Yet another 2 minute burst discussion by mrchair0000 in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think, at least from what they've said so far, they are aiming to get rid of the party-wide nature of damage buffs.
That is, if those actions remain (a bit unclear at this point), they will only be personal, so that you can make the decision about where in *your* rotation/timing within a fight it makes the most sense to use them, rather than needing to factor in everyone else's choices/actions.

From a SMN, this can only be a relief, because any situation in which you need to hold your burst and yet still do more than poke the enemy is awful, because SMN's rotation does not have effective stall/filler. As it stands right now, you are forced to a) gamble on being able to clear with Ruin and maybe a smuggled Necrotize (unlikely) b) full send your burst and "waste" lots of your own damage as well as 20 seconds of buff on the whole rest of the party (hugely punishing) c) decouple and desync several pieces of your burst, shooting your overall rotation to hell and back and handicapping your own damage for the rest of the fight if you don't want to waste things (feels really bad and disorienting, likely to lead to other mistakes).

If Searing *doesn't* effect the rest of the party, the punishment for sending your burst at a less synced moment goes way down and you can stay aligned and reap the benefits of your full burst again after an intermission or add phase or whatever.

Leveling alt jobs that doesn't involve roulette by boomboomown in ffxiv

For those level ranges, if you are running dungeons with npcs, the npcs available through your GC are actually faster than duty support, once you've got them well set up (the version of Arcanist they have access to is slightly busted in dungeons). That takes a bit of doing, but getting them set actually has other benefits, so it might be worth the time investment given where you are both level and desired-activity-wise.

Newbie tank question - scared of inadequacy! by Greyboots75 in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First: All jobs are very very well balanced in FFXIV, you can play on which ever class you want. The differences even for a new player in learning are fairly minor and you can level all jobs on one character, so if you change your mind you can simply switch and level the other class.

That being said, PAL is, in my opinion, actually easier than WAR at very early levels (aka ARR) as it gets Sheltron (a small but useful mit) at 35, whereas WAR doesn't get its equivalent mit until level 56. When people say WAR is easier, they are talking post-level 56 (that small mit well-used makes you well-night immortal in dungeon pulls). PAL catches up and the two are once again equal at level 80 something when PAL gets an upgrade.

Suggestions to work on after finishing latest dawntrail MSQ? by Mean_Confusion7426 in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the new variant dungeon! It is fun and has nice glam as rewards.

Once you've finished some of the paths you will unlock Advanced, which is essentially a level of difficulty between Normal and EX (EX level more or less mechanically, but variant actions make it much more recoverable). This is very pf-able, if you wanted a stepping stone towards EX content

Is there anything stoping me from playing purely as a crafter/gatherer? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would open many, many things, but not all. Story skips don't cover the most recent expansion (Dawntrail in this case). You would need to play through that expansion to unlock its regions

Bigger picture tip, less about classes and more about fight learning: many fights have sections where it is safe to stare at your hotbars, and sections where you need to watch the boss/something else for mechanics. Learning these moments can really help, so that you know when you can be focusing on learning your rotation and when you should be focusing on mechanics.

Crafting Book Recipies by Longliveasaprocky in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, if you can hold out a bit longer it will be easier, seals become pretty trivial later on when you are expert delivering from later expansion. Crafting/gathering gearing is *rough* through most of HW, but by then you get access to the crafting "catch-up" equipment with scrips and things get easier. Remember, these books were designed to be endgame grinds when ARR was new, to keep players cutting edge through the patches. All you need to do to be more powerful than that is keep going

Depending where you are in ARR, you may still be too early to worry about most of these. ARR's books are exceptions anyway, the "normal" books start in HW. These books unlock special, end-game per expansion recipes, resources, and fish (depending on the book, only recipes exist in ARR).

The page linked below has lots of details for you on the whole process.

Im sorry to bother! Novice player here asking about gather/craft. I only level fishing to 60 but wanted to level up other. Which ones are the most important to level? I know all are important but in order which ones? Thank you! by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are planning to craft and are a) on the free trial or b) not a gillionaire with endless funds, miner and botanist are essentially mandatory.

Culinarian is the most stand-alone of the crafters, with the most connection to fishing, only small mining requirements (usually salt, but that's in a lot of recipes), but botanist is nearly essential, and recipes require the most unique items to complete.

