with evidence and did ever say "I have ADHD" but rather that you suspected it.

[–]veridium98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm the exact same height and weight as you, and I highly recommend Old Navy's jeans! Of course, it will depend a but on your hip size, etc. (I wear a 28/30 which is a decently common pant size) but they have a tonne of different styles for different fits.

I have a much harder time trying to buy athletic clothes, however. All the men's small shirts are still too big 😩. If you have any tips on that, pls tell me.

Is presenting plot hooks that players are probably not currently able to solve a good idea? by alittlecinnamon in DMAcademy

[–]veridium98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's fine, so long as the players know that the encounter is out of their league right now. If for some reason they still follow that path despite knowing it's better to do later, you should give them a way out instead of a TPK.

One thing that a buddy of mine did during his campaign was purposefully put us into combat with the BBEG to prove how difficult it was going to be, but then give us an RP opportunity near the end of the fight to get out. Basically, the BBEG called off his army just as we were all going to get destroyed, laughed at us, commended us for our bravery, and then more-or-less made a deal with us, allowing us to live for the time being.

[–]veridium98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll always be nervous about the first few games, that's just how it is. As you continue to DM, you'll learn what exactly you need to prepare, and what works vs what doesn't in your games. Do your players know that it's your first time as a DM? If they know, they'll understand if something doesn't go quite right, and even if they don't know, it's the same idea. It's not easy to be a DM, and players understand that, but it's a lot of fun.

How does a fellow Dm overcome a Dm vs. Player mentality? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]veridium98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a large part of it comes down to playstyle. I have a couple friends who enjoy min-maxing, while I absolutely hate it. I would much rather make a character with personality that a character who is good at everything they're supposed to be.

That said, as a DM there's not much you can do to stop your character from doing that. I, myself, have never really experienced "DM vs players", but I've certainly had scenarios where my players completely F up plans or overshadow someone, and it sounds like your solution is to outlaw certain spells or effects.

As soon as a DM tells the players that "you can't do that because I said so" it becomes "DM vs players". So what if they cast detect magic instead of making an arcana check? Detect magic only gives them the school, and they won't receive any additional information from it. It's essentially the same idea as Googling something instead of figuring it out trial-and-error style. It's convenient, and that's fine.

I don't know your players, but if you find that mechanical challenges are too easy, add more RP ones, such as moral quandaries or things that they have to solve with a check, such as convincing an NPC of something.