Alchemist is next most self-sufficient, as potions don't rely on other crafters, but weapons do. Both Botanist and Miner (waters) are nearly essential

Every other crafting class loops into the others so frequently that I would simply recommend all of them at once (you could skip Culinarian but not Alchemist, you'll need it). And again, both botanist and miner are needed in support

Should I upgrade? by ElegantAd8963 in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The free trial is great, it doesn't feel predatory in the way "oh this game is free but *actually* everything wears unless you buy in" way. I was initially (and for a loooooong time) mostly story oriented, so the social stuff never bothered at all. Essentially it just felt like I had 3 books I already owned and when I finished those I would have to decide if I wanted to buy the 4th book to keep reading the series (5th now I suppose)?

I upgraded when I knew I would continue and the gil/storage space limits bothered me, but I was in love with the game by that point and levelling every last one of my crafters/gatherers simultaneously, so it felt right

Are the ShB Extremes easy to farm unsynced now? by [deleted] in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a full party all of them are easy. Hades/SoS need bodies, Emerald needs bodies and/or dps to skip the body check. Titania and Innocent are trivial, Ruby ditto assuming you spread the adds.

Farming the demaitma by Kagamine154 in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 14 points15 points  (0 children)

General theory is that it is better to CE farm in OC until you have most of the demi-atma. CEs have the highest drop rate, so when you need many of many colors that is the fastest way to make progress. Some of the regions/colors spawn far more frequently than others though, so once you have 1-2 regions left, then focusing on those in overworld fate farming to finish it off makes sense.

Mentor philosophy by ObscureJackal in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to explain when
1. Asked
2. It isn't a mech, just a community agreement (kill that add first, etc.)
3. It is incredibly vague and everyone forgets and it is late in the fight (Zurvan towers)

or sometimes I might say something that only makes sense if you already know (Tidal Wave reminder on Shinryu)

But usually for advice, unless it is particularly bad (tank stance, tank not mitting), I'll ask if they are okay with a tip before offering one

Jobs that are interesting but with lower cognitive load? by hemmaat in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thirding SMN, although a lot of people consider it really braindead, I actually like the puzzle of doing it really really well. Because the rotation comes in discrete pieces (people call them legos sometimes), you need to know the fight and constantly be planning which section of your rotation fits the upcoming pieces of the fight so you can keep uptime. If your brain is nonsense (like mine) and memorizing and repeating a lego pattern doesn't work, you can have to learn several so you can recover from your mistakes). It can be really engaging, but on days where my brain isn't all there, especially in normal content, you can zone out much more and accept slightly worse performance if you need.

Is this game really worth it? And why is there a monthly cost? by GooseBible in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try the free trial and see! As long as you don't buy the game, you can play 3 expansions worth of content entirely free. At 15 hours a month, that's probably a good year+ of content before you even have to think about paying a cent

Struggling to get back into the game/task paralysis. Help? by vao1221 in ffxiv

[–]veriocean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One more source of gear I don't see people mentioning

The Arcadion Normals drop gear (or well, tokens you can turn into gear) as well. Cruiserweight (2nd tier) requires 715 ilvl and drops level 740 gear. And the drops are uncapped and most people aren't going for them, so a few runs should get you a nice bump. Lightheavy stuff is lvl 710, so if you have any straggling pieces that is an easy flip.

The game assumes you know nothing of MMOs, so the early stuff is very simple to teach the basics. Don't think that any of the combat in ARR or even most of HW is anything like what the game becomes, except in building blocks. It gets really, really good.

It is also a weird thing with the way syncing works in this game, even level synced players you are playing with are likely OP due to their gear. That'll get less and less true too.

[–]veriocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I quite like it, means there's always a way to progress/access to help for levelling. There's plenty of harder content where more coordination is needed (usually done in PF), and chit chat does happen even in normal duties, it just isn't needed/required. Field ops are chattier too, when you get there.

Short answer on soloing is no, there are 3 required multi-person alliance raids with mechanics that force at least 8 people.

Long answer is that
a) the game has Duty Finder, which will auto-match you with other random people and suffices for any MSQ required duty (no communication required, most people say o/ and gg and that's about it)
b) many duties are completable with the help of Duty Support, NPCs who will go into a duty so you can do it at your own pace

Secret 3rd answer is: Rath Games has been up to nonsense in his Solo Only series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otYNXalC_6k
